If $3/hour works for them in their country, it works for them. You may be a beginner and they may be trying to prove themselves to you. Most people don't prefer to pay people less, and there should be a test period. Pay 'em 3/hour if they can eat off that. When your business grows, you can increase their pay. Most of these "slave labor" comments probably come from people who have never had to hire anyone for something and gotten burned. Pay someone what you CAN and when you grow they grow with you. I hired several va's from Upwork and their work was perfect. They are educated and experienced. However, you said not to use the "entry level" workers. All of mine were entry level and I was very happy. It doesn't mean they are inexperienced it just means they are new to Upwork. All of mine had loads of experience. And, because they want reviews, they will do work super cheap so they can move up the ladder on Upwork. Several of mine, after receiving 5 star reviews from me, doubled their hourly wage.
I live in the Philippines and have worked as a VA before. I currently own a Shopify store and I have to say $3 per hour is not enough for the day to day expenses here in the Philippines. Most of the V.A that accept this kind of pay is either beginners or desperate for work. You might have helped them by providing work, but I can guarantee you that it will not help them in the long run. We have a saying here in the Philippines "isang kahig, isang tuka" it means "living paycheck to paycheck".
You can't be serious! USD $3 per hour equates to 26,942.40PHP per month if you were to work a standard 40 hour week. There are not many people in Philippines earning that kind of money for clerical work. I'd say most wouldn't even be getting 20k per month before they got into a more senior role. I know many people that make do on less than 10k per month albeit with a less than desirable standard of living.
If you hired someone in Thailand for $3 an hour , now it would be 98 in tai , a meal cost around 60. So it's no different to them ,it is an honest wage for all your comments about slave wages. If you make 10 an hour in the USA and the average meal is about 8-10 $$$ I would say economically someone in Thailand doing va work is better off than working in the US... Do your research before you comment
Pay them 3$/hr and he'll only gain experience from you, 3 or 4 mos. and he'll start disappearing on you. He's gone to a good paying client. Filipino VA wants a monthly contract as much as possible, $500-800/month is fair enough but if your business is good and you don't wanna lose your reliable VA you should pay them $600-800. Please know that most of the excellent VA's came from BPO and call center companies and they are already earning $600 or more. If you're just looking to exploit VA's and want the task done for you, you better do it yourself and not think of getting any Filipino VA's. If you want your business to be successful you should pay your VA's well, I've never seen a successful business or client who exploits VA. You always get what you paid for.
Right. I'm an aspiring VA but I can't apply for VA jobs because they want only the "Experienced ones" so I MIGHT get this job for $3 just to gain experience and learn about the platform. I'll look at it as a free training with a bonus of $3/hr. But maybe if I'll be getting the whole amount meaning if the contract is outside Upwork. And I don't know if I'd last for more than 3 months with that rate. We Filipinoes learn really quickly and we get better over time. I may be new to the industry but I know my worth and I know what kind of service I can provide. It would be great if I'll find a client who'll take good care of me too.

I have about 50 employees currently employed by my company. I plan to reinvest heavily in the front end of my business before the end of December by training new and existing employees on our new systems, marketing, and expanding my company's product line. Most of my employees make well above the minimum wage in their area. However, If I'm interviewing an employee I potentially want to hire and if they offer me a rate that's higher than what I'm willing to pay I'll give them a few minutes to explain why I should pay them more. If they simply tell me because they are simply worth more I will pass on them but if they come to me and say "I figured out a way to increase your revenues by 30%, or decrease my expenses by 10%, or how to improve my company's customer service ratings" I'll be more than willing to pay them a hell of a lot more.
I have used VAs from India primarily because their English resonates good to British audience, some of them speak better English than me and pay $5-6 an hour.

I'm pretty soft in that sense and I do feel a connection with the worker during the project. I have had very good experience in general. The amount of talent out there is enormous. You mention that you only deal with experts - which demand higher fees. My strategy has been to hire new workers that have joined upwork. They tend to over deliver because they want to get good reviews. This strategy has worked very well for me, and I think it's good for the worker also. But i did not know about onlinejobs.ph - i will for sure give them a try.

Nice video but i have a question about Aliexpress and the VA. Especially with Shopify you can give them a role and they ONLY HAVE ACCESS to capture payments and the apps (oberlo). But when it comes to aliexpress what is the solution for here? I mean you cant give roles at aliexpress, so the VA can see bankinformation and if he want he can buy thinks with my bankinformation. Its not unfair. They get paid based on experience just like everywhere else. Educate yourself on the subject a little more before just becoming a random bleeding heart hater. The lower cost of living only means that, all things being equal, you'll be able to pay less for a VA in a third-world country than you would for the same VA in a developed country. Inside the third-world realm however, you can find VAs in the full range of knowledge and quality.

$3 is way too low and unfair!!! They work hard for your business but only pay that amount. This is very hurtful on their part you have no idea. I wonder if you yourself would ever work $3/hr? Maybe if you find yourself in the same situation as theirs. Living in a 3rd world country is hard enough and yet there are people like you taking advantage of their situation and way of living. I feel very bad about this.

Its not unfair. They get paid based on experience just like everywhere else. Educate yourself on the subject a little more before just becoming a random bleeding heart hater. They have access to more jobs that they otherwise would not in their country. If it was so blindly unfair, they simply would not accept the jobs.
Actually most professionals even with master degree in the developed and under developed countries have even much lower rate than that so $3 per hour can afford more than better life in these countries, much more than you can imagine having with that amount in your country
3 an hr is a third of the USA minimum wage.
mexico works for 1/10th of that.
