  • Say what you will about the Rainbow Machine, you have to admit this crazy magic bubblegum box has made a big impact on people’s pedalboards.
“It just does that THING that nothing else kinda does.”
    -Troy Van Leeuwen
Since entering our world at the end of the first decade of this century, the Rainbow Machine has turned more than a few heads with its bizarre and captivating trademark sounds. Just as many heads turn when people find out how useable and practical it actually is.
“It’s not a one trick pony. It’s the exact opposite of a one trick pony.”
    -Jeff France
Take a trip over the rainbow into the mind of the creator of this somewhat misunderstood musical contraption, as Jamie Stillman shares some historical anecdotes. He even invited some friends. If you have ever been confused or disgusted by this device, you are in good company. Hear what many musicians have to say about one of our most versatile, often vile, and shockingly beautiful sounding devices to date. You might even learn a new way to implement the Rainbow Machine into your effects arsenal.
“It’s just such a distinct sound but it’s cool that it has so many applications.”
    -Sadie Dupuis
    Video: Chris Tran
Additional footage provided by Vice Cooler and Dalton Blanco
Music: Lisa Bella Donna, Jeff France

Exactly! It seems more like a mini documentary on a pedal that shaped their company for forever.
EDIT: I totally vote for a series on the history on the pedals

My favorite part about the pedal is the story of the name. As a teacher and caring uncle, I love how children can so easily inspire us and push us to new ideas. The fact that Jamie's daughter helped that way is simply wholesome and puts a smile on my face!

With some pedals you have to forget they’re for the guitar to get the most out of them. Rainbow machine is one of those pedals. It won’t “sculpt your tone” to sound like SRV but it will give you the ability to create soundscapes that reach beyond what most players would consider guitar tone. I love it. It’s playful and unpretentious. You can paint with sound vs play guitar.

  • @chadperkins8406
    @chadperkins8406 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Personally, I use the Rainbow Machine on bass as a special effect at the end of some songs. If you dial it in just right, it creates a descending, repeating "explosion" sound, like the end of the world is about to happen, and everything is constantly exploding. It's fantastic for a doom metal band, even though you CAN tune it to make rainbows, you can make the opposite happen as well.

My favorite part of this vid is Rob Schnapf's beard. That's exactly how my grandpa styled his when he was younger. Also wore a similar hat and flannel. He's the guy who got me into not just playing guitar, but finding value in strange and often broken instruments. When I was a kid we'd go dumpster diving behind stores like Radio Shack and end up leaving with bags full of various electronic treasures. One of my first keyboards was attained that way. Also picked up a 12 string behind some mall near the U.S/ Mexican border. It's too bad I don't have any of that stuff any more, and I miss my grandfather very much. I honestly wasn't expecting to be reminded of my grandpa by watching this video. But hey, that's what happened when that beard popped in. The Rainbow Machine is the kind of device that my grandpa and I would find discarded somewhere. Not because it's trash, but because it wasn't understood. Someone didn't know what shelf to put it on. Good thing there are people out there like us who appreciate the magical things that aren't so easily categorized.

The wife purchased me one of these today. Can’t describe the tones I’m getting out of this thing but man is it cool. I dialed in one setting that sounds like 1950s sci-fi movies. Just the coolest pedal I’ve ever played. I’ll be purchasing more of these inspirational noise pedals soon. Using a looper is just mesmerizing with sound.

I bought this pedal a year ago after thinking about it for months. I just love weird pedals but I didn´t want to waste money in it because most reviews only played the outrageous sounds that the pedal contains. But I have to say that this pedal is now essential to me. Not just for the chorus but because its versatility and other cool little effects. The magic button if used correctly does some neat effects specially in V2. It is a very different pedal for sure but it has at least 2 or 3 great and usable sounds in it, the rest it is just plain fun. The perfect pedal to add on top of something else and wonder "what the hell is that?"

  • @pj_day

Love these EQD mini docs. Please keep em coming! Favorite part (other than Rob Schnapf’s beard) is Nick’s description of how to use it as a chorus. Great video! My favorite part is when Troy shows how special it is for his sound, even without the Magic button! 10/10 going on my wishlist!

Favorite part was seeing the guitarist from little tybee shred away! Also seeing the full color version of the pedal was cool. Love that this was more like a short doc instead of a long commercial. So dope

21:00 you guys use some BOSS gear. I spy with my perverted eye a Music Man amp brain in the back, somewhere..? And the tube Ampeg bass monsters, and guitars and basses which I can't even identify. How much would you charge to let me, like, sleep in a closet, or whatever kind of way I could like move there? Hahaha
