As a student of economics and a concerned citizen of Pakistan, I must express my reservations regarding the launch of BYD in our country. While I acknowledge the potential benefits of introducing advanced electric vehicles, I am worried that this move might further reinforce Pakistan’s position as a trading economy rather than a producing one.
The reliance on imported products, particularly high-cost items like BYD cars from China, poses several risks. The purchase of these vehicles will require a significant outflow of dollars, which could put additional pressure on our already fragile currency and lead to further depreciation of the Pakistani rupee.
Furthermore, the limited job creation associated with this venture, such as the employment of a few hundred individuals in BYD warehouses, does little to address the broader economic challenges we face. If, instead, we focused on developing local manufacturing capabilities for such technological products, it would not only stimulate economic growth but also create numerous jobs, provide a boost to local industries, and reduce our dependence on imports.
I believe that a stronger emphasis on building our own technological and industrial base is crucial for sustainable economic development. By fostering innovation and supporting local production, we can create a more resilient economy that benefits all Pakistanis.

Do you tbinks Japanese car assembling compnies in Pakistan should also start manufacturing inside Pakistan? Toyota, Honda and Suzuki made billions of dollars from Pakistan during last few decades and now its time to pay back. Let Japanese companies start manufacturing locally also.

We badly need electric vehicles in affordable range to reduce our fuel import bill. It will have long term impact on our economy as well as on environment. A very good initiative.
But instead if only assembling cars they need to manufacture cars locally.
This is the first step towards increasing innovation and technologies in pakistan u should appreciate that instead of criticizing...toyota has started manufacturing of cars locally and sooon but step by step BYD would also do that...

Electric vehicles are the need of time as it's the alternative of oil which we import and spend a huge amount of foreign exchange.
We have power plants, but the distribution systems is not sufficient to use this electricity. More over due to the corruption the agreement we are paying a huge amount on non utilisation of these power plants that's why electricity is expensive.
Petrol cars will be outdated in world and in Pakistan. Market is being captured by Electic vehicles all over the world and same will be in Pakistan. That's why the automobile industry is shifting toward EV. like Toyota, Honda and others.
This is all possible with the vast innovations from CHINA.
Hopefully Chinese cars will start production in Pakistan so that common people can afford brand new car. A brand new car has become luxury in our country that is how our economy has went down. I hope chinese cars will be of best quality just like Chinese smart phones and will capture market share of cars in Pakistan.
