While in the studio for my band we did an A/B/C/D between this and 3 other amps (5150 included) and this actually blew the others away during the mix. Fantastic little amp!
I bought this one last year, mainly after knowing they've fixed the FX loop noise from V1. I like it a lot, and it's on pair with my EVH5150III 50, both great amps, with a monster high gain and crystal clear cleans.
I have a mark 1 50 watt. I love it. People like to say it’s vanilla, but that’s kind of the beauty of it. It’s so hard to get a bad sound out of it, once you start comparing it to other amps it becomes VERY clear. Me and my buddies made kemper profiles of the archon, a dual rectifier, a peavey JSX and a EVH 5150 iii 50 watt 6l6, the archon profiles SMOKED them. It wasn’t even close.
I have bought MT15 few months after the release in Europe and am till this day getting compliment towards the really good high gain and clean sound. Those PRS amps definitely have earned their space in the amp world.
Dude, no joke, Tremonti is the reason I got into playing guitar and I've been a huge fan of his guitar tone, both heavy and clean. He's my all time favorite guitarist. He's why I enjoy playing with a variety of different tunings.
I have the Archon 50 head sitting on a 2x12 dr.Z cab. It definitely has its own sound, very grindy and aggressive. I use the clean channel most though with drive pedals. It has a really nice, high headroom clean channel. The presence and depth knobs are extremely sensitive too.
I bought one in December and I liked it, it’s good for those AIC type tones, kind of Bogner mixed with Mesa, I just popped in some Tung Sol 7581A tubes in it biased it up to 30mv and holy crap, it changed everything about the amp it’s like it went on steroids. because of the external bias ports the rebias took 5 minutes. Amazing.
Own and love the Archon 50 MKII. Gigging and recording with it. Drive tone is awesome. Clean tone is awesome (and clean almost all the way to max). The effects loop however..... you said it's good, but I would say it's still a tricky beast. Did you try it with more than one pedal in the loop? I have a drive chain (in front) and a modulation chain (through the loop) and I struggled to get a handle on the added noise (with all switched off). Did a tonne of research, and contacted PRS and ended up having to swap out the loop tube for a 12AU7 (lower gain than 12AX7) and even still have to be very careful how the leads in and out of the loop are positioned. One pedal in the loop, no problem. More than a couple and any signal noise whatsoever is amplified. Seems to just be a thing with thr loop circuit design and is definitely not a deal-breaker (like I said, I love mine 😊) but it is a thing that's worth calling out.
PRS amps are good, but I'm usually seeing people run them in a stereo setup with a 5150 III or something like that. When comparing prices to other staple amps, PRS just doesn't cut the mustard
Huh, weird. The settings I'm use definitely look odd, but I found this actually pretty dang easy to dial in with my ears. Maybe it was the IR I'm using? Did you have a MK1 or MK2? Definitely agree with you on running it in a stereo setup, though! It's great paired with a 5150/6505-style amp, and IMO the Archon's rawness complements a super-tight modern amp like a Revv or Hughes & Kettner REALLY well!
Curious as to what staple amps your comparing it to? Pricewise new the only on that is close is the 80 watt 5150 Iconic, unless you bump up the price a few hundred dollars minimum. and what doesnt "cut the mustard"?, the 5150 are a tighter gain amp so it basically comes down to what your after, I played and seen played both and they are both capable amps depending on your needs. And IMO the PRS clean channel is better. If your talking the used market well that a totally different ballgame. It's OK to not like the amp or PRS but I don't think there is anything wrong with any of their products. I am by no means a "fan Boy" of any MFG, i used Fender, G&L, Jackson, Guild Gretsch & PRS guitars. As well as Fender, Orange, Vox, (Laney - ordered) and they all have a purpose and a fit.
I had this amp for a couple of weeks. The gain channel is amazing. But, the FX loop on mine was noisy. I had to contact PRS support and the dealer that I got mine from. I thought I had a defective unit. Their diagnosis was that the FX loop was working the same as any other unit they had. I don’t know if the old Archons were even noisier but basically mine produced a hum as soon as something was plugged into the return. That plus the loud jarring pop you get when you turn off the amp. Standby switch or not, that’s unacceptable for me. So sadly I had to send it back.
I love it when you can hear subtle influences in music. I can hear some LoG,Architects and Wage War up in there. Granted, the later two tend to tune much lower but it sounded great nonetheless. As for the amp,its nice but i just liked the MT15 more.
I dig my Archon head. Its a little finicky when dialing in a tone for a live band mix but its pretty versatile and so far reliable, only been 8 months though.
i still wish I went with this rather than the stealth iii 6l650, a year ago. that being said. the 5150 is paid off and this is the perfect time for this review for me! thanks
Not to be annoying but when is the Harley Benton signature coming? I have a single cut sized hole in my heart and I don’t want to give Gibson my money. Anyways, great content as always, Hunter! I played an Archon 50 combo a few weeks ago and loved it but didn’t have the budget. Also the demo track is amazing!
I love PRS amps! I own a MT15 head and a PRS Stealth Cabinet and it sounds amazing to me! I own 2 PRS SE guitars and they’re CE SE in Turquoise Satin finish and a Wine Red McCarty 594 Singlecut SE! I’m about to get a 3rd guitar and it’s an Epiphone SG P90 Classic in Inverness Green! I believe it’ll sound great through my PRS head and cabinet.
I use mine with a mud killer or a fortin grind like this I can switch from clean channel and to crunch channel with a boost. It’s plugged on a Hesu 2x12 with demon speakers Perfect combination.
Owned both simultaneously. The Mk 1 USA sounded better and also different (they do not sound the same though they are both ‘Archons’ at heart). This is for cleans and for gain. Build is absolutely stellar vs the MkII which is solid (MT15 style build quality which is fine). Run 6CA7 in the USA for crushing tones. I absolutely love my USA Archon. My Recto multiwatt does not sound the same and it’s a great amp. You could own the USA just as a clean amp as that channel is beautiful. One of the very best high gain amps going IMO (owned EVH, USA 6505 etc etc) and then factor the SH prices which aren’t high. The MkII is a solid amp for the money and great bang for the buck.
