"I shall destroy all the civilized planets!"
"I shall transform you into a caveman!"
"Live as long as you can with the panthers you tried to destroy!"
"There are too many people in the world - I'll destroy every large city!"
"You shall be destroyed by your own evil creation, demon!"

At least you started over a year ago! I started getting serious about GA about 6 months ago. Great taste! You grabbed some of the coolest 40’s book, that Headline 8 has exploded!!!

Wow, you just got into Golden age and have some bangers! I've been a comic fan and off/on collector for 35 years, and I just got into golden age over 2 years ago. Have some of the EC you have shown, including CSS #22. I love them. Wish I had bene exploring this before. It's like learning comics all over again.

I immediately gave a thumbs up once you started to talk about EC comics and their telling stories as morality tales, or at least pointing up some real-life problems and nudging to reader to take the higher rather than lower road in life! --Certainly the Shock Suspense and Crime books leaned in that direction (I think Shock Suspense Tales is my favorite in the EC line for that very reason). Brilliant art and scripting in those EC's! They all seem to have a MOOD all their own, a real mystique. Nice to see younger people still interested in this long-ago company's work!

cool video, I have small collection of golden age books, probably about a 100 books, some of my highlights and Detective comics #42 (ad for Batman #2 now on sale in it), I have a Captain America, a Sub Mariner, a Human Torch, All Winners #1 (vol 2), Batman #36, Kid Komics #7, All Flash #30, Spirit #1 (vol 2) and probably about 20 or so EC books too. A lot of the art in those old books are very POWER COMICS like. Speaking of POWER COMICS I want to help get the word out, there is a new comic coming from Floating World, I saw it in the the new Diamonds PREVIEW this month, there coming out with a Earthman/Torch one shot, not only will you be supporting POWER COMICS, but you'll be supporting your LCS by ordering through PREVIEWS.

I am recently getting into the Golden Age Comics myself (wish I jumped on years ago). Insane collection you amassed there. I'm looking to get similar books. (Precode horror, WW2)

@@PowerComics My understanding is that it should be a 3.5 at best then. But I’m not familiar with golden age grading and perhaps the quality of the book otherwise for that period offsets the tear. ?. Anyway, SCORE!

I realize power comics means different things to different people, but I always connected it to a really raw, unrefined art style, and pretty much all of the artists you mentioned in this video were not that, they were the upper echelon, at least by the 50's. Lurid subject matter? Sure, but what else would one expect in the era of the pulps? If we're going by art, I say early Fox comics are way up high on the power gauge.

    • @PowerComics
      @PowerComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s why I had the “we’re gonna do something a bit different today” disclaimer at the top. Golden Age comics aren’t Power Comics, but there is a spiritual connection, much more so than in any other Pre Power Age.

    • @peterlarsen6638

@@PowerComics True, I think I was taking things a bit too literally. The spiritual connection is definitely there.

As I was looking I realized something really wild... I actually have the one from this video! 😂 Did I buy it from you off eBay or someone you sold it too?
If you are on Instagram I will show you the comic.

I wouldn't say that the Seduction of the Innocent is baseless. All things in society cumulatively influence children. The resultant comic code had some good features but also bad features which prevented the ability to promote the greater good the code was supposed to preserve.
The superheroes weren't the problem, though, but the very genres that carried on as their hiatus began. It was horror, western, romance, etc., that most seduced the youth.

Bill Gaines would've been smarter to have pointed out all the morality tales--the human VALUES---that some of his comics provided, while, maybe, at the same time agreeing (to a degree) that "yes, maybe we should ease back on some of the gore, now that this is being brought to our attention so forcefully", etc, you know, to kind of meet the panel half-way. In other words, to try to work with them and agree to some of the charges and --I guess the word would be---NEGOTIATE with them. This might've helped find more of a middle ground that may very well have allowed EC and the other comics to entirely castrate the whole industry, in effect. But, if nothing else, Gaines really had a good argument in his back pocket re: the DECENT things many of his comics provided. A shame he didn't pull that argument out in his own defense.

Those committees weren't there to HELP comic publishers defend themselves, they were there to CRUCIFY them. They ask the questions and control the thrust of the investigation. I doubt that Gaines and company would have been allowed to present very much in terms of their moral stance. Those lawmakers were conducting a witchhunt while movies and other forms of media got a pass.

I enjoy golden age books from the stand point of “post modern propaganda”, very interesting to see the clear manifestation of these ideological themes and principles targeted to youth at the beginning. Sort of the like satirical comics of the French Revolution.
