I remember watching this at a very young age and loving the story. So sweet. And the book, celebrating 75 years, has been reissued. I bought it for my daughter and it is one of her favs. Thank you for posting this video!
I remember watching this along with all these other awesome classic disney cartoons back in the 80's with my grandfather. back before most people had cable, he had a satellite which he recorded alot of these from. i'd always look forward to spending the weekend over there and watching these great cartoons.
That's good. Have you ever watched the video of the Lennon Sisters singing the song "Ferdinand the Bull"(based on this Disney short,of,course) in concert,in 1958? Really neat-they dressed up in very Spanish looking apparel,Janet, the youngest, even wore a matador hat,and they even sang about and enacted the part about the bee bringing out Ferdinand's bad side, enough for the matador(Janet) to challenge him to a fight, but, like in the movie,Ferdinand managed to resist it and stick to his very much friendly nature-"when the picador missed him,Ferdinand kissed him, as he never learned how to fight. Ole!" It's on youtube-type in keywords "The Lennon Sisters,Ferdinand the Bull."
It was on the Lawrence Welk show in 1958, that the quartet of Lennon Sisters sang the novelty song Ferdinand the Bull. There are two different videos on youtube(from two different occasions), one take shows the bull smelling the flowers as,he comes out.
This is what makes youtube great - the ability to revisit great films like this. Thank you so much for posting this. It's absolutely one of my favori8te children's books and one of my favorite shorts. Thanks, again.
It's very similar to the part in Fun and Fancy Free's Mickey and the Beanstalk segment where Charlie McCarthy says this about Mickey, Donald, and Goofy's cow: "She's and udder failure!" The cow, hearing the whole exchange, takes offense to that remark and walks off.
Of course I used to read this in English and Spanish to my kids when they little. I read the book when I was kid so it was fun to read it over and over and over. I don't think they ever got tired of hearing it. Then, they had an artist friend of ours create a paining of Ferdinand from the book for my birthday. That was in 1995 and I still hang the painting proudly. We call the moment of enlightenment cause that it was his expression when he sat on the bee.
When I was little,I discovered the old book Ferdinand that had been my Mom's.I showed it to Mom and we read it together.I still have the edition of the book-and this cartoon is very close to the original story-down to the design on the opening credits.
right! I fondly remember the book too. I showed the 2017 version of Ferdinand to my Grade 2 children, I'm a teacher, and they loved it... Some of them cried! and then I found this version, which I showed them today... telling them this was how I remembered Ferdinand when I was a child :-D It drew LOTS of laughter! and love for Ferdinand...
+DJYawe Hawkins Curious that the infamous quintessential bad word would be heard at all here, considering swearing, much less, the f--- word, was rarely heard back in the day(at least not nearly as often as it is today!) Or even considering the fact that this movie is aimed at children.
This was actually a metaphor to the United States' initial decision to not join allied forces in WWII. Ferdinand represented the US who claimed impartiality most of the way. Ironically, the bee was sort of like Pearl Harbor. One little sting, and the beast comes at you full force.
Oh thank you sooooo much - brought tears to my eyes! Just like the book I remember from when I was little - I loved Ferdinand's nostrils as he sniiiiiiiffffed the flowers - this was awesome. Thank you!
Mmmmm!!....childhood memories. A friend and I were talking about memories from our childhood and I remembered the song by Tommy Steel called 'The Little White Bull' and I thought he was called Ferdinand. I was wrong and had the two memories combined in my mind, so it was nice to see them again. If only real life bullfighting was as delightfull as these events.
beautiful story displays the difference between loneliness and solitude and it's beautiful how the bull is just peaceful regardless of the actions of those around it just like we should be in life
So, late answer, I know :) I thought it was more of a "Even though she's a cow, she can be a good mother" The narrator basically said that cows are typically really bad mothers
I remembered that I had this book. I pulled it out and read it as I watched the video. The illustration adaptations are wonderful! Just lovely, really.
i used to have a video with both this short and the short lambert the sheepish lion. i LOVED that tape! one of the first cartons i remember watching as a child
TO:x note: Today is 4/3/2014 the 93 of 365 Ferdinand is a Germanic name composed of the elements: Frith "protection" & nanth "courage". To night WE fight Knights my sun.
