The artists can use Square, its a card reader that accepts credit and debit (with a small fee). It works in Spain.

Yes, Square Up Spain offers services. However, you must be registered as a business in Spain, not outside. Square POS machines can charge foreign cards but it doesn’t permit charging outside of the original registration territory (it is written on their website). I think this is to avoid international money laundering. Also, most of people who sell their art are technically not permitted because they are on a tourist visa and don’t have business registrations to invoice. For example, currently I am a full time PhD student and not working as business. I can not bring my art in the streets and sell there.

These fairs are fun to go to but they are very expensive for the individual artist, especially if you are coming from another country. The cost of the stand 2,500 euro is only the start , there is usually an extra charge for lights and marketing at many fairs. The cost of transport, shipping, plus the cost of accommodation and food while you are there. I am not sure how the artists make any money. When there is so much art for the public to choose there is a possibility that you will sell nothing !

That’s why many of the artists at the fair are from Europe or LatAm (many LatAm artists visit Spain on a regular basis to visit family). It’s true that coming all the way from a faraway country doesn’t make sense financially speaking.

@@VeryPrivateGallery There are many hidden cost in doing any art fair. I thought the artists who brought their work unstretched were very smart except it made the fair feel like a supermarket. Buy your art by the meter and get it stretched.

@@syralarkin Haha I like the supermarket metaphor. I think the 'supermarket feel' came from the merchs (although each dress was unique, it was more designer dress than art). If they present it with intervention onsite, it would be more interesting. I remembered seeing a Chinese watercolor artist who made free drawings on a napkin at Photo Paris. It was very well received.

@@feichangyishu I would have been delighted too if the Chinese artist had done a drawing for me on a napkin for free . I am sure it was beautiful.
