      @Dania Ann From Lil Giant It was just a compliment. Since I also do not know anything about this stuff, it is always helpful that video host checked it out. There are a lot of good veterans out there doing a lot of good work. There are also some idiots trying to make a little money during pandemic. When you are ignorant, as I am, you tend to cling to those you feel are at least researching, or take the time to reassure you of their skills.
      Many would call the person who commented an idiot for prepping on the advice of someone who did not know what they were talking about. How are we supposed to know who knows what they are talking about? We do not know, ourselves. Explanations and step-by-step follow through are ALWAYS helpful. 😉

      @@henryvalero9235 He made it sound like most preppers know very little, when nothing could be further from the truth. Most have gained this knowledge outside of youtube from good scientific sources (many banned from platforms like this) and while I agree it's great to have this kind of video, it shows how little he learned that he fails to understand that many preppers know a great deal and have a good reasons for what they speak about, whether they happen to sell some possible solutions or not. Always best to do ones own due diligence and dismiss no one as that is what we call shooting the messenger to avoid addressing the message. 100% of everything mainstream right now. When was the last time there was a scientific debate on any globally promoted "issues" like the pandemic, jabs, climate change etc.? Never, and you never will as it's not science. I’m too old to worry about this stuff, but if it happens I have a bicycle, a horse, and a lot of canned food and water. And my dog for company. My kids are grown and smart enough to figure this stuff out for themselves. I am ambivalent about surviving an episode like this because so many assholes are just dying to run around threatening everybody with guns. I may have one but it’s for shooting birds, not people. I think a lot of people over eager to “defend” themselves would be better occupied by defending and protecting their family, friends, and neighbors with food, companionship, supplies, etc. Make the world a more loving, productive, and creative place than it is now.

    Very good video, very useful. That being said, I recommend not to rely too much on electric devices. Why? Because if an EMP occurs, it will come through every metal grid (electric, telephone, water piping) into your house with an incredible high voltage. All devices connected to the grid will instantly get fried. So your first worry would be to keep your fire extinguishers at hand. A cloth only protects against the radio pulse of an EMP but not against the massive electric current, that will fry your plugged in tv, your plugged in fridge, your airco, your solar panels and so on. And if you have a generator that survives, you will hardly have a device left to power. Therefore I purchased lots of candles, matches, fire extinguishers and many manually operated devices like hand driven drills, non electric thermometers, a chronograph watch and so on.

      @@scottoslund Hi, I suggest you read "Blackout Wars" by Dr. Peter Vincent Pry. He was a science advisor to Ronald Reagan and Chairman of the Congressional EMP Commission. In this book he warns that a nuclear bomb, detonated in the Ionosphere, could blow up the entire grid from horizon to horizon. If that would occur, the entire grid of a continent might be utterly destroyed and it would take months of not years to repair the grid. Such a continental blackout of months or even years would kill 90 percent of all people due to famine, droughts, diseases and chaos. Why? Without electricity, our entire society will collapse. See this book for details.
      I have the book in my posession but I haven't read it in the last two years so I do not remember all the details. Furthermore, I have seen numerous TH-cam videos that describe the effects of an EMP. However, I did not document which ones I have seen, so you have to do your own search. But I am sure, that just the key words "EMP" and Peter Fry will give you numerous hits.
      Finally there is a piece of own interpretation. It is my assessment, that we have a good chance that an EMP will ruin our electric devices and that this might cause short circuits and fires.

    Interesting video, love the testing and data. One point of contention here.... The mass majority will have vehicles broke down on every highway and every road, creating complete grid lock. Being one of the few with a working vehicle does not diminish the fact that blocked roadways will inhibit you from successfully 'Bugging Out'....atleast with your vehicle. Not to mention, you having the only working vehicle is like inviting a chicken to the lions cage.

      Lot to be said for having a pedal bike & maybe a small trailer. An old motorbike or one with the simplest non - electronic ignition is O.K. too. If you're near the water, then I've seen one guy built a sort of cross between a boat & a 3 wheeled bike to get to water, then float off.Of course roadside petrol pumps wouldn't work, so a sharp screwdriver to puncture the fuel tanks from abandoned cars & a container could be good.

      If you are really serious about surviving a massive EMP, you are not going to be living in a metropolitan area. Having working vehicles on your homestead (out of the cities) will be invaluable. Like everything else in the survival equation, all the parts must fit together. The great question to keep asking is "what is the next likely threat, we're not prepared for, and what can be done to lessen that threat?"