This is really great, I love it. The main point of this story is that if someone wants to have a fight with you, sometimes the best thing to do is simply ignore them.
I think it's a pretty safe bet. As one who had the original book growing up, I'm impressed by how similar the opening credits are with the white flowers imprinted on the red background.
@xaviervonrottie It's a metaphor of the war. The bulls want to go in the fight just because of the fame even knowing that they could get kill, same way people want to go to war thinking they become heroes, where in relity they're only going to kill or get kill. That's the importance of a dandy as Ferdinand: he has found an happy way of living and he'll never accept to take part in a brutally fight. But other people can't understand...
I saw this as a puppet-type show at a fair when I was young. They really played up Ferdinand being taken away in a cart, and to this day it strikes me as one of the saddest things I've ever seen.
My family and I went to see Blind Side and the book is used frequently, I completely forgot about these cartoons, it's a real shame that the Hannah Montana-I mean Disney Channel doesn't play Silly Sympathies anymore, I always loved those!
actually...i'm not amazed by the fact that he's a peace loving bull, i'm more amazed by how amidst all the wish of the matador and those men for a bull fight, they never forced him LOL what a passive-aggressive thing in a sense LOLOL
I also wish to add -- Lifelong behavior. not just a "phase" he went through. Autistic people can not "grow out" of their behavior like neurotypical (NT) people. -- At 5:10 at the social event, the fight, he is depicted as being fearful of people (or the loud noise?). -- At 5:30 when he notices his special interest, the flowers, he actually engages someone at the social event, but only is interested in his special interest. -- At 1:30 Ferdinand is rather articulate as a young child.
Anyone want to consider a suggestion that Ferdinand has Asperger syndrome? -- Prefers his own activity and thinking. -- Does not socialize well -- "Sometimes his mother, who was a cow, would worry about him. she was afraid he would be alone all by himself." -- Violent outburst due to stimulation from the bee sting -- Ultimately very happy with his special interest at the end of the story. -- In the video, they depict his eye contact wondering around a lot, in his own world inside his head.
There's so much you can read into this if you want. I even got friends wanting to make the poor bull a junkie with his big stash in the "favorite tree" where he can sit and "sniff" the stuff away from his credulous mother (until the unexpected bumble-bee that is).
Poor Ferdinand. It seems he was chosen by chance. In other words, he got himself in a predicament by accident. And all he wanted was to enjoy life peacefully.
Disney had such a way of spinning the simplest little stories into pure animation gold.
I remember watching this at a very young age and loving the story. So sweet. And the book, celebrating 75 years, has been reissued. I bought it for my daughter and it is one of her favs. Thank you for posting this video!
I remember watching this as a kid.. It is amazing how Walt Disney was able to get into the hearts of people.. That man had a gift..
I remember watching this along with all these other awesome classic disney cartoons back in the 80's with my grandfather. back before most people had cable, he had a satellite which he recorded alot of these from. i'd always look forward to spending the weekend over there and watching these great cartoons.
This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I still have it...
I loved this cartoon as a little kid! Ferdinand was such a cute little bull!!
Haven't seen this in 20+ years...brings back the childhood when things were simpler.
oh god I can remember the good ol days. I loved this as a kid. All disney cartoons should be like this again!
This is one of my favorite all time shorts!! I have the book and the dvd!!! Go Ferdinand, the peaceful, flower loving bull!!!
That's good. Have you ever watched the video of the Lennon Sisters singing the song "Ferdinand the Bull"(based on this Disney short,of,course) in concert,in 1958? I love the way Ferdinand's mother looks angrily at the narrator when he says 'Even though she was a cow'.
shes like '' the fuck u just say?!!''
Like when the health inspector went to the Muppet Theater and made the mistake of listing Miss Piggy as a "sow"
when Ferdinand licked the Matador's tattoo, I couldent resist letting out a big "Awwwweeee" It was just so cute :3
Of course I used to read this in English and Spanish to my kids when they little. I read the book when I was kid so it was fun to read it over and over and over. Sometimes I can relate to Ferdinand, just be all by myself and minding own business.
How can someone dislike something like this? This is pure classic, best of Disney. :)
OH MY GOD!! I love this cartoon so much, have ever since I was a little kid. THANK YOU FOR POSTING IT!!
You know this is a story about introverts
This is far better than any CGI movie.
You just do you Ferdinand.
