    Thanks for this. I have the same problem. Lack of confidence in my forehand and serve. I have a great one hand backhand (for the standards I play) and have fully confidence on it (I can wake up at 3am in the morning and hit it decently); the forehand and serve, oh boy..what a struggle to get it right. I know it's the body rotation and the way I use it...the video shows this to me more clearly

    This was so great to watch. I could tell immediately that there was too much arm dominance in the forehand. He seems very motivated to improve, looking forward to see how this ends

  • @XanEli1
    @XanEli1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I feel like part of the thinness of his forehand is also a timing issue, he's almost swinging too early and therefore the strings touch the ball closer to where the racket is taking a more vertical path. Also that's going to be a reason why the wrist unloads prior to hitting the ball just because the hit happens later in the course of the swing

    Very nice video and great observations and explanations on what you were seeing and what effect it had on the stroke. The thing I love about tennis is at all ability levels only a small of adjustment is needed to completely change the pace, shape, and spin of a stroke. The challenge is identifying the problem and coming up with the correction. This is where having a qualified personal instructor makes all the difference. Well done!

    wow! what a great series of videos. I am all ears and eyes. How long had Felipe been taking lessons in the past from you Nick? His level looks good. Very athletic guy with strong legs and good movement. So he played Futures in the past. How come that he is still having technical deficiencies on the forehand? My first impression was that he is an advanced rec player, then I saw his backhand and changed my mind🤔. Honestly, I am so confused .... That is probably the reason I keep editing my comment😮‍💨
    I am bettng this video will surely raise some fuss among us.

  • @georgetheyokel

    This video have two great takes for me. The "slap forehand" and not using the body fully in generating top spins. Great points!!! I believe 95% recreational players have more or less, here or there, at least from time to time, these two problems which are the culprits of balls flying out of control. Thank Nick so much for addressing this. Considering the widespread of the problems, may be they deserve another dedicated video? While all ATP players use their bodies fully in generating spins and power, personally I think Wawrinka's forehand body rotation is the simplest and easiest for rec players to study, especially those who have a natural tendency of hitting flatter forehand strokes at the maximum power.

  • @jfitness432

    He looked like he was swinging too hard, so when nick said you can’t go 100% I think it’s because he’s not swinging controlled and relaxed, tennis is about rhythm and timing and not muscling the ball. Tomaz talks about this and uses bands to help players feel hip rotation. The other thing I saw was that he was taking his left hand off the racquet early in the ball drop drill and that played a roll in his contact and control issue, he didn’t looks balanced on some of the shots he missed. I think the problem with this coaching model is nick is telling him “more body involvement and loading” it doesn’t work because he doesn’t know how it feels. You need to add constraints in order to get the athlete to use his body, use bands and medicine balls to teach rotational power of the shoulders and hips so he can feel what it means to use the body. I also feel Felipe was tired and some of the feeds weren’t conducive to good form

    • @user-js5ly2wx4l
      @user-js5ly2wx4l 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree and he's just doing more of the same, because he's not understanding the concepts he's been instructed on. He has one gear - basically just going for every shot which anyone can do and on a good day he might get 30% of those in. He needs to develop a forehand he can realistically use under pressure in a match situation and in clutch moments - but he first needs to get the concept and feeling of controlled aggression. Adding to the above comment, he should also focus on keeping his grip loose, and to load correctly. Loading is also all about timing which is crucial, and to get this right, he should use/emphasise the heel to toe method, which allows you to naturally sink down and spring up correctly towards the ball before contact as well as support use of his body more naturally from the momentum generated. He should also work on timing his unit turn prior to the shot (handcuffs on as a guide to use less arm) and swing slower initially (also the arm will be relaxed and whip like if unit turn is timed correctly), then accelerating towards contact (i.e., focusing on good direct clean contact) through the ball/wall and ending round the body (chin to bicep initially to get it right), whilst also keeping the head still (he jerks it up too much during the shot) throughout. In my opinion, as a qualified working coach, he has a lot to work on and I don't think he is at the level he has stated, not with his current service action shown anyway but brave of him to be on this video.

    Great real life video of a student! I am no coach but I think I got the same issues as Felipe FH. It’s a flow/rhythm and timing issue of the entire FH sequence. Perhaps a shorter more compact “backswing” on the hitting side of the body would help as it cues one to rotate the body into the ball first to generate power rather than a big backswing where it can cue one to slap into the ball.

    Hallo Nick 🙂
