The Forever Winter, My 10 Tips For Early Game
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.ย. 2024
- Here's my 10 tips for early game in forever winter (some of these may be changed in the actual early access version as i was playing on the version before early access but hopefully it's all relevant still)
Blows my mind that the reveiws on steam are mixed.... the ONLYZ reason this game is here in this state is cause the community wantted it and nie they complain that its not in a good state ooofff!! Some fucking people man!!! I personally love it and cant wait for it to develop more. Its a light in the see of dsrkness lately
Important to remember that the actual community that did want it are busy playing and are happy for the most part. The complainers are the casuals and trend chasers that saw some hype and jumped on the game without thinking. This game is specifically designed to punish those that don't think with poor impulse control. Their egos don't handle that well. Bad reviews have become the kiddies digital version of a temper tantrum. Some have some legit criticisms but the vast majority are just ignorable. The devs have some epic games cash in their pockets so I wouldn't worry about the whiny doom and gloomers just yet. Lets see where we are in a week or better a month.
@@machinech183 🤟💀🤟
@@machinech183I just hope the devs dont give in to the whiny fk heads.
@@machinech183to be fair, people are complaining about right things: optimization is bad, AI is janky, camera movement is weird, water system needs to be overhauled because rn it's too easy to get and too unfair to lose. These all are legitimate reasons to be upset. On the other hand, the reason WHY the game is as it is explains and justifies everything, especially considering that such early access has already helped to pinpoint some faults. Idk, people really didn't know sh*t about the game and thought that it's a completed project in spite of of *BLAZING* script "EA" on the main page and devs themselves saying that they put the game on steam just because fans wanted that? That's a complicated situation. Devs are awesome, but handling this dumpster fire will definetly take some effort that could as well be spent on the development, which will consequently lead to other community problems. Let's just hope that the studio will manage to get through this rough phase unharmed and do what we can to help them.
@@ArheIyAll things that were to be expected in an alpha.
My tip don't play like bigcry.
Lmao TRUE!
Facts
I'm having a blast playing it so far. Is there a reason you hate it?
@@ResEvilBoy???
Yeah i thought better of that guy 😂😂
First Tip: This is not Call of Duty. Enough said!
Its all that really needs to be said to some lol
I know he says that but he does do alot of shooting in his videos hahaha
Might be worth adding more detail to that tip to really get it through people's heads. "You are the weakest thing on this battlefield. You're basically the opposite of a shooter protagonist."
For anyone who's having issues with frames right now in the EA that's just released on steam i did too on the earlier build, go into graphics settings and find RESOLUTION SCALE, i turned that down to half and it worked for me so you could try doing that too and see if it helps you
Another one that i got off the discord that helps people, turn on vsync for the game and cap the frame rate (in my case it's capped to 60 fps, something i always do by default now for every game i play), it seems if you have it on unlimited frames it actually makes the frame rate worse for some reason
Thanks brotherrrrrrrrrrr
Thanks man
Its weird it was like only 10 to 20% using gpu cpu. But it's choppy, the intro anyways,
Having the Frame Cap set to unlimitech actually caps the FPS to 62. If you want more, you gotta set it to 120. Personally I capped my FPS to 75 via driver (due to 144hz Gsync'd display).
I'm on a I9-9900K, RTX 3080, 16GB of RAM and only SSDs and based on the requirements, I expected to get 30-40 fps if I'm lucky. Turned out those fears were wrong. I'm playing at my native 1440p resolution, resolution scale is native/off and most setting are on ultra with some very few exceptions being on medium and high instead.
On every single map I'm framecapped no matter how much carnage is going on. It was a huge surprise and relief. There are loading stutters though at the start of a map sometimes and when AI spawns. But it's pretty rare. I saw more stutters in most footage of the beta builds. They definitely worked on optimization since then.
Oddly enough, I cannot interact with the resolution scaling slider. It's greyed out for me.
Well done video. Simple, to the point, and poignant. Got home from 12h shift, purchased, installed, and blew through the first 3 missions without incident. Didn't look for action, didn't force action, looted when I could/wanted, and made it through just fine. Got caught once and fired upon and ran out of LOS. Lost them to other attackers attacking my attackers. Healed, went to exfil. Got off to read more about how it sucks. i9 9900K, 3080Ti, runs just fine and it's NOT EFT, COD, etc. You *must* remap your neurons to do things differently and I feel this is the core point of this game; learn something new. Thanks mate!