"But not Ferdinand!" XD
When I was little,I discovered the old book Ferdinand that had been my Mom's.I showed it to Mom and we read it together.I still have the edition of the book-and this cartoon is very close to the original story-down to the design on the opening credits.

It drew LOTS of laughter! and love for Ferdinand...
does anybody else hear his say "awwww, fuck!" at 6:10?
Yep.
+callmegeorge97 he totally said fuck dude no doubt about it
+DJYawe Hawkins Curious that the infamous quintessential bad word would be heard at all here, considering swearing, much less, the f--- word, was rarely heard back in the day(at least not nearly as often as it is today!) Or even considering the fact that this movie is aimed at children.
He definitely swore! I went back like 3 times
He said "Bah".
I love the grumpy faces Disney gave their bees back then. They actually look really cute. ^^
Anyone else think the expression on the bumblebee's face after he stings Ferdinand is humorous? Because I sure do. XD
Such a lovely story!
7:31 that face tho...
This was actually a metaphor to the United States' initial decision to not join allied forces in WWII. Ferdinand represented the US who claimed impartiality most of the way. Ironically, the bee was sort of like Pearl Harbor. One little sting, and the beast comes at you full force.
That's amazing, considering the book came out in '36.
Pat Gawne Don't kill it with logic. Even if you are correct. Lol!
It was actually written before the Spanish Civil war.
I can't believe we're getting a movie based on this lol
There's a storybook too. The movie will take the same story and add more details from the book.
20th Century Fox is giving him a full-length feature next year.
6:12 Dude says "f*ck" when Ferdinand **gets high on flowers**
Oh thank you sooooo much - brought tears to my eyes! Just like the book I remember from when I was little - I loved Ferdinand's nostrils as he sniiiiiiiffffed the flowers - this was awesome. Thank you!
Came here after seeing the new film trailer. I always thought it was a Disney-owned property, I never knew it was a book.
It was, one that I remember dearly...
Such a beautiful cartoon. Glad I can appreciate it as an adult.
Mmmmm!!....childhood memories. A friend and I were talking about memories from our childhood and I remembered the song by Tommy Steel called 'The Little White Bull' and I thought he was called Ferdinand. beautiful story displays the difference between loneliness and solitude and it's beautiful how the bull is just peaceful regardless of the actions of those around it just like we should be in life
This was one of my favorite stories when I was a little boy.
Why did the mother cow feel offended when the narrator kept stressing the fact that she is a cow.
For real😂😂
probably because calling a woman a cow is an insult?
So, late answer, I know :) I thought it was more of a "Even though she's a cow, she can be a good mother" The narrator basically said that cows are typically really bad mothers
5:51 and the matador thought Ferdinand hated flowers. He is called Ferdinand for a reason, he loves🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹
I remembered that I had this book. I pulled it out and read it as I watched the video. The illustration adaptations are wonderful! Just lovely, really.
The Blind Side brought me here
I love this! I even have the book, and my children love it. Thank you for posting this.
i loved that cartoon, i know it by heart, the whole cartoon...that is how often i watched as a kid :)
Wow, brings me back. They show this every Christmas Eve in Sweden, with Swedish voice over so the very young ones can enjoy...
i used to have a video with both this short and the short lambert the sheepish lion. i LOVED that tape! one of the first cartons i remember watching as a child
Now that Disney owns Fox (and by extension Blue Sky), maybe they'll add this short to the Blu-Ray release of the Ferdinand movie
The voice of little Ferdinand was voiced by animator Milt Kahl who animated much of his scenes, at the time he was around 30 years old.
When I was a kid I had a record of this story being read by Ricardo Montalban,
I must have listened to it hundreds of times.
I'm also from Sweden, i still have to watch it every year at christmas eve. Its tradition.
Beautiful! This is classic. I just read the original book to my five year old. It is dated 1938. Missing being a kid!
I LOVE THIS!! My Grandma has a video with this, Lambert, and Willie the Whale, all amazing!!
This was one of my favorite cartoons from childhood. I had the book and everything; it made me want to smell the flowers...lol.
Of course, real bullfights are very cruel but I love this story. Some very entertaining characters and great emoting of the animation.
TO:x note: Today is 4/3/2014 the 93 of 365 Ferdinand is a Germanic name composed of the elements: Frith "protection" & nanth "courage". To night WE fight Knights my sun.