    Depending on the level and location of the EMP sometimes a simple ground will sufficient , however at high levels of RF. A grounding grid will be needed. Based on the water table, in a high sand level in the topsoil will not provide enough to get a 5ohm connect therefore a grid will be needed. Think of the RF as induction. The induction must pass over the car to the ground

    The several articles I've read on this subject of making an EMP shield for your car by using a metal shed or building say to make sure the vehicle is not touching the metal sides. So how can putting a conductive fabric directly on the vehicle be any good? Everything electronic on a car is grounded to the body. Also, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, but it seems like (if there's time) pulling the battery out of a vehicle would be a good idea. Not sure if a car battery would blow up or catch on fire in this EMP situation, but I would think it would be best to remove any power source from the vehicle (or any device) rather then just disconnecting it. Someone needs to do an EMP test on battery faraday cages. The government probably did that test years ago but they won't give that info to us disposables.

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The government did all kinds of EMP tests on vehicles using the Trestle. Plus, there's the EMP Commission's report. You can find it for free all over the web. As for the way a conductive cover works, it essentially creates a lossy barrier for incoming RF energy. It's not quite the same as a Faraday cage, but the net effect is similar.

    Thank you for the series of videos, here is what I have gathered
    1. The higher the latitude, the more susceptible to solar EMP (Severe Geomagentic Storms), like Canada, the risk is higher than the United States.
    2. Scientists have monitored the sun and can already estimate the area affected by EMP.
    3. Continuing from the above, it is estimated that in the affected areas, the power company will take the initiative to unplug the power before the arrival of EMP to reduce equipment damage.
    4. Stored in the basement or even the bunker has a certain protective effect on EMP.
    5. In addition to artificial HEMP unpredictable, natural EMP can be predicted and prepared in advance (unplug or cage)
    6. Therefore, additional precautions are mainly aimed at unpredictable and artificial HEMP attacks.
    7. Late-time (E3) HEMP cannot be protected with ferrite. Unplug or cage is the gold standard.
    (I wouldn't drive out to test if I had been warned of a solar EMP, I would unplug the battery.)
    If there is any misunderstanding, please let me know, thanks.

      I typically sweep from 100 kHZ to 1 GHz, since that would span the frequency content of an EMP. The power isn't really the issue, because I'm making a differential measurement of shielding effectiveness. That is, I make a measurement in free space without shielding, then I take another underneath the cloth, and make a second measurement. That's the standard method of determining shielding effectiveness. Shielding always varies with frequency, and in this case, it went between 20 dB and 35 db (90% - 98.5%).

    so putting a thin fabric with metal in it over a METAL CAR is supposed to add protection?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course, it does. If properly grounded, it acts, along with the car's chassis, as a Faraday cage. Even if not touching the ground, it acts as a conductive shield, providing both reflective and absorption loss. It sounds like you believe that covering metal items won't provide shielding. That's not at all the case. The difference is that the metal of the car (or other object) actually becomes part of the cage when it is properly covered. The proof is always in the pudding, as they say, so it's best to actually take RF measurements inside the car (which I did), and that allows you to determine just how much shielding is achieved.

      disasterprepper why not build a garage out of a couple shipping containers, line the inside with aluminum foil and line that with rubber or wood or something non conductive, then ground it? might be more expensive by quite a bit but just park it in there like a normal garage, and it's less likely to be overloaded and fail

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, it does. Adding a conductive barrier helps to reduce RF field levels. Also, the thickness is not particularly important for high-frequency waves due to something known as skin depth.

    • @michaelthomas3105

      Hi Stephen, just in case people aren't aware , the bottoms of shipping containers are not made of pressed steel sheet like their roofs,they are just wooden sheets fixed to lots of steel C beams. A shipping container would not form an ideal Faraday cage without modification. You'd need something like steel plates welded to the floor & copper strips fixed around the doors, but even then I do't think the protection would be that good.Better than no EMP protection though, & as you quite rightly say, some form of metallic inner lining would help.

      I get asked this a lot. Unfortunately, grounding a car wouldn't do much to protect it from an EMP. The EMP couples energy into the car's cabling and electrical interconnects. That in turn creates current that damages components. Attaching the car to the earth wouldn't help with that.

