Fiberglass Ladder Repairing UV Damaged Chalky Exposed Fibers

  • In this video, I am repairing a fiberglass ladder that has fiber bloom. Since I keep the ladder on the top of my work truck. Over time the sun has caused the fiberglass to start breaking down and become flaky. Therefore I am going to seal up the fiberglass to stop it from breaking down. The sealant being used is spar urethane This also keeps the fibers from getting on your clothing or making your skin itchy. Hopefully, this will provide me with more service life from this 8-foot ladder. I will do a follow-up video in 6 months showing how the sealant works

    What I do is just buy some fiberglass resin mix it up and use a old 3" paint brush put it on that will seal in the fibers just like they did at the factory. Just hose it off before let it dry that's what I do.

    As Rome wasn't built in a day, the spaying sealant task should be done in three times with several hours in between. Also, I agree with the Makita Man that, "The first thing you should have done sand the areas that you were spraying to knock down the fiberglass."

      I would give it a coat and then sand and apply the next coating(s). Sanding at the beginning raises more fibres.

    I've done something similar with fiberglass resin and a paint brush...it lasts for years but the brushed surface looks kinda crappy. Next time I might try to thin the resin and spray it with an air compressor or I might try purchasing some 2k clearcoat which not only has resin, it also has uv protection in the formula.

    Hopefully, she will last a while longer. I wonder if the extension ladder has a different coating than the 8 footer? The extension ladder seems to take longer to break down in the UV. Maybe due to manufacturers knowing the 8fter are mainly regulated to inside use and the extension is mainly out in the environment.

    • @billstools5244
      @billstools5244  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The extension ladders do the same thing. Most where I work are chalky. Mine was replaced 2 years ago and is starting to discolor. I might spray it to prevent the fiberglass bloom. On extensions we don’t notice as much since we extend with a rope and carry from the runs. An A frame ladder we carry holding the fiberglass.

    Don’t store your fiberglass ladders in the sun. They don’t weather as fast as wood but they will fail if they get weathered enough. An epoxy coating may extend the life and maintain structural integrity.

    Hacker you're cracking me up. The first thing you should have done sand the areas that you were spraying to knock down the fiberglass. And then when you're spraying go from top to bottom in a nice smooth motion not back and forth not up and down a hundred times. And when the spray tip gets clogged like that always turn the can upside down and spray it a couple of times till it gets on clogged. That's my tech tip of the week. Also you can purchase a new one at Home Depot for $79 I just bought a new one a year ago. Peace brother

    • @billstools5244
      @billstools5244  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pressure washer smoothed out any of the rough areas. I heavily coated the urethane. It’s nice and smooth. First time trying this. I hate when the tip gets clogged. Does it always unclog for you when upside down? I hate when the can is full and nothing comes out. I am considering though coating all my ladders even the ones that have no fading. This way I can prevent the uv damage. I know there not expensive yet just trying to take care of stuff

    • @FennecTECH

    My dad has a 32 ft extension ladder that’s like 15 to 20 years old that lives outside. I think he’s dumb for using it and am about to buy him a new one but before I spend $400 I’d like to ask y’all if he’s dumb for using that old shit or am I?

    • @billstools5244
      @billstools5244  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 32 foot extension ladder could be dangerous if he is extending it all the way. If not as long as the fiberglass isn’t cracking it should be ok. If the ladder ever falls it should be replaced