That flame maple front plate is too dope, too! So you're saying now I still need to try and pick up a MK1? 😀 How's the midrange on the MK1? I've heard mixed reviews if you're using it in a mix/band setting.
How do you get that stereo sound from using just a combo amp? I ask bc I got a helix which has stereo effects and I don’t know if I need to buy two cabs, or how to best utilize stereo effects 🤷🏼♂️
The problem with the lead channels are just how uncontrollable the volume is without using an attenuator. I could get get nice cleans at room vollume, but goodness you will dissrupt an entire neighborhood when cracking the lead volume anythings past 2 hairs. It's beautiful, but blistering.
i ordered an Archon 50 from Thomann a few month ago. Clean Channel sounded good. Gain Channel sounded good too, had no issues with the sound at all! Still pretty expensive for an asian made amp tho. Didn't really get the price point (1.100€ in Germany)... how? But what really disappointed me was the effects Loop. It was noisy AF! Noise got louder if I turned on a Pedal as well. Noise got louder even if I connected send and return with nothing but a single Roland patch cable. At one point I started waving around with the Cables in the effects loop and could hear the humming change, depending on where the cables were. I contacted the PRS support because I thought mine was broken. I even send them sound and video samples of the noisy Loop. They said its normal and there was nothing damaged with mine. In my opinion absolutely embarrass from PRS. To put out an unfinished product like this, definitely killed the Brand for me. To put this into perspective: I own a DSL20h and an Origin 20h. Two absolutely low budget (~430€ Germany) asian made Amps from Marshall and both have perfectly fine quiet Loops.
also did a loud bang noise when turned off. The Amp has no stand by switch. (the Origin 20 also has none, but doesn't make a sound when turned on/off). PRS support said it's not harmful to the amp or the speakers tho.
You can get around the loud bang when turning off by pulling out the input lead. But the effects loops is noisy no matter what. I also contacted PRS and on their advice, I swapped.out the 12AX7 powering the loop with a 12AU7. Reduced the noise a lot, but still there. Never had this issue with any other amp. Love everything else about it tho
I own a 5153 50 watt, and have tried an Archon. IMO the evh gain is better, but that’s subjective. More objective argument to Save the $200 and get the evh - more versatile, an extra channel, footswitchable effects loop - you get a lot for your $200
This makes for a really interesting conversation, in my experience. The only PRS amp that I've ever liked the sound of was/is the MT15 and MT100. I've played a few other PRS amps, and they just felt and sounded incredibly dull and flat to me. PRS guitars and amps, outside of the MT series, have always sounded horrible to me when I personally play them, but I enjoy them when others play them so maybe that's my curse in life lol
I used to really want one of these till I noticed that they sound very, very similar to My Boss katana MK ii 100 what he had running through my EVH cab
You do realize that the tone rom the amp is influenced by the speakers you play it through and the cabinet they are mounted in as well. (size and shape affect the sounds too. the brand abd model speaker is one of the most important part of the sound you get from any amp.. the entire signal shain gives the tone you hear in the end. I have a small Blackstar ID Core stereo 40 that sounds unreal for its diminutive size 40 watte through the twin 6.4 in stereo [speakers are very god sounding with all the availble built in effects gives great tone and volume from the tiny amp. I want to add a pair of 1/4 switched extension cab jacks in the speaker output circuit to drive a pair of 4X ? tower cabs i will build for that or I can plug a stereo headphone to 2 RCA cable from the headphone out of the amp into the CD input of my surround sound receiver for louder and fuller tone from the subwoofer and the rest of the surround speakers in the system.. sounds like a much larger rig. the 40 watt amp should have enough power to drive the twin tower cabs just fine and I will impedance match the cabs to the 4 ohms of the speakers or if I build small amp boards into the cabs with each it's own power supply. I can get even more power. much cheaper than buying a bigger amp and factory built speaker cab. from a big name brand. I did an extreme mod to a Starcaster Strat electric guitar By: Fender (said it on the head stock) with 3 quad rail/coil humbuckers wired Like a 50's Les Paul withy coil splits adding a 3rd control pot pair and retaining the Fender 5-way blade selector switch with the bridge tone pot also a P/P pot to activate the bridge and neck P/ups together regardless of any other controls. the tone caps are .o47 orange drops. the paint on the body and head stock is a space theme stas and planets motif done with spray cans and airbrushed detail finished with 2K semi gloss acrylic clear coat. over the lightly sprinkled silver micro glittr lightly sprayed with blue for effect and the custom hand made brushed stainless steel pick guard loaded with 3 quad rail/coil humbuckers and the 6 audio taper pots sporting chrone Tele style knobs and chrome switch tip on the 5-way and the kill button just for fun. The neck got a titanium nut and the head stock got roller string trees and locking tuners. the bridge got upgrded with a ful size solid brass trem block and roller saddles. It's strung with a 9-46 gage string set for nice clear highs and tight low end. The pick guard acts as shielding and the main ground through the pot cases and the output jack cup. the overall effect is a spacy look for this cool looking great feeling and playing guitar that sounds out of this world with a nearly unlimited variety of tones available plus all thost in the amp as well. Wanna Play???
They went from having old man paisley vibes to to being variations f existing amps. Weren’t really needed in the market unless you are a diehard PRS fan. They really don’t hold their values on the used market either. As a buyer, you can grab them for good prices used but bad for the original buyer and manufacturer
I sold my Archon after like a month. I could not get a useable rhythm tone out of to save my life. It felt inarticulate and the midrange was broad in a way that just didn't right in a mix for me. Props for managing to coax some sick sounds out of this thing, man.
the lead channel is a straight up 6505 copy. you have to run the presence and depth higher, but if you match those they sound identical. since you have a 6505 maybe give that a try.
FINALLY making this video....still can't figure out how to focus a camera, though, apparently 🙃