I like it. Found this from watching "The Blindside" on November 13, 2011. Sandra Bullock is so good.
This is really great, I love it. The main point of this story is that if someone wants to have a fight with you, sometimes the best thing to do is simply ignore them.
right, loved that they read it in the blind side. I used to watch it as a child over and over again :D
Its gonna be a movie in 2017. No joke
Hairul Shamsul I'm looking forward to it
With Ferdinand voiced by...
*And His Name is John Cena!*
Its the war on christmas!
There already is
Ferdinand is a peace loving bull. He does not want to fight. He just wants to sit back and relax and enjoy life.
I used to watch this when I was 6-5, now I'm almost 17 and it's so sad. I'm missing my childhood :'(
Watching this film brings back childhood memories.
I also looked it up because of watching the movie BLIND SIDE.
HA! Ferdinand's mom look SO offended when the narrator said she was a cow! That was HILARIOUS!!!
the book (the story of ferdinand) that this was adapted from was my favorite childhood book so this video never will live up to my expectations
Yay! Ferdinand, Lambert, and the Reluctant Dragon are some of my faves!
The bullfighter says either "fah!" or "bah!" (dismissive exclaimation) not the F-bomb, but I did a double take too.
I think it's a pretty safe bet. As one who had the original book growing up, I'm impressed by how similar the opening credits are with the white flowers imprinted on the red background.
I love the mom's face when the guy goes "Even though she was a cow..." xD
@xaviervonrottie It's a metaphor of the war. That's the importance of a dandy as Ferdinand: he has found an happy way of living and he'll never accept to take part in a brutally fight. But other people can't understand...
Bull fighting is a cruel sport in reality. But the story of Ferdinand is one of my favorite childhood cartoons.
I like the fact that Ferdinand's single lick restores the Matador's BARE chest to a fully-clothed one! 7:02 LOL! Is he a magic bull??
#1 All time favorite cartoon.
Might just have effected me more than I care to admit!
aww this was one of my favorites when I was a kid I am happy to rediscover it
The new blue sky movie looks great
I saw this as a puppet-type show at a fair when I was young. They really played up Ferdinand being taken away in a cart, and to this day it strikes me as one of the saddest things I've ever seen.
when i was very young, i had the book, and it came with a 78 record with ther song on it. haven't heard this for 50 years :)
I've always found this cartoon to be both very stylish as well as very Nostalgic too.
God i used to watch this when i was like... 5 or 4 or something. Man this shit brings back a lot of memories.
ferdinand is awesome i watched this a lot when i was little
oh I remember reading the book to this. Still have it too, it was one of those big picture books. Loved the short, missed a few things though.
It is clear to me that Ferdinand knows that he could chosse to be a wild, crazy killer bull but he chosse to be a peaceful bull, and just be.
@NarutosButterfly that moment you realize that Ferdinand was the first to discover the relaxation of weed when he sniffed those flowers
I used to watch this all the time... I haven't thought about it in years though
This is one of my VERY favorite Disney cartoons, although 7:21-7:28 was cut from the Ink & Paint Club version.
I had never heard of this short either .. and yes, this book was indeed my favorite story too!! I this it's the epitome of the Taurus nature too
i remember that...
hehehehe good memories.
thanx 4 t post
that cow is so high on "life" legit no Fu*ks given
7:30 fernie is Lit AF
I love Ferdinand!!! He's so cuteee and sweet!! *-*
aww i used to have this on vhs when i was a kid and was reminded about it because of "The Blind Side" classic
The matador was a cariacture of Walt Disney himself. The rest in his team were based on the Disney animators.
Elliot Smith..
The Blue Sky Studio is going to remake this short film into the CGI animated feature film.
Loved this story growin up and must have seen this video
Ooh i remember this one.. When I was little I saw that one on TV! Soo cute :)
I also wish to add
-- Lifelong behavior. not just a "phase" he went through. Autistic people can not "grow out" of their behavior like neurotypical (NT) people.
-- At 5:10 at the social event, the fight, he is depicted as being fearful of people (or the loud noise?).

this is such a beautiful story.

-- Ultimately very happy with his special interest at the end of the story.

Awww i remember this. I watched this wen i woz a kid. I lurrrrv Ferdinand
