    I think Sunshine was better. The camera was a significant improvement, and while the physics we're awkward, combined with Mario's amazing controls, you could pull off tricks like never before. The worlds felt more natural and alive too, and Fludd let you do even more amazing things.

  • @danboom101

    Also, Mario 64 had the more diverse level design. Sunshine had the BETTER level design. Sunshine has the better controls which allowed them to really go all out with the platforming designs. Imagine Pina Park with 64 slippery controls... Damned near impossible.
    While sunshine was stuck with just tropical stages, it's what the game is based on, and honestly that's not a point against it. Not every Mario game has to have a million different kinds of levels. The tropical ones actually are more cohesive!

      Laddie Porter yeah, but nostalgia goggles r just annoying! They keep saying “OlDeR gAmEs R bEtTeR bC oF nOsTaLgA!” They don’t even talk about how it’s better then the other thing and only focus on nostalgia, in my opinion nostalgia is the LEAST important thing in gaming, but it’s ok if ppl disagree with me bc it’s just opinion and everyone has opinions and the only opinions that r wrong r ones that like ppl like illegal stuff or liking stuff that r 2 insulting, everyone can have their own opinions and don’t say opinions r wrong, NO THEY R NOT! Focus on other stuff like gameplay, story, controls, graphics and music, some of those aren’t even that important but still more important then nostalgia in my opinion. Ppl also say other games r bad without playing it and doesn’t talk about how everything is bad, all they do is say “It’s bad” and nothing else, they also say everything that they think is bad but not saying why, some ppl don’t even say it’s their opinion and acts like ppl that don’t agree with them r Satan. Nostalgia goggles don’t even try new new games and just stick with old ones and say the new ones r “bad” i know that i already said that but I’m talking about it in a different way now.
      It’s all just opinion in the end and i just said MY opinion about nostalgia goggles, that’s all...

    Sunshine was one of the first games I played. Heck, recently, over the summer, I replayed the game from start to finish since I completed the game about 5 years ago. And I think Sunshine is the better game in the catagories you listed, including the left out boss battles minus Bowser, but there's one thing Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Odyssey have in common you should feature in the next episode: story plot, and that is something that is lacking in Mario 64.

    People prefer 64 over Sunshine for these reasons:
    64 came first and established almost everything about 3D Mario games
    Some people don't like FLUDD but I love it
    People expected a sequel similar to 64 but they got a different game with similar mechanics from 64.
    Basically, people didn't like it because it's different xD

Also, I hate how people havent gave galaxy any credit when it comes to odyssey but really it has plenty if tgibgs that are galaxy esk. The main difference being that its open world. Galaxy is actually my favorite game of all time but I think idyssey mught dethrone it.

      @blakebakedacake4618 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gooya Simulator yes, there is but galaxy does nit play like a 2D game. Im sorry, it just doesnt. Its linear but mario controls similar and tou have to have 3D for the game to work. Its not open world but is still a great game that was meant to be a successor. People are bashing it for no reason. Also, galaxy is way better than3D land and 3D world. Those were literally supposed to be 2D mario in 3D. The only similarity is that they're linear. I hate how everyone, including nintendo, is disregarding it for being linear. To me, odyssey seema like a open world galaxy, ehich is the best of both worlds.

  • @tdark987
    @tdark987 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree that Mario 64 feels very dated today (and the plethora of recent ROM hacks just helps highlight that). My main problem with Sunshine, and I suspect most people's, was the progression system; the actual number of shines you had was completely meaningless, with completing the game depending only upon obtaining 7 specific shines - and the worst thing is that the game *never actually told you this*, meaning you'd waste hours on bonus stages and secret shines, thinking you were slowly edging toward some goal, when in fact you were just wasting time.
    The other issues were the *massive* difficulty spikes at times (mainly for the bonus stages, which you addressed somewhat) and the lack of variety in levels (considering that water levels are most players' least favourite level type, especially in 3D platformers, making a game where over half the levels are based heavily around water seems...questionable, at best).
    Mario Sunshine definitely had the better engine and better potential, but was often crippled by astonishingly poor design choices.

