I was in the state finals in Michigan with Chris Taylor. I was the light weight. Chris at the other end. Both of us seated first. We both loss in the finals by a point. I was from Flint Hamady. Chris from Dowagia Michigan. RIP Cris.
I met Chris Taylor at the Nationals in Seattle in 1973. I was a 126 pounder, and he was a giant of a man! I'll never forget shaking his hand on the mat!! He was a true gentleman, and a great champion!!
Saw Iowa State wrestle against the Univ. of Washington Huskies when I was at the UW. It was one of the most exciting sporting events I ever witnessed. Gable was there as an assistant coach, if I recall correctly. When Chris Taylor came onto the mat - and we looked at our "heavyweight" entry - I think everyone started praying for that smol Dawg. "Please let him live. Please don't maim him!" Taylor didn't pin our guy and we won the meet by a whisker. It was amazing and a tight race throughout the meet. Hec Ed Pavillion erupted like we had won the Olympics at the end.
Thanks Dan. I was fortunate to live in Ames when Chris Taylor was part of the great teams there at ISU. I never missed a meet or match while I was there. Chris and his family live in the same complex as I was. He was amazing. Congratulation Chris Taylor for the induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
This was great! Taylor was an amazing athlete! I wrestled many guys well over a hundred pounds than me and they where awful. Sure the weight helped him, but he was just wresting like everyone else. As far the infamous throw, yes it was an awesome move done to a great wrestler. This story by Dan Gable lets people know what a great person and wrestler/athlete he was.
I met Taylor in Seattle in '73 also. Talked to him for a bit. Gable was at a wrestling camp I went to in "73. He was a "force of nature"! He had a cold and wasn't in a good mood!
I'm from Waterloo. I saw The U.S. Team wrestle the Russian Team at McElroy Auditorium 1972. Dan Gable's right here. The Russians were all in awe of Chris. Chris won his match of course. Gable barely won 3-2 with an escape with a few seconds left in the match. Respect and RIP Chris.
Imagine if BJJ was mainstream back then and Taylor started doing it after the Olympics! There would have literally been no hope for anyone! A 400+ pound Olympic Bronze Medalist wrestler with BJJ!
Wilfried actually was pinned by Chris, as the throw of Chris caused Wilfried to be unable to arch is neck, which is required in that throw or you get yourself touch pinned. The refs were out of position to see it. Then, Wilfried touch pinned Chris when ref saw it. Watch the video closely. You'll see. So, in reality, Taylor won that day.
I'm surprised myself. Actually I'm gobsmacked, and a little pissed off. No check that, I'm this 🤬😠🤬. Growing up a Wrestler I would carry a picture of him getting thrown, it was a inspiration type poster and I thought and still do think it's one of the best throws by a Heavy weight ever. It took nearly fifty years for him to be inducted. What the flying squirrels happened here. He should be inducted just for NCAA results. Somebody dropped the ball here, that's for sure, and if I was a member of his family I would be more than a little insulted. God bless CHRIS TAYLOR.
when gable got destroyed by larry it pretty much negated all wins in dans career. the domination was so overwhelming that he never wrestled in college again.
I believe Dan graduated that year. That was his last match. He did couch college wrestling for years and was undefeated after he graduated. I sure he won many tournaments after that loss including not getting scored on in the Olympics. He also got revenge on Larry Owning.
@@davidgreen1734 Yep, He beat him at least once after college but i think it was 2 mote times. Larry is a great wrestler and if it was not for Larry Dan might not have been as good after college...It set a fire in him...
Nice try Troll lol. He didn't get destroyed lol. He underestimated him. Larry wrestled an amazing match and was a gracious winner trying to shake Gable's hand after the match when Gable was reluctant and pissed. In no way did it negate all his wins pfffft. Nice try. I imagine Dan learned a tough lesson from Larry and took that to the Olympics. What was Larry's Olympic record?
@donald johnson The Soviets were the best. Wrestling was the most popular sport in the Soviet Union in terms of participation in those days. The US has had it's share of success in freestyle too though. We were never very competitive in Greco. Maybe that will change some day. Japan, Iran, Turkey, Europe, and others have turned out some very good wrestlers as well.

Love the passion Gable talks about Taylor with. Both legends.

did you work out with him on the mat at all
I met Chris at a wrestling camp I attended in my childhood. He was huge! But he was kind and helpful. RIP Chris.
I saw him as a kid, when he was wrestling professionally, in Minot, ND. He was really friendly to the fans.

Two of the all-time greatest in wrestling! 😎

go fuck yourself, loser.
One legend, maybe the greatest legend, talking about another legend, maybe the literally biggest legend.

Chris was my cousin....rip Chris
