He held a press conference after he was found out. That started a whole "I publicly apologize" excuse to remain in political power. He really believed that if he brought his deeply injured wife to the stage and she just stood there saying NOTHING he would get redemption granted by his voters. He used his wife as a prop in that effort. It failed. They divorced.