  • @miqueiasmichelon8290
    @miqueiasmichelon8290 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For me, Super Mario 64 has a different feeling caused by it's limited visuals. Evoques a sense of mystery and simplicity that seems closer to the 2D games. I felt that about the first Crash Bandicoot too. The subsequent games, even still on playstation 1, had more details and elements to deal with. The first seems like a lone quest on almost desert islands, and I like it. Mario 64 also has near desert landscapes, resembling the idea of a 3D world we could have back in the 90s about an universe we've been presented only in two dimensions by the time. It's the same about The Zelda games in Nintendo 64. They have many elements and items, but with a simple design where they all fit in a specific moment to be used (some of them once), and large spaces to cross and explore with almost no obstacles. So yes, it's about nostalgia, but it's about a specific factor of nostalgia: the simplicity of gameplay and almost desert ambient design of the first major 3D games, like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.

  • @snakevenom56
    @snakevenom56 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't see how you can say that 64 had better level design other than to prevent a blowout so you could unveil your "winner" when Sunshine actually has its levels make use of the mission structure instead of using it to just stop you from getting all th stars in one go like in 64 to pad itself out. That and the levels in sunshine are just more fun to play and explore around in

    _"Which Mario game has the best music? Either of the Galaxy games."_
    I find Galaxy's soundtrack incredibly overrated. Just because the pieces are orchestrated, they're not automatically better. I think due to an orchestrated soundtrack the pieces are prone to sounding extremely similar. Galaxy's pieces may sound good on their own, I find them to be boring during gameplay. They don't hype me up to play this platforming game, because they lack a certain energy and are thus too passive.

  • @popstarchamp

    Ironically, I feel like the main reason Super Mario Odessy doesn't have a hub world is for "logical reasons". They probably wanted to REALLY convey that your traveling the globe, and so doing something like teleporting to each world like in all the other 3D Mario's would suck some of the wind out of the sales of going to all the different locations that exists on the Mario Universe's Earth.
    At least that's my take on that issue.
    Plus of what I've seen of each of the worlds in the game, it feels like each kingdom is like what you would get if you took a 3D Mario level and sandwiched a small hub world (let's say about the size of Face Ship Mario from Galaxy 2) into the middle of it. So it's serviceable.

    I agree with just about everything you've said here. Some might call me a Mario 64 hater, but I consider myself a realist. It was an incredibly important game and is of course a classic, but it hasn't aged much better than the original Zelda or Metroid. Every single 3d Mario game has out done it. I personally prefer the the non sandbox gameplay of games like Galaxy and 3d Land/World, but even among the sandbox games it is the weakest.

    It would've been nice to pay mind to how compared to 64, Sunshine relied heavily on odd jobs and doing mundane tasks, even though it fits the premise. Imo Sunshine just had a lack of freedom in many regards, the fact that you have to get all the main Shines listed in each world, the fact that you have do all of the stages to proceed in the game where's in 64, you could actually skip a few courses when going to the final boss, and the fact that almost all of the shine sprites are always locked behind some task that you have to do, what Odyssey seeks to do is create a balance between the 2 games where they're many different tasks and jobs you can do, but alot of the power moons are also achievable through simply finding a way to reach them (since they're out in the open and all), creating more of that "platform focused" gameplay that made 64, Galaxy, and the 3D games so enjoyable, not that 64 and Galaxy were without those specific stars that you can only get by doing a job or beating a boss, but basically, in the context of the premise, Sunshine focusing more on Mario having to do jobs and tasks to gain a shine Sprite rather than simply finding them out in the open, does make sense, but I feel it takes away that sense of exploration or "Platformer style" that Mario was always known for. This is why Odyssey is aiming to be a best of both worlds senario, I wouldn't find myself having as much fun with a Mario game that focused more on him doing chores for people rather than having a decent blend with doing jobs and doing what he does best, Platforming.

      I prefer SM64. I find it more enjoyable. The levels are more game-like. Sunshine makes the levels duller by trying to make them part of delfino. Think of Sm64 as the sunshine levels with no flood for the entirerity of it. I personally prefer that. I get more fun from that.

