Saw Alan in this show in Melbourne earlier this year. Was a deeply moving and humane engagement and he was totally captivating. I wonder if he would et any chairs to spin on a show like the voice, and yet his interpretation, imbued with knowing something of his life journey is compelling. I really admire him.
I doubt the chairs would turn. Those shows seem to favor big belting with lots of riffs. This was a beautiful dramatic performance. So much of this delivery relied on his eyes and body, which would be missed. (I agree with you, knowing something of his life makes this very compelling.)
@@Frantasticfranziska Billy Joel sang it about his doomed relationship with a girl half his age, and it's quiet and still and resigned; Alan's clearly also singing it with someone in mind and tearing his heart out with every line. They're both fantastic in very different, very human ways, and I think that in and of itself is beautiful.
I just LOVE Alan’s version of this song. This entire show is a gift!
Love this man of so many talents! xoxo
His performances are routinely exquisite and deeply moving.

so mercurial so talented
This is what a person from the theater can bring to songs. Early Midler, early streisand. Glynis Johns on the obc of a little night music.
Applause
Lovely rendition. Sounds like it should have been translated from Gaelic but is of course a Billy Joel.
I adore him BUT in my opinion he is overacting this song and missing the simplicity and stillness of the song.
I agree, Maggi. I much prefer Billy Joel's version of this lovely, sad song.
I like Alan's interpretation better. You can tell he's clearly singing this with someone in mind. I find Billy Joel's version too monotone.