Make sure to keep your water up! It depletes in real time even when you aren't playing and you lose everything
@@Joe-ti7qd Yep. Knew this going in and doesn't bother me. Got 2 days of water (1 container) on 2 of the 3 runs.
Once you beat the initial 3 or 4 quests, you get access to a lot of quests. They seem to be repeatable and every single one gives you water, I've played about 10 hours total and I'm at 25 days worth of water. Just pick out the easy quests/ones you know you can do and get them done as you play.
First of all you are the first yt-er who played the game as is should be.
No complaining about the basic gear. (Then again what is the basic gear for??? Placeholder?)
Secondly thx for the tips!
3rdly keep it up man. :)
Rozkil's already the TFW GOAT!
Thanks for the awesome videos ❤
Thank you so much for the tips! (A minor detail, the gunshots in your video were so much louder than your voice)
Amen thats how guns should sound.
You've shown some of the better gameplay out there, which was sorely needed. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's gonna help so many people to start off on the right foot. Hope you keep covering the game and tips as you develop your gameplay.
1. Don't actively engage
2. Don't use the Surplus rifle unless you're completely broke
3. Water isn't hard to find - focus on money and quests
4. Get lockboxes (have 14k credits) [every weapon adds a new one to buy at the shop]
5. Lure enemies away with sound
6. Don't forget about silencers
7. Level up your favorite weapons
8. Prestige characters ASAP (+health +maybe more speed)
9. Upgrade your rig (backpack) large storage bin adds 2x space
10. Use 'loot all' at the beginning and gun it for the exit
Problem with the loot all is that you can loot a HK triggered item, some of these are the neural interface chip, advanced toolkit, and weapons parts. Carefull looting these they can and will spawn a HK squad and they will not relent untill you are dead.
Then again, you may have a question to kill HKs and with a co-ordinated team and a few 20mm cannons, you can get it
@@HandsFreeProductions i try to avoid HK squads if i can help it tend to loot high risk items at the end of the raid and then bombrush for exfil, so yeah you could fight them but its not required and risky.
happy i watched this while taking a break, i was hard set using the surplus rifle to "save" on gear
Likewise. I have an AK (74 I think) with a drum magazine in storage, and I am scared of losing it. I'm gonna give it a try.
@@Sky_Explorer same i stockpiled a few weapons will using the surplus rifle. Enjoying the gameplay far more now that im just running a pistol. No joke everything does more damage than the surplus rifle 😂
Thanks for the info, 15 minutes before it goes live and cant wait

I haven't tried the resolution slider yet, but I'm running it decently at medium fx settings. My gear is around 9 years old, upgrading soon.
Good for you man!
Glad to hear this. A lot of newer games are really making the Skylake show its age. My main rig is also a 6700k, with half your RAM, and a 1080ti. Hopefully it should be fine. If not, my laptop has a 10700F w/ 2070s mobile that should do the trick.
Wow! Ty for the reference point! I'll see how my ryzen 5 and 3060 wil do.

Nice to find your videos, easily better Forever War gameplay then most people covering it (I can tell by your tone you’re aware of how baffling it’s been).
Noticed a bunch of shorts are hidden, your choice or YT being YT?
3 videos that were supposed to be shorts but youtube uploaded them as videos 😒
Dammit youtoob!
Really enjoying it so far. Its basically everything I expected and more. Thanks for the tips.
351 subscribers??? i predict big gains for this scav
i didn't expect to blow up like this...all this happened over 3 days lol. definitely taken by surprise
You actually die WAY SLOWER than I thought you would in this game.
I figured it was going to be more or less pretty realistic and that 1-3 shots from high caliber weapons would instantly kill you.
Drones and infantry don’t kill you too fast but the bigger guys will absolutely one shot u 💀 I got my head squished in one blow by a Europan Brawlers
Great video, and don't change it, no music.
It took me 5 minutes to git gud. After 3 hours of play I was already up to 21 days of water with a couple more barrels in the stash and prestiged my character of choice 3 times. Countless hours in various games that Forever Winter takes inspirations from, helped me transition into it lightning quick. I'm enjoying it alot and can't wait for it to grow. My biggest issue with the game is the clearly broken AI spawns. I'm also not a fan of the character progression and their talent trees. I hope the latter gets a rework. So much stuff there is just... questionable.