      Alejandro Dulché I don't own any nintendo console since the game cube. But lets say I was a nintendo fanboy, if someone uses the argument before, why does it make me a hypocrite? Because I used it in a totally different context, because Nintendo does do some high quality stuff, so it wouldn't make me a hypocrite to say that something that was made six years in the future was better than the other product. I would be a hypocrite if after my statement I said "But the n 64 was clearly better than the Game cube"

    Okay so I can say that I enjoy 64 a lot more than Sunshine only because of the level design. Whenever you play a mission in Sunshine, you *have* to do that mission. In 64 you can run around and find new star locations without even selecting the mission.
    I can agree that Sunshine has better mechanics compared to 64, however I do hate how Sunshine doesn't have a crouch button to do things like long jump (just a personal nitpick)
    I played a lot of 64 when I was younger which is probably why I am used to the controls. If 64 had the tightened controls like Sunshine, then that could possibly make a perfect 3D Mario game.
    Great video though, your points did make sense and I can see where the final verdict comes from.

    Gameplay is not the most important aspect of every game. Perhaps for Mario it is, but that way of thinking is very limited and 1-dimensional. Gameplay is what a game *is* but it's not necessarily what makes it great.
    I like to think about it like this: a book *is* language, and books can become classics simply because of their high level of language. However, books like The Lord of the Rings, while having high level English, are classics mainly because of the story, characters, lore, and overall message. In the same way, video games *are* gameplay and can be considered classics simply because of their incredible gameplay. However, a game can become a classic because of some other aspect that isn't the gameplay.
    This idea that games only need good gameplay is what is ruining many modern video games imo. Yesterday I finished an indie game called RiME. The ending of the game literally had me in tears, not because of the gameplay, but because of the ending scene which the gameplay had lead up to. The gameplay strengthened the story and the story gave the gameplay meaning.

    • @heavydonkeykong5190
      @heavydonkeykong5190 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, but this is a game. Something you play. Story is good for games, but it should NEVER be the main focus. You can give a game a good story, you can remember game for its story, but story should never be a reason to call a game great. It gives more incentive to play, it makes the experience more memorable, but it doesn't ever make it truly better. A video game is something you *PLAY*

      So are books just something you read, and the stories and characters don't matter as much as the reading process?
      Are movies simply about watching?
      Are speeches simply about listening?
      No. It's the content that these mediums give us through their respective ways that truly matters. The stories, lessons, emotions. That's what truly matters.
      The same goes for video games. Although they have the word "game" in their name, they can be so much more than just games.

    • @heavydonkeykong5190
      @heavydonkeykong5190 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's different. Books are actually about the story, while movies are about the story, action (depends on genre) and the acting. Speeches are about how they are written and how the speaker delivers it. Games are about the gameplay. When grading a game, you look at where the mechanics are flawed and where they succeed. Scoring games by story automatically gives more story driven games like The Last Of Us an extremely huge unfair advantage imo. With Books and Movies, theirs no gameplay. Their expected to have a good story. People read books for the story. People watch movies for the story, and, depending on the genre, the action. People listen to speeches to be inspired. I play games to have fun. Would I prefer for a game to have a good story? Absolutely. But I never take it into account when scoring a game. I will probably still bring it up, since it's definitely still part of the review for me, same with the music, but as for the overall score, story and music don't effect it for me. What it effects it for me are the gameplay, level design, and bosses (bosses are always important, but their importance will always vary extremely depending on how prominent they are, imo). My favorite video game of all time is super Mario Galaxy 2, a game which, much like many Mario video games, has an extremely bare bones story imo.
      One thing that bothers me so much is the reason who The Last Of Us seems to be praised. I love the gameplay, but people hardly ever talk about it. Only the story. Many people say that it is the greatest game of all time, without even mentioning *THE GAME MECHANICS* even once.

    • @WideMouth
      @WideMouth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HeavyDonkeyKong
      When movies were first being made it wasn't about the story either, they were mostly ridiculous scenarios and were mostly art stunts. However, over the past 70 years, movies have now been fully fleshed out and use the film to tell a story.
      Games are only about 50 years old. I'm still waiting for games to get over what games are made of (gameplay) and start using it to tell stories that rival movies and books.
      I'm not saying that gameplay isn't important. Gameplay is what games are made of. However, like with books and movies, it's not so important how the stories are told as it is what the stories have to tell.
      Book tells stories through words, movies through video, video games through gameplay.
      Books told you about a story. Movies showed you the story. Video games let you experience the story.