Prs archon 50 review 12 years in the making
Dropped at the best time where they come with a free PRS pedal, though! 😅
I know Hunter’s been drooling all week over that new Shell Pink Relic Baritone Surfcaster that Misha just got earlier.
Aren’t you, as well? I know I am. 🎉
It looks very familiar… could have sworn I’ve seen a certain similar Valiant before 😛
Probably my favorite demo track you’ve done yet.

Takes pedals really well, and not ridiculously heavy.

Great track man. loved the development of that opening riff and harmonies

I use the clean channel most though with drive pedals. It has a really nice, high headroom clean channel. The presence and depth knobs are extremely sensitive too.
I really dislike that PRS doesn't make schematics available for their amps
It’s PRS. They’re the Apple of guitar shit.

People love the high gain from these amps but I use mine as a pedal platform for a cover band. I’m very happy with my sound
What's hilarious about Mark Tremonti is that he uses a small piece of his signature amp live....mostly Synergy modules.
Not true he runs them together just like he always has with other amps. Last two tours he ran mt100 by itself and sounded huge.

You had me at Aerials.
Just scored a Archon 50 for $550.00. I'm beyond stoked!
So normally I'm pretty good with distinguishing differences in guitar tones side by side, but the archon and the mt100 sounded awfully similar...
Agreed, same for my ears.
HOLY SHIT that demo track was epic,
I use mine with a mud killer or a fortin grind like this I can switch from clean channel and to crunch channel with a boost.

Agufish can you tell me what is a main difference beetwen pts archon and prs mt 100 in high gain tone ?
Question: I’m at an age where I have to take my hearing seriously. How good does this sound with the gain pushed while the Master is low?

Does the archon 50 hum like crazy?
The Archon has a hum on the clean and dirty channel no matter what you do.
I love how he makes the eclipse look gigantic 😂😂😂
I’ve had two of those. The cleans sound great. Didnt get along with the lead Chanel. Might get another one a shot.
The problem with the lead channels are just how uncontrollable the volume is without using an attenuator.
I could get get nice cleans at room vollume, but goodness you will dissrupt an entire neighborhood when cracking the lead volume anythings past 2 hairs.

I sold my Archon after like a month. I could not get a useable rhythm tone out of to save my life. It felt inarticulate and the midrange was broad in a way that just didn't right in a mix for me. Props for managing to coax some sick sounds out of this thing, man.
lmao wtf the combo amp is $1300
the lead channel is a straight up 6505 copy. you have to run the presence and depth higher, but if you match those they sound identical. since you have a 6505 maybe give that a try.
Hated my Archon from minute one
What is this title though Mr. Guy
Day who knows of asking for a review of the Yamaha pacifica 611
Guitars yes, amps no! 🤢
We just want stuff made by wypipo! And that's not bad. Stay based!
You are a shill for big brands. Shame. You never review anything that is not big brand... just those that line your pockets. I'm out - unsub.
Who the hell wants to know about cheap ass gear....
I see mark tremonti in the thumbnail, I see my computer mouse, I click.
Same here lol