Walked into my first two raids, survived both with 50k profit. Crouch, snoop, dip. Thanks for compiling this, I didn’t think to try luring yet. That’ll be big.
Been refreshing Steam seventeen million times, keeps adding time! Had to watch this cuz eventually it'll be ready to download!!
Thank you for the tips! Good to know loot all is a viable strategy and to ditch the starting gun :)
my tip : at the beginning DON'T PRESS LOOT ALL, if you pick a neural link without knowing what it trigger, you're dead pure and simple. Loot at the loot, but this one for now until you are perfectly aware of the consequences, avoid it like the plague. ;)
@@maelan2922 yeah that’s changed since pre early access, wasn’t a thing on that version though I guess that’s the risk with these types of videos. Will be addressing it in my next video 🙂
All this "water" talk - People just don't understand the purpose it serves; Think of it as a "season" timer, or EFT's wipe cycle. Something super easy to obtain, and really shouldn't be worried about if you're just playing the game.
doesn't it completely lock out players with little free time for playing? What if you can only spare an hour a week? That enough?
@@bbbbende most matches i've seen from youtubers who had early preview builds were able to finish missions within about 10 or so minutes (the first few levels at least), to them a couple times and try to scavenge for water (which i've heard isn't the most difficult thing ever) and you'll start banking up water supplies - i've heard you bank bank up to a months worth of water, which means if you don't have time to play a lot, as long as you get some water banked up you should be fine!
@wuberkz1692 the current water cap is 80 days. I played just under 2 hours, just casual grabbing water when I saw it. Between quest rewards and that I had 20 days of water.
Thanks for the tips, man. Spent all night getting killed for the first rig upgrade mission, cant wait to try again
Video came in just in time, thank you for the tips!
Keep in mind some items are traceable by the enemies because they have like a tracking device .. so I've been screwed over a few times because of this. So I'm against the Loot All tip you gave.. only loot all of you are planning on grabbing and immediately going to extraction
Will you stream the game or upload it on your channel?
probably be uploading to here
Keep on keeping on
Thanks dude, appreciate that! This tips realy helps a lot!
I'm new to extraction shooters, so the format's a little different for me. I'm glad I found your video!
That bit about loot all and then gtfo is underrated. The clue is in the name - you're a Scav. So scavenge. I get no end of giggles watching various yt'ers try to hero shooter their first few maps and get absolutely cleaned.
Pretend you are a rat stay on the outside, hid where you can and only shoot if escape isn't an immediate option. Once you kill or hit something then escape is your first choice. Buy a mule early and have carry your loot. Learn the map layout.
I have this video to thank for the fact that my first three missions were all successful extractions! Well, this video and huge amounts of luck. ...We won't talk about my next five missions.
Thank you for the tips, I’m playing this as if I’m playing Escape From Tarkov.
Thanks for the excellent tips! Looking forward to applying these moving forward.
Good tips ! Bought the game and can't wait to immerse in Forever Winter !
what is your setup? System req is insane bruv...
I didn’t find the game that hard. I played for about 4 hours yesterday and ended up with 22 water cans and 576k. Water mechanic is just fine. People complain over anything. This isn’t a typical pvp extraction game. This system still allows wiping and gives you a system that demands you to stockpile when you have the time so you don’t lose a bunch of progress. Can’t wait to play again after work
You mentioned dropping the starting guns but I can not seem to un-equip them or drop them during a raid to replace them with another weapon I find. How do you drop them or did you mean to just start the raid equipped with any non-starter gun?
I started a Shaman and it has Sprint Expertise skill and Skill too haul more stuff.
Bought it as soon as it was possible and got the banging soundtrack as well
I thought the silencers were there for aesthetics since the guns still made noise, good to know! ;)
also some mad lad will run with the starting rifle, bet xD
I do know Silenced weapons still make some noise so i bet they are going for realistic silencers instead of movie quiet. And if that's the case then thats so cool!
@@thememeilator2633 yea what I mean was that the guns don't sound like they have a silencer on, even though they do, they will probably add that in the future.
@@Thenotsofamousone ah i see what you mean. yeah they will probably add it in the future.
So if I understand it correctly the water decreases by 1 day for every 1 day that passes IRL? Does it decrease more while actively playing? Cause if water is not that hard to come by then it's only an issue for people that can't play often and makes it an inelegant way of pressuring people to play regularely. All while everyone that can play often basically can ignore the mechanic, when that is the group that needs extra mechanics the most to be challenged.