    • @heavydonkeykong5190
      @heavydonkeykong5190 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not saying that I don't want story in games, I do still look forward to the stories of games, I'm just saying that when giving a game a score out of ten, the story shouldn't really effect that, because games with not very good stories but still have stellar gameplay and level design would be punished severely.
      I just think that saying that game a is better than game b purely because game a has a better story is simply unfair.
      Regardless, I have in fact seen video games with both great gameplay and stories that I honestly believe to rival that of other media, such as both Batman: Arkham Knight and The Last Of Us.

    For control I pick Mario 64, it's just snappier. I probably used to like Sunshine better, since I was more familiar with it, having a Game Cube, but watching Siglemic Speedruns back in 2014, you pick up how Mario controls at a deeper level, and if a person is having trouble controlling Mario, then from my perspective they're playing it super casually. As in playing it one time to beat it and then play another game, repeat the process with another game. And so not really retaining the games at a deep level. Some of the comments came off like that. Like complaining about the punching for example, and even the camera, it comes across more as comments from someone doing a casual run. Because if you played the game say 3 times in a row and then more, then something like punching is a complete none issue that you don't need. Something you do need is that Mario kick. That kick gives Mario so much control in a very simple way. So simply because of the way Mario moves, the game play goes to 64. It's not a knock, it's very difficult with how many games are out there, to get to know them at a deep level.

    "It's kind of a wonder to me why people think Mario 64 is the better game". I feel you. It's basically blind nostalgia as the game has clearly aged worse than any 3d Mario game made. It's not unlike the original Super Mario Bros. for NES. Yeah it's a solid game but its been outclassed time and time again. Both games are a huge part of video game history, but neither are particularly great games in the year 2021.

  • @unclemaverick7169
    @unclemaverick7169 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I get you probably can't go into very much detail with these sections, as it'd essentially turn the video into 2 full length reviews. But honestly, i think for Level Design, Sunshine wins by a landslide. We're not talking level themes, we're talking level DESIGN: How Mario interacts with the level through his mechanics and how the levels are designed around said mechanics.
    I feel you looked in the complete wrong place for Level Design. 64 is more restricted in its size and mechanics, as you're limited to the usual jumps and punches and stuff, as well as the hardware restrictions of the Nintendo 64. They have only a few available Stars per level with special goals that aren't just random busywork, doing random, trivial tasks like FLYING IN THE CENTER OF FIVE RINGS OF COINS. The objectives were largely somewhat bland and had no meaning behind them. Platforming was never too unforgiving and if anything, platforming was rarely the main focus, instead opting for exploration over platforming.
    Thanks to FLUDD, however, Sunshine's levels are allowed to be more open and be heavier on platforming by giving the player more control in mid-air. The Gamecube's hardware allows for the worlds to be larger and more "realistic", so to speak. It allows mario to focus on how he originally got around and how he fought stuff- Jumping. FLUDD solved the issue of being unable to control yourself in mid-air and the levels GREATLY benefit from that. The objectives are much more creative, if not in the basic concept then in the execution.
    Think about the Sand bird. Without getting PTSD flashbacks, preferrably. It's just another FLUDD-less level but the idea of getting 8 red coins in one of the secret levels, the only time you do so in the game to my knowledge, as WELL as having the bird fly around and fly on it's side from time to time makes the objective feel fresh and creative yet still be BASED around an extremely common mechanic in the game.
    What could have been another random, cryptic "Go to certain areas" puzzle in Sunshine like with the 5 secrets in 64, essentially became the Blooper-surfing level in Ricco Harbor, where you see it from the start, go "Hmm. I'll check that out" and then you jump on them, and blast off. You notice the Ink is gone next to the tunnel, so you walk right in only to find the very objective you were looking for! Then another Shine Sprite demands you use that skill to finish a (Timed? i forgot) Red Coins puzzle. You may have noticed that certain bloopers are faster, and if you're good at it you can use that one. It's not an original concept but it BUILDS on a previous one.
