Wait wait wait... Did you just say you prefer Disturbed's "original" version of this song? Their version is a cover, too. The original was done by Simon and Garfunkel.
This version is closer to Disturbeds version than Simon and Garfunkels. Maybe that's what he meant?
Too late to have any meaning in the conversation, but...I've seen a number of younger reactors who truly think that the Disturbed version is the "original" version of the song - they have no clue of who actually wrote it and how long ago that was.
You are master of the back handed compliment. They DO NOT over engineer their performance acapella groups don't. Usually the difference between the studio and live versions are purely perfect vs. imperfect acoustics. Ok and the Disturbed guy has a great voice Pentatonix have 5 coordinated and arranged so the complexity is outrageous. Oh yeah and 3 Grammys and the oldest member might be 30 years old give or take.

The first time he said it I ignored.. But then he said it again and i came straight to the comments to see if was the only one feeling offended on their behalf... Like, the way he said it, implied (intentionally or not) that they can't do this live.
Seeing that he said this I don’t even want to watch his reaction...it will piss me off.
You might be surprised at how little goes on "behind the scenes" with Pentatonix. They deliberately do as little as possible because they want their live performances to be as close as possible to the video and they are good enough to do that. I have listened to live performances of some of their videos and it is amazing what they can do.
this has to be one of my favorite kirstie solos ever. the most encapsulating of the same feeling as the original compared to the rest. also i love mitch’s chest register so much; it really shows off his beautiful/warm tone.
👏I know that you have been reacting to PTX for a while so it surprised me to hear you say that the engineers control the delays and other effects...PLEASE check out any PTX PERFORMANCE LIVE!!..(You did say you saw the Sing Off performances and it was ALL vocal ...The ONLY effects are "VOCALLY CREATED BY KEVIN aka Human Android)💯... There are a lot of them and you will see that they sound the same live as they do in the videos...😬👍As for how they filmed it ...IT WAS PERFECT FOR THE SONG and the emotion they wanted to display...
He should see the video of them singing daft punk raw on a room. No equipment and aparently was on a camara of a phone... AND THEY STILL SOUND AMAZING
Scott (the guy at the middle) has improved a lot since then i think.... Hitting those lows and highs.... They've improved a lot.... You're right Ovela, this really is JOY TO THE EARS.
I grew up listening to this when it first came out in the mid-60's. Simon and Garfunkel did a wonderful job and it has always been one of my favorite songs through the years. However, there is no comparison to this cover by Pentatonix, and the cover by Disturbed is a distant #3 for me because of the anger and rage I hear in his voice. I do not think that was ever the intent of the lyrics. In the 60's there were many songs such as this with warnings in them because of the anti-Vietnam war movement. Anyway, I digress, and I think Pentatonix rules on this cover song! Great job!

First point first. Three of the four soloists began in their deepest registers Scott, Kirsten and Mitch. They are the three in the middle. The bass, Matt, actually started up near the higher registers he does, and for the record, he can go deeper than that bass slide you heard there at the end of his solo. That last was point the second. Point the third has that they chose the filming location specifically for this song for a reason. Did you notice that light that kept popping in and out of view in the background? That light was integral to the song. I leave it as an exercise for the student as to why that would be the case. Point four, it is beatboxer, not beat keeper. And Kevin is the best at his craft in the world. Fifth point is as follows. Disturbed did a good rendition, but the song is about overcoming adversity, and their rendition took it to a dark place, too dark for the message of the song in my view. I like the following order. Pentatonix, then the original, then Disturbed. Just a few random thoughts for you to chew on.

I have seen the video by Disturbed and let me tell you, while it is good, it does not stay true to the original. Where as their video shows a sense of despair throughout the song, this was definitely not the meaning behind the original. In the original and also this one by Pentatonix, it starts out as being just that. However, there is a change within the song where there is a sense of hope. And their uplifting harmonies reflect that change. As someone who grew up listening to the original version, I much rather prefer this one.
You would enjoy the video better if you listened to it before you comment in future
