I feel that Alfred is one fo the most noble and heart warming characters in the DC universe. He was tasked with raising a young boy on his own. He is a father figure to Bruce and the heart and soul of the character.
Alfred is (in my opinion) just as important to the batman universe as robin and nightwing. But to find out that his original back story is pathetic was just sad
rebal180 I think I prefer him as a former military/soldier and actor before he became the Butler for the Waynes, it gives him interesting depth and backstory
I think he's too out there. Every other word is a curse word or a disapproving shout. I prefer the proper Alfred, but we shall see where they take this.
I'm pretty sure that it was and is Alfred who helped Bruce not become a vengeful psychopath drunk on power and weatlh. He became his moral foundation after his parents were killed and was always there with support as well as criticism, scolding him like a parent would.
Believable, in one of the prelude/tie-in comics for Injustice 2, Alfred with ingesting one of Superman's resiliency pills beats Superman to a bloody unconscious knob!
I've become a fan of Alfred not only because he's my favorite ally of Batman but also serves as a parental figure to Bruce Wayne when he's not fighting crime as Batman & always there to lend advice when Bruce is struggling through certain events
I always wanted an Alfred origins story since I was little. It sounds weird, but when i was a kid I was always curious about Alfred even as a 6 year old. As I got older the more I learned of Alfred the more enjoyed Batman. Believe it or not *the Butler is my favorite part.*
+Alfred Pennyworth: Sir, You can had out a choice assortment of bruises to the bad guys yourself and still remain a proper British Gentleman and you do it ever so politely! If I ever got into a ruddy fix and needed help in a fight, I would not mind having you at my back Sir. How are you with a sword?
I think they've actually fought once, and Alfred actually beat the living crap out of Supes. I'm not even kidding, I think it was from Injustice or something, look it up for yourself if you're interested.
in the Injustice storyline superman engineers these Super-pills that give the consumer God-like amount of strength so batman tries to steal one and scan it to replicate them, he succeeds but gets his back broken(again!) by superman then alfred comes along seeing batman on the floor as superman tortures him and takes the pill used for analyzing, and beats the crap out of Superman like no one ever has.
I just love Alfred. His character has nothing for people to hate on actually, I mean he's old, he's nice, he's loyal, he's wise, he's also a doctor, and he's a good father figure who ready to sacrifice everything for his little boy so yeah... It's hard to hate on Alfred.
Dudes you forgot to mention that Alfred was once a British commando in some war before becoming a butler, and he was a military surgeon and the only one in the Bat family to be allwed to use guns.
When you realize that Iron Man copied both the billionaire, butler and no powers part from Batman, and they even named his butler after the father of Alfred.
In my head canon, Batman universe was set in the early 90's, and Alfred was SAS during the end of WW2 and up to the mid 50's as a medic, then MI6 until up to early 60's, until he was employed by Wanye Enterprises to be a corporate intel officer for a short time until he retired as a butler right at Bruces birth. It was Alfred who ended up grooming Bruce to have his moral compass and investigative prowess.
I'm a huge fan of the two most recent iterations of Alfred (Michael Caine's Alfred from the Nolan trilogy, and Sean Pertwee's Alfred from the show "Gotham".) I love Michael Caine's emotional, gut-wrenching dialogue and how he truly feels like a second father to Bruce and Sean Pertwee's Alfred feels more fleshed out. He's not just some soft-spoken butler, he's a hardened war veteran, he's edgy and cynical, and he can fend for himself and protect Bruce if need be.
I love Alfred in Batman TAS* (The Animated Series) the most. It's just something about his slight cockyness along with being very friendly all around that makes him the best Alfred in my opinion.
You left out a great piece of his past; that he was once an MI6 intelligence officer. It has been part of the canon for at least 20 years. It has been ewstablished in the animated series, comic books, and the latest movie trilogy.
For me, Alfred was the most amazing butler because he knew when to keep a secret, when shit was going down and when to save Batman's ass. He literally was the best at being there for Bruce, when his parents were gone, when the ones he loved died or when he really needed help. Bruce became Batman because of a Bat but it was Alfred that made him Bruce. Also to me, out of all the Alfred's played, Michael Gough was the best Alfred. He was like the Mr. Rogers of that universe.
An absolute essential part of the universe! A DC without Alfred is just a world that is found to be lacking - and quite simply a Batman without an Alfred would have been long dead.
I'm sure, if most of you have not drawn that line yet, that Jarvis Pennyworth, MIGHT be the inspiration for Tony Stark to refer to his AI butler as"Jarvis". Thing is Jarvis is a incredibly generic name for a butler, and with Jeeves. For Tony it is an acronym "Just A Rather Very Intelligent System". But this is a recent invention, even though Tony had referred to Jarvis many times long before then.
In the series Agent Carter that nearly came out, It have a REAL Jarvis working for Tony Stark dad which I guess he won't make it in some point of the series and then change into AI
SOS Sama Maybe Tony named the ai Jarvis in honor of his dad's butler. If he thinks hard enough I'm sure a genius like Tony could come up with an acronym to fit with the Jarvis name.
Best origins video you guys have done yet I knew nothing about the pre-crisis version of his past I thought I knew everything about Alfred learned a whole lot keep up the great work
Thank you for this account of the full comic-book versions of Alfred. I first read the first origin story in a Batman Giant in 1969, but I have known about Alfred since 1962 when I read an old 1960 Batman comic book-the first of many to come.
What an amazing character , I liked Alfred since I was a kid, I've always liked how loyal he is and how much he loves and care for Bruce like if he was his own son.
I think my favorite version of Alfred is the one in “Batman & Robin” in 1997. It is here that we see that Alfred is the one that raised young Bruce after his Mum and Father were murdered and that rather then having a “Master and Servant” relationship, it is a “Father and Son” relationship that the two men enjoy. OH yes. Alfred is a Butler and he makes no bones about that when others are around. But between the two of them, they know that it goes far beyond that and that is what I love so much about that movie.
HOLY shit.. I didn't know Alfred's father was named Jarvis... That really doesn't make Tony Stark aka Iron-Man look like less of a Batman rip off either.. his helper robot is named Jarvis.. lol

