    One of the realizations of the project pan is that it's enough when you try to pan something, even if takes years, the effort sets a mindset that it's not about finishing it's about using what we have and not buying more just to clutter.

      @tinywalnut6337 If you had it for ages, that was a good indicator that you didn't like it in the first place, good that you finally let it go.

    😭 this story is literally not at all related to the video, but the purple tulips made me cry some happy tears.
    When I was three I was playing outside of my Grandparent's house. My Grandma had this huge bed of red tulips but there was this itty bitty baby purple tulip just doing its own thing. Three year old me picks it, runs inside, and presents it to my Grandma like a cat gives its human a dead mouse. I said something apparently cute and childish about it reminding me of her, no one really remembers what. But from then on Grandma always grew me purple tulips and they were our favourite flower. Thanks for that happy reminder, its been a rough weekend/week and I needed it.

    Shawna, I just watched a dermatologist's video - might have been Dr. Dray but I think it was Sam Ellis - saying allergic reactions can develop over years. People think, "Oh, it can't be THAT product, I've been using it forever with no negative effects," but it can be an old favourite that suddenly turns on you. Considering the fact that it's your eyes that are reacting, and lash serums are a common culprit, my guess is it's the lash serum. Love watching you.

    Yup! After working for ulta and Sephora for any years I accumulated so much stuff. When moving over seas and not working I made a plan to work through my stock pile of stuff. ITS BEEN 3 YEARS!! And I still had so much stuff. I was only able to finish up my hair care stuff, and a big chunk of my skincare. Make up I just ended up giving to friends, donating to the local high school’s theater program, and STILL moving a ton back to the states. I have definitely become more critical of my purchases.

    I really love this thing of project pan ❤ I don't wear makeup but i used to purchase a LOT of art supplies and notebooks. I started to do a "stationery / art no buy and use your goddammit stuff first" challenge for myself in January 2023 and am still doing it. In these two years i emptied a lot of stuff, but i probably will have to do it for at least two or three years to finish my stash. I did finished a lot of pens though (and i was also so ashamed to have to throw away some that dried out before even having been used once, it's what triggered the no buy in the first time), as well as a good stash of gouaches ❤❤❤

    Using up what you have is awesome! Using expired products is not. It’s likely your irritation is from using expired eye products. Powders like eyeshadow last a really long time, but anything that isn’t a powder can absolutely be really irritating, and even cause pink eye.

    I did this last year and this year for makeup, lip balm, lotion, and body spray. I only had a target of using up 4 things this year because I had used up a bunch of odds and ends last year. I am proud to say I have used up 8 things this year! It may be 9 by the end, but I have been scraping out a lip smacker with a tiny spatula for months now, and I thought I would have finished it by now. Granted, I just use it in the morning when I put on my morning skin care since I am scraping it out (can't exactly carry it around with me), but every month I think it will finish it soon.

    Personally, I only finish products that I enjoy and find worth using. I'm very confident in my decision, because I'm conscious of my purchases and always do my research beforehand. So if despite my best efforts the product doesn't work for me, I'm happy to declutter it. I've already lost my money, I don't want to lose anything else - like feeling confident in my skin or the feeling of enjoying my products. I don't think I should suffer (ok that's a bit dramatic, let's say I don't want to feel inconvenienced) for something that's not my fault, like a formula that doesn't work for me.

    • @trianglejenn
      @trianglejenn 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      I have a similar philosophy, if I try something new and it doesn't work for me then I am okay getting rid of it. Like I just tried a new lip product that doesn't seem to work for me - I will probably try it 2-3 more times just to see if I like it but I'm pretty sure I will just get rid of it. Same with a nail polish color that I just tried but don't like on me - fortunately with this I can give it to my mom because she really liked the color when she saw it on me. I have other nail polish colors that I love on me so I would rather just use those colors instead.

Instead I got a seasonal body wash that would last longer and I wouldn’t ordinarily buy, and that’s been a really nice treat 🙂

    I collected B&BW products and eyeshadow palettes like crazy. I spent thousands on this stuff while not having much money... so it wasn't great financially either. When I finally realized that I NEVER finished a product and these items were either sitting on a shelf or in a drawer, and I usually forgot I even had it.... I finally decided I didn't need all of it. The amount of items I got rid of was crazy. I still have those products I kept, and haven't finished any of them (except for one body cream I could tell was going bad, and I had the choice of getting the new one on sale so I replaced it). I'm glad I don't spend as much anymore, but I'm still disappointed I wasted all that money.

    Also this is a second year when I keep track of all my book buying spending and this year I did way better than last year. Now I need to read 4 more books from the books I already own to finish my 2024 resolution. In my job we get "points" we can exchange for gift cards in culture/sport/travel related shops (as a social benefits) in a special platform, so I kept feeling justified to spend it all on books. Even when I have a big pile of unread ones.

    I don't wear a ton of makeup but I've accumulated some extra skin/hair/body care products so I'm trying to use those up so I can get back to just having my favorite products. Like extra hair oils, face scrubs, masks, etc. It's nice to try new things sometimes but it also stresses me out when I have too many options in my bathroom, I truly like just having my basic favorite products in there.
    I also have a huge amount of perfume samples that I never wear. So I want to start picking one, testing it out, if I hate it then get rid of it (maybe try to give them away but most of my friends aren't into perfume so I might just have to throw them out... they've been sitting in my room for literal years at this point I just need to use them or toss them) and if I like it then that becomes my perfume of the week/month/however long it takes to finish it. I have a couple of scents I really like and I would like to get to a point where I just have those perfumes.
    I also have a LOT of yarn since I knit and crochet, I've been on a yarn ban (in general just a craft supply ban) since the summer and it has actually been so nice to work on & finish projects I have already started, and to come up with ideas for how to use my old/scrap yarn. I just started a scarf for all the little scrap bits that aren't enough to make anything else. I think I will donate some of the full balls of yarn because I just genuinely have so much scrap yarn & half-used balls of yarn so if I get rid of the full skeins I will still have a lot of yarn to work through. And at least personally, I always love finding yarn or craft supplies at the thrift store, so hopefully that will help another crafter out :)
    In general I'm trying to get back into the mindset of using what I have before buying more. This is simpler, less stressful, and of course less wasteful.