      Based on testing done at one vendor, free-standing solar panels weren't shown to be particularly susceptible to the radiated effects of an EMP. That said, it is just one vendor's data, so I can't say that unequivocally. Also, if the panels are connected to the charge control system, they would become more susceptible, as would be the charger. Folks might consider using broadband ferrites (see disasterpreparer.com/emp-ferrites) on the power lines to help reduce transients. If the panels aren't in use, I'd personally wrap them up in aluminum foil or EMP cloth (see disasterpreparer.com/emp-cloth).

    A couple of thoughts, as both a seamstress and someone who has bought and gone through many custom car covers for show and classic vehicles. You many have gone through these issues by now. Sewing the fabric with metal cloth likely dulls up needs fairly quick but denim needles likely work. The fabric likely works only as an indoor cover. Exterior covers have to be of very durable fabrics which still must be replaced every couple years, and cant go to the ground like that, or moisture builds. Wind would blow them off anyway. I think it would work only in a garage, and it might be easier to simply "faraday" the garage itself. Unless a stored vehicle, the chances of a car being in the garage with the EMP hits are what percentage? If an older vehicle, of course it doesn't matter - an EMP won't affect the vehicle, and a newer vehicle wouldn't be stored...

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sirena, I don't actually sew them myself. I take them to a local car upholstery shop for that. It's just too big of a job with these huge covers. As for using it outdoors, you're right, they're primarily meant for use in the garage. Some people do use them outdoors, but they put either a tarp or a conventional car cover over the top to minimize wear to this expensive fabric. Two things I politely disagree with you about, however, are the susceptibility of older cars and making your garage into a Faraday cage. There's no evidence that older cars wouldn't be affected by an EMP. While I do think they're less susceptible (it only makes sense), I wouldn't say that they're immune. As for making your garage into a Faraday cage, I think you'd find that tremendously difficult, if not impossible. The reason is that there are wires running into and out of the garage, which would bring in the high-frequency energy. That's not even considering how hard it would be to seal up movable garage doors properly. I suspect it would take many tens of thousands of dollars to do properly, and I say that as someone who has designed shielded rooms.

      Yes the cops have that device, so can military aircraft, to neutralize a vehicle. I would suggest you have spare electrical systems components for your chosen vehicle, bridging planks, winch, bolt cutters to cut locks or fencing on limited access highways, run flat tires. But yes any moving vehicle will be a target, the less surfaces on your vehicle exterior people could grab the better. You might want to think about armor plates, extra fuel tank, a water tank, etc. A lengthy bugout journey, like running a gas generator at night with visible lights, is asking for trouble. It has to be worth the risk or in a secured situation, I am thinking wind or waterpower and simple 12v system, quiet, low profile.

      disasterprepper thank you. The steel buildings are pretty common now. Any chance you have access to one where you could give pointers on improving to be more effective in shielding against EMP?

      Testing a metal building, along with testing a cargo container, is on my list of things to do for an advanced topics on EMP book that I'm planning. That book should address many of the questions that are still not fully answered. I hope to work on it later this year, but I have to finish up my Survivalist book first.

    My only concern would be to shield my generators so my unplugged freezers will work when the lights go out transfer food and run generators couple times a day. I keep mine in the garage to take advantage of the cold. No need to hurry to transfer in the winter

    Unless there is a "shunt/ground to earth" on the car , where ever the cloth touches the car will allow the RF to be transmitted into the electronics of the car. The composit makeup of the tires will allow some conductivity but will not be sufficient enough to shunt the Rf

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're thinking of field disturbances due to near-field induction, not far-field RF interference. We're not trying to shunt the energy from something like crosstalk, but instead, we're trying to absorb or reflect the incident wave. To show my point, try this experiment... get something that receives (say an AM radio) and hold a large piece of aluminum foil in front of it. What you'll find is that the reception will become worse. Why? There's no shunt path. It's because the incident RF wave is partially reflected and absorbed by the foil. Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts on this. Take care.

    If an aerial burst nuke was discharged..how far does the EMP travel, or how far from the blast would you need to be away from the approximate ground zero before you don't need any shielding? 20 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles or..?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A high-altitude EMP's effect could span nearly coast to coast. Natural terrain would provide some shielding, but it comes down to a line of sight problem. The higher you are, the greater the line of sight.

