  • This is a video lecture for Advanced Reinforced Concrete Design focused on the design and analysis of shear walls. This lecture includes an overview of shear wall types, general analysis procedures for flexure and shear using ACI 318-19, and general procedure for shear wall layout and force distribution to shear walls.

    You know better than me that ACI-318-2019 says that we should amplify shear force for designing special shear walls.
    In the commentary, ACI-318 mentions to NZS 3101 code too.
    NZS-3101 and EUROCODE say for such an approach the PHI=(strength reduction factor )
    is equal to 1 .... phi=1 instead of 0.75 or 0.60
    Why is it different in the two codes?
    I send some document photos-(forgive me).
    and please guide me.
    thanks before.

    Thank you Sir for your excellent lecture. May I during bar detailing does it matter that the horizontal bars are given at N2 layer instead of vertical bars or vice versa? Could you please explain why that does matter?

    Hello. Thank you very much for your explanation. It was awesome. Can you give more examples?
    And I hope you will continue to explain the advanced Reinforced Concret.
    Good luck.

    At 32:20, why is that the shear rigidity is EA/L instead of EI/L where I = h*lw^3/12??? Appreciate if someone could enlighten me...thank you.

      I don't know whether you've figured it out by now, but I just watched the video today. I believe that for this example EA/L is correct since David is making the assumption that ONLY walls contribute to the lateral system, and since all of the walls have the same thickness (in this example) you can calculate the center of rigidity just by comparing the lengths of each wall.

    to calculate shear rigidity using your formula shown, does your E mean shear modulus? Under what circumstance, would you include flexural stiffness when calculating wall rigidity? Should you ignore based on aspect ratio or it is negligible. Can you further explain a bit behind the concept.

      E = Modulus of Elasticity
      G = Shear modulus
      so its not shear modulus :)