    Doing project pan can be really stressful when I don’t go through products as fast as I would’ve liked. So I use a number of products at the same time. Then when a few of them are pretty close to the end I use only them. Then I go back to the original pile and the cycle continues. This way it’s easier to finish something as well as my other things don’t just sit and rot in cabinets.

Otherwise, I *love* the alternate use method. So many things get used up this way. I've got a lip balm that doesn't last for shit, but that makes it great for prepping lips while I do the rest of my makeup. Creams I don't love get slathered on my feet before bed. Crappy shampoo is now used on make-up brushes or becomes a stain remover for clothes. Don't like the way this conditioner leaves your hair? Now it's a pre-poo mask. It's just crucial to remember that 99% of product names are marketing tactics, not rules.

I've told myself once I use things up I'll allow myself to get whatever brand replacement I want. But just one item per category at a time. Use it up, then get more. So much more cost effective to buy one expensive one and use it up than buy lots of cheaper ones that expire too.

    You might already know this/have explored this - but I had a super similar experience with a vitamin c moisturiser and it turns out (from what I believe after trialling multiple products) my skin had developed a reaction to benzyl alcohol, which would make my skin horribly flakey hot and itchy - was just thinking if it's multiple products that ingredient could be worth looking into - apparently an allergy to it is fairly common!

    Not project pan, but I'm trying to read as many of the books I own that I havent read before the end of the year. I've managed 3 in November so hopefully I can knock over at least another 3 before the end of the year (and not buy any more books until I'm done with them all).

    Thinking about myself, how this makeup obsession started, and why. I know it began around the Covid shut down, and just kept going. What in us starts these things? What makes our brains change, and how do we retract it to do opposite? Like with any other obsessions, I want to stop this compulsiveness. Any advice would be great❤

    I have absolutely loved project pan... my cream brushes (the powder will last longer so using them after getting full use from my cream ones) and a few other products are in a small tub near my sink, and I have really enjoyed getting the full life out of my products. It also makes doing my makeup less stressful as the only thing I actually choose is my eyeshadow palette (my great love and I have lots of them) and between two blushes. I don't wear makeup every day at the moment as I'm not working, but I feel so satisfied with every product I am able to fully use up, especially products that I have had for a long time - I have a bunch of foundations that were decluttered to me and am mixing them to get a good finish and get through them.
    My consumable I am using up before Christmas is a jar of boiled lollies I got about 6 years ago (they are still fine, just not my favourite). If I have one every day I will use them up in about 3 weeks and they will finally be out of my pantry.

    I let go of a tub of hair conditioner that has been sitting in my bathroom for years because it doesn’t work with my hair. The money was wasted years ago, I don’t need to clutter my bathroom forever! And it’s way too old to pass on so it’s just hoarding rubbish at this point.

    If I don’t like it, I usually just give whatever it is away. If it is unsanitary to do so I just toss it. That being said, I don’t wear make up and only use two skin care products so I don’t have anything to go through anymore. I have two deodorants, so I’m using up the one I’m not so fond of first. It doesn’t cause me any issues, just doesn’t work as well as the new one so that’s my one thing I’m going through. I have a few hair care products I don’t like at all so I’m trying to find somebody to give those to.

      @@suides4810 it doesn’t sound to me like she’s wasting it, more like moving through things instead of letting them languish and expire, then moving through things she already has on hand. Working through what you already have really makes you mindful of what you have and not buying more than you need in the future.

    I'm struggling with ideas of how to use up my makeup. I have it from when I used to do shows on stage, but never wore it in everyday life. Now Im not doing shows anymore, im not sure what to do with it. I hate the idea of throwing it out and I wear makeup maybe once or twice a year, but by the time i hit the "pan" itd be years and years old.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I can understand the struggle. If you're looking for alternative, there are videos out there where people talk about how they repurpose their makeup or use it in alternative ways. One example I learned about recently was how people use powder eyeshadow as nail polish. I've personally transitioned some of my makeup into art supplies and I've swapped makeup with friends/family. You may not be able to repurpose everything but there's a chance you can repurpose some of it. Someone else mentioned donating their makeup to theatre in the comments as well, which could potentially be an option.

    Wow! I recently had a terrible reaction in my eyes and the culprit for me was the MERIT “clean” lash mascara. I was so disappointed because it’s pretty much new. My eyes puffer up, were peeling and itching, all the things. Just terrible. 😞 I will have to dispose of it and the cost was $26. Needless to say I will no longer buy from that brand.

    Not to give unasked for medical advice, but if you are having an allergic reaction, you may want to consider not using that product at all as you might continue to sensitize yourself to it, which can make the reaction worse over time. This is just something you might want to look in to and do some research on. If you've already considered this, then please ignore me!

    I don't really project pan but I do have a "focus box" of older makeup products I would like to get more use out of before they go bad. I have a Dior Backstage foundation there that's got to be five years old by now. 😂🫣 I just don't see -or smell- any changes in the product so I haven't thrown it away like any sensible person would do. There's only a little left so that would be perfect for my first ever project pan. I'll join you and finally finish it this month, wish me luck!
