  • Had to re-split the Major as clutch not working. Turned out to be a heavy duty plate that requires spacers.

    All good thank you. I am having trouble with my diff I think. The left hand wheel slips under heavy load or doesn't drive when I brake heavy on the right hand wheel. You got any thoughts on it. Would be appreciated.
    Cheers Rob

      Have you tried adjusting the brakes ? The fidler brakes should stop the spinning wheel and make the other on go. I will have a vid on replacing the left hand brake cable and adjusting the brakes coming in a few weeks. If I get time.Take the lever off between the brake pedals and just brake the spinning wheel. Should pull the tractor in the direction of the breaking wheel. Later models had disk brakes.M

      Thanks for replying. Yes I understand this but the left hand wheel only drives under very light load and the right hand wheel is the only one that drives under heavy load it does not alternate between the two when the traction changes and of course this model (1952) doesn't have a diff lock. This happens even when not using the breaks for steering or traction. I've probably confused you now but what do you think. I've checked the crown wheel and the drive cogs etc nothing broken just a bit of usual wear.

      If I break hard on the right wheel the left wheel does nothing and it sounds like something is slipping the clutch is new so it's not that.
      Cheers Rob

      Mate thanks for the suggestions but it turned out to be the obvious what I should have checked but didn't think at the time,
      The outer rims were slipping on the inner counterweight hubs. Never been checked in 68 yrs probably anyway Cheers and thanks for your help
      and good luck with your old girl (Tractor)

    I have same problem. New clutch 11" is 3mm thicker. Where you get info spacers are 5mm? Trying to find what is right thicknes.
    I try 1,5mm thick washers and it's make big difference. If spacer is too thick clutch start to slip. Repair manual says "use 0,85 inch long bolts"(with spacers). Orginal bolt 25/32inch so there is 1,8mm difference.
    13" clutch have spacer thicknes in repair manual but that is different pressure plate.

      I used a bit of steel i had it just happened to work out to be the right thickness around 4mm if I remember right. lots of parts available from www.wengers.com/partsearch/parts/index/?p=1&wm_compatible_equipment_make=31020&wm_model=29610&wm_part_application=29037

      I looked at the video again it looks like 5mm plate I used. Seemed to work after adjusting the rod from clutch pedal.

      @@MarshallSmart I adjusted my fordson clutch today and spacer what i use was 2mm.
      I measuring distance disk and those three levers. old clutch 40mm, new 28mm and new with spacers 46mm
      Clutch pedal free play should be 1,5-2inch.

      @@Kake84 If that worked on your tractor that's good. If you re watch the vid it 4 or 5mm i used and worked fine after adjusting the rod from the clutch pedal.

    Thanks for the video! At 29:50 you test whether the tractor is moving while the clutch is pressed right? We replaced the clutch disc and trowout bearing of our 1959 Fordson Dexta. After this replacement our tractor still moves when we press the clutch and rotate the cranckshaft with a ratchet. Do you think we could solve this as well with pressure plate spacers?

    • @MarshallSmart

      It looks to be a more complex clutch on a Dexter if you don't have the manual go here ,
      th-cam.com/video/u5YkRfygrS8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MarshallSmart. 8.27min is the part on the clutch for Dexter.
      Is there an adjustable link from the foot clutch to thrust barring shaft? You may get some adjustment there if it's fitted. There were a few comments about the spacers on the Major clutch as to thickness. 5mm I used if I remember right. M

    • @stanjaspars374
      @stanjaspars374 ปีที่แล้ว

      In your manual a double clutch is used. The clutch link is already at the shortest setting… We have a single clutch, quite comparable to yours on the Major.

    • @MarshallSmart
      @MarshallSmart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stanjaspars374 If it's the same as the single clutch on my Major 4-5mm spacers may solve your problem, but they are only installed on Major for the heavy duty clutch. Might be worth adjusting the clutch peddle link first to see if that would work. I have not worked on a Dexter. Might be a vid on TH-cam by someone else who has trouble with this. M

    • @stanjaspars374
      @stanjaspars374 ปีที่แล้ว

      We added two washers per bolt (total 3.8 mm) this fixed problem. Clutch releases perfectly. No slip noticed when keeping the brakes on and rotating the cranckshaft with a very large wrench. :)

      @MarshallSmart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stanjaspars374 May be it's a heavy duty clutch like the single clutch Major. Good that you have fixed the problem. M 😀

    Mebbe too late, but I used a long bolt with insulating tape wound round to give the right diameters as a clutch alignment tool.

      There is a plastic one you can buy with splines also. My super thick copper pipe worked ok. M

    Can I ask why the spacers behind the pressure plate

    • @MarshallSmart
      @MarshallSmart  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The heavy duty 11" single clutch pressure plate came from the factory with spacers between it and the flywheel. The duel clutch Super Major used them basically shims where you could change the thickness for adjustment. As far as I am aware

      Spacers because tractor doesn t stop completely when clutch is activated, suppose.
