    I have a new friend who keeps telling me, she must never forget her culture....going by this, I don't think she really knows what "culture" means.

    what differentiates signs from symbols

    • @adamkazar8339

      Signs are universally understood. For example STOP sign. Meanwhile symbols are specific for a certain culture (note that the term culture is very hard to explain) for example you need to have at least some understanding of culture to know what the Cross or Ohm sign in Hindu means.

      i think Signs tell you to do something like Stop or Go, while Symbols represent something, not necessarily telling you to do something. Like how the Cross symbolizes Christianity

      @@adamkazar8339 I would say your definition is not quite correct, because if you watch the video, they in fact use the stop sign as an exampel of a symbol. The stop sign is not universal and no symbol is universal, and the reason no symbol is universal is because the meaning of a symbol must be learned. If you grow up not knowing what the stop sign is, you can't know what it means. So no symbol can innately be understood. When it comes to signs, it depends on what is meant by a "sign". "Sign" is often synonymous with "symbol", but has slightly different connotations associated with directions or instructions e.g. "follow the signs". So a sign is a symbol with a specified purpose of providing guidance or directions, thus limitating the range of interpretations and meanings ascribed to them as symbols.

      @@Kamishi845 well that is maybe just a matter of language, it is true, that sign language, and language for that matter, is universal for every culture. If I were to describe it, I would separate the two.

    • @Kamishi845
      @Kamishi845 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adamkazar8339 The existence of language is universal in every culture and it is intrinsically human to strive for the creation of signs and symbols to improve communication, but the meaning attached to those signs and symbols are not instrinsic in themselves. Sign language is still a language you must learn and even across different continents, there are local variations of sign language. When I was working with disabled youth, I learned a version of sign language called KAA which is a simplified sign language specifically used when working with the mentally disabled, because actual sign language is too complex for them to learn. But since KAA is based off the dominant language in my country, it means KAA also reflects the local variations found in that language in turn, which may not exist in any other part of the world. And so on.
      So I still don't understand what you mean when you state that signs are universal.

    Comparing Durkheim to Marx is like a beauty contest between Caitlyn Jenner and Hannibal Lecter.
