I'd love to see your Oxford World's Classics collection, I'm just starting to get more into those.

Having it published as a Penguin Classic was actually a contractual condition Morrissey worked into the terms...He has always been incredibly modest.

I read it purely for the humour of that fact, since I have a thing for penguin classics

Great video, I love this line. Writings from Ancient Egypt was a great read. Other favourites of mine are The Loss of the Ship Essex, Plutarch's Essays, and the Cynic Philosophers. Just this week I picked up The Pillow Book, and Henry Lawson Short Stories.

My tip with Dickens - and I'm doing a full read/re-read next year - is to start with Great Expectations or A Tale of Two Cities. They're shorter and you'll get an idea of his style without being overwhelmed. I do like the Penguin Classics. I tend to try and find Penguin Classics or Oxford World's Classics versions of books. I've got a lot of Penguin Classics so I won't bore you with the full list but I've got Greek and Roman books, including an old edition of Juvenal's Satires that I've had since I did A-Level Latin (and failed it miserably.) I've got the Bhagavad Gita, The Mahabarata and The Ramayana plus they do excellent Japanese/Chinese/Korean poetry/novels/stories, including an abridged version of Journey to the West called "Monkey". But I reckon I've got about 80 in total. Sorry for the long comment.

Wow, I really love this kind of videos! I Love books and this kind of videos helps me quite a lot to improve my English (I'm spanish).
I really love that black penguin Classics collection, in Spain we have the same collection, in fact I've got about 30 books.
I would like to have here vintage red classics, I know they are also by penguin, but in Spain that collection don't exit. Thank you so much for doing that kind of videos!! 😊😊

I’m currently reading The Mayor of Casterbridge in the Penguin black spine edition. They’re my favorite classics editions to read. I’m also reading George McDonald’s Phantastes, but on my kindle. It’s good to know there’s a black spine option.

If you are interested in a Charles Dickens recommendation, might I recommend "Bleak House"? It's a very lengthy novel so a reader will have to be in the mood for that but it really is a wonderful novel brimming with character and drama in every chapter.

That's a really good point about the type. As gorgeous as the Penguin clothbound classics designed by Coralie Bickford Smith are, I loathe the type and find them impossible to read.

I feel like the definition of whats a classic vs a modern classic is kind of unfair. Mostly black people and other poc weren’t allowed to even think about publishing their stories so we naturally have a lot of catching up to do. I’d 100% consider things like Invisible Man, Passing, Blacker the Berry, Beloved, these seminal pieces of African American literature the carved their own spaces to be classic classics. A lot of people love to argue over semantics (not you! But my consistent personal experience) over what black and other poc stories can or should be considered classics and I kind of appreciate that Penguin has been taking to publishing more and more 20th century lit from Black people and poc under their penguin classics brand since their modern classic brand is way less known and only available in the UK, whereas the black spines are available and known worldwide.
Great video! I really enjoyed watching!

I haven't read it, but there's Tale of Tales which is a collection of italian tales. It was made into a movie by Matteo Garrone - the style resembles Guillermo Del Toro's.

I have those 2 Ancient Egypt books. My sons are both autistic and the eldest is obsessed with Ancient Egypt. His reading level is still very low but his comprehension is extremely high- so I read to him an awful lot of books on Ancient Egypt. I haven’t read The book of the dead to him yet as I must agree with you that I find the typeset very off putting. I know I’m going to have to bite the bullet soon as my son does keep asking for it to be read to him. Wish me luck xx

I am super interested in Egyptian mythology but these penguin ones don’t seem like they’d necessarily hold my attention. I feel like Greek and Roman mythology gets a ton of good retellings, but would you happen to have any novels you might recommend for Egyptian retellings in the style of Circe, maybe?

Wha a bizarre question. I read them and in fact often study and write about them... Although there is nothing wrong with owning some books you haven't got round to yet but plan to so I hope you're not out here trying to shame people online.

Is flames of albiyon suitable for children around 13 years old?

    • @JeansThoughts
      @JeansThoughts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It sort of depends on what you deem suitable. It’s an adult book because the characters are adults and there is some mild sex in it but everything is consensual and respectful. I would have felt comfortable reading it as a teenager but I don’t want to mislead anyone to believe it’s aimed at a YA audience :).
