Originally recorded on 01.31.2024, this talk features Chief Curator Dan L. Hess interviewing gallery artist and two-time A&H Artist in Action Gisela Romero.
When artist Gisela Romero emigrated from her native country of Venezuela, she chose to take a table runner with her as her remembrance of home. In her powerful solo gallery exhibition at A&H, titled "The Table Runner Stories of Gisela Romero," the visual symbolism of the table runner became the basis for the story of Romero’s experience, along with her meditations on the experiences of all who are compelled to leave their home countries. Romero, now an American citizen, constructed a compelling narrative through written texts, textiles, drawings, and installation. The exhibition examined the human drama of emigration by embodying the wide range of raw emotions that accompany individuals when they decide to leave their country of origin to start a new life.