He served Iron Man's parents, Howard and Maria, until they died and stayed on to maintain the family mansion. When Tony Stark turned the family mansion into Avengers HQ, Edwin Jarvis became the butler to the Avengers.

In a idealized / fictionalized comic book world where there are an increasing amount of young beautiful people to pick from, it's always the older characters like Alfred Pennyworth or Julia Kapatelis and Ma and Pa Kent who make the superheroes they had a hand in raised so human and interesting. There's something to be said for age, experience, and quiet, watchful dignity.
Greatest butler of all. even in convergence where he met an alternate earth Grayson he was hardly surprised and offered him a cup of earl tea, graysons favorite.
I feel like they are slowly starting to run out of things. I wonder when we will get to origins of that one guy batman punched in the face that one time
I always thought Alfred was born old but the one i like the most is the Arkham series version, he's witty and classy and shows his love for Bruce like a true father
Alfred might be the only person that you can say things like : "he is better than Batman", "he can beat Batman", etc etc etc without creating a fanwar.

Ba dum tss!
Alfred is like a second dad to the bat 🦇 family! And Alfred means in English is “wise counselor”
They kinda forgot to mention that Alfred wasa military man in some versions ;;
I love alfred, so much
I feel like they are slowly starting to run out of things. I wonder when we will get to origins of that one guy batman punched in the face that one time
Franklin?
Dave?
You saying Alfred isn't important to Batman?
No it's more like You the viewer are running out of ideas. they got polls for these kinds of things and the viewers decides what next.
Yeah right like someone could punch batman in the face
I always thought Alfred was born old but the one i like the most is the Arkham series version, he's witty and classy and shows his love for Bruce like a true father