    I am in South Korea.
    North Korea has nuclear weapons.
    I think they will attack within a year or two.
    Tensions with China and the U.S. are also rising.
    The Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, is the same fate.
    If there's a war on one side, there's a war on the other.
    It's scary.
    Korea and Taiwan need EMP protection facilities

    Leaving your house after an emp or similar would be making yourself a target , bug out at home unless you have a diesel unimog , half track , etc. Fully self-contained with solar , water , winch and fuel and a destination, something that doesn't need a road ! Anything that isolates you is making you an easy target !

    Would you recomend using a stainless Steel cotton thread which will join the seams of each add'l sheet required to make better connective continuity across the entire fabric car cover?
    Also, I have a Pace Maker and wondered if your seamstress makes protective wearable clothing or a shroud that can cover me like a car cover to protect me from an E M P?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found that it didn't make any difference. I tried both metal thread and regular thread, and the shielding results were the same. If you make something to go over yourself, I would recommend a more skin friendly cloth like this one: disasterpreparer.com/product/emf-cloth/.

    For effective "Faraday" protection, covers MUST completely enclose the object being protected. Simply covering an object with conductive cloth is not enough to assure protection.

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there are two ways to look at covering. First, is that the ground is the fourth side of the Faraday cage. The earth is, after all, a reasonably good conductor. Or, and this is the way I think about it, is that the cloth is simply an RF reflector/absorber. Any conductive material put between an RF signal and a receptor will significantly reduce the signal due to these two mechanisms.

    • @x-man5056
      @x-man5056 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Cigar. EMP is NOT an RF signal. Faraday Gage is called a cage for a reason. Your reasoning MIGHT be true for an EMP caused by a mild to moderate CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) but not even close for a HEMP (High Electromagnetic Pulse) from a Nuclear weapon, high altitude detonation. You could put a portable generator inside a large wire dog kennel, ground it with braided wire to a rod in the ground (check for good electrical bond between all "6 sides" and ground) and drape your cover over it for added protection. Note that tires do NOT ground your vehicle to earth ground by merely sitting on the ground. Even if it is raining, not likely sufficient to protect against HEMP even with your cover over it. Most people are parked on concrete and certainly are not leaving their portable Genny's outside until use. Any item that has solid state devices in it and not already in a Faraday cage when HEMP hits will be rendered inop by the electromagnetic pulse.
      Carrington event of 1859 was said to have cause telegraph wire to burn through.

  • @VaderWhoop

    Please demonstrate the connectivity of these cloths.
    All you need is a dc power source, and multimeter.
    Add some wire and a bulb for completeness.
    What's the resistance reading per foot?
    Are you saying it's a flexible farraday cage?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll set up a simple experiment to show this. By connecting a DC power supply across the cloth and measuring the current, you can easily derive its resistivity (in ohms per square). While conductive, it is not as good as a high-quality Faraday cage that uses solid metal (or extremely fine mesh). The cloth built around a frame might give 30 dB of shielding (97% field reduction), whereas a good homemade Faraday cage out of tin foil might give 50 dB (99.7% field reduction).

    Silver facts: silver has the highest amount of conductivity of any element, both for heat and electricity. Too, silver, properly polished, reflects the most amount of light in the visible spectrum.

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No objections to using silver for shielding other than it tends to be expensive, and of course, it can tarnish.

    Greetings: I watched this great video almost 2 years ago and made a faraday cage out of a galvanized steel trash can, but I have a question: If I use a rubber bungee cord over the top from handle to handle to tightly secure the lid, will the rubber compromise the effectiveness of the faraday cage? Thank you for all your great videos...best wishes for a MUCH BETTER 2021!

    • @disasterprepper

      Hi Stephen, the bungee cord won't hurt anything. In fact, it probably helps because it helps to seal any gap that might exist between the lid and the can.

    Dr. Bradley, I'm intrigued by the room you are sitting in. 'Looks industrial strength. The door latch looks like it could close the vault at Fort Knox, and the wood inside the steel frames looks like it may contain metals? Or other scientifically needed material. This looks like it might be your EMP survival room...a modern fifties' atomic fallout shelter?

      It's actually an EMI shielding room. By working in there, I don't broadcast the signals all over the area -- something that the local air force base frowns on.

      Yes, you could do something like that to make it sit more securely on the floor. If you leave 12" of cloth all the way around, it seems to sit pretty well without any additional weight, but it could certainly be added.