1 water is 24 hours of IRL time. You can get water as quest rewards or extracting with water barrels. Every barrel is 24 hours and I assume as you upgrade your rig youll be able to extract with more water
It's a mobile game wannabe woth that mechanic with the worst stealth I've ever seen. I refunded it. What a total letdown.
@@Joe-ti7qd it's super underdeveloped and they were completely open about it being so, I don't blame you but what exactly did you expect?
One of those games, where after the 3rd raid death. I was like ok. Time to go watch a how to on yt.
I’ve used the training mission to get water and money from the stuff the cyborgs drop and I get I prestige leveled five guys but I’ve done ashen mesa a lot and that map is great for water and finding great things to sell for big money
Any fav class?
i play mask man
Nice mate, concise and to the point.
Fast Tips, good tips, make sense, thank's.
Im curious to buy it. But i think Dayz is hard so not sure if i should get involved with this.
My fear with loot all is triggering hunter killers..... if the game is going to punish me for high quality lot when I'm not equipped to defend it.
My body is ready for the Jank! I'm ready to be thirsty for water! Bring. It. ON!
My Toptip. Buy RTX 4090 for ~ 55-60 FPS. Currently costs only 3K.
I am so jealous seeing people play this at such crisp framerates. My rig is NOT weak by any means with an AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 8-Core Processor 4.50 ghz, 32GB DDR5 ram, and a 2070, and yet Its best if I keep the game on 30 frames so I can play it lol
Water's not hard to find. That's not why it's a bad mechanic.
"Get Soiylancers" 😂🙏
But jokes aside, great advice. Gonna spam this video in Steam Discussion, when people start posting shit because, they can't read
8:08 I love how it cuts from "oh no i've been spotted" to "oh look a bunch of bodies here to loot! how lucky of me!"
Great video man things i actually wanted to know
Is there a timer on raids like in Tarkov? or can you take as long as you want?
From what I understand there is no timer but instead there is the hunter killers which will hunt you down if you do a thing (it’s still a little unknown at the moment but the best guess we have is grab a very valuable item)
Hunter killers arw the time system amd it is based on a number of things. Time, quality of loot and quantity of loot will summon hunter killers that will hunt you down until you exfil. Thos needs some tweaking imo but yeah you're timed.
@@ResEvilBoy At least that sounds better than the screen just going black because you didn't get to the extract before the timer ticked down.
0:10 Why did you have to go and tell the COD nobs that. Just the idea of them throwing a fit because they can't kill everything has had me smiling since release.
Good common sense stuff, aught to work on your volume balancing between your voice and the game audio. Good vid, appreciated.
Eeeeeyyyy you have a voice 😂❤ .. awesome tips brother thank you so much 🙏
Is it better to prestiege than to spend xp on skills?
Thank you for the helpful tips!
Is there a limit of items you can have in your base (innards) storage? Also is there a system like penetration like using heavy weapons to destroy heavy units and mechs?
you dont want to // shouldn't be fighting heavy units or mechs in this. You're supposed to be weak.
@@stickyfingers9998 sure thing. Until I get some good gear. Then I'll be calling my mates, we'll tear that mech apart, sell it on the black market and be set for life. In the macro city of Lost Angels.
Fighting mechs is supposed to be like a bossraid
Can you do it? Yes
Should you? N O P E
To actually answer your question, no we dont have any hard data on things like ballistic penetration yet. But with the game being out in early access I'd expect that to change pretty quickly, once data miners start digging into it
@@TheMrDewilno. You aren't getting it.
The game gives you a free surplus weapon every life and you say you need to replace it no matter what? Id say that utilizing the free weapon with 0 risk sometimes is definitely a strategy if you are just going for a quick loot extract. I think this is a core beginner strategy so i think your advice is misleading
thing is if the extract has enemies around it...that surplus rifle is going to get you killed. 10 rounds and you can't say take down a drone with one magazine
meanwhile with the SVD you can watch 1:04 again and count the shots it takes the SVD vs the surplus just as an example (both drones have a similar amount of health as far as im aware) it's 150 damage per shot from the surplus VS 300 damage from the SVD and to me thats a no brainer
even the AK you are given at the start of the game has more damage than the surplus and if you are playing the game right you shouldn't ever need to use it...as i said in the video you should only use it if you have no other choice
Great video Dawg
Good vid mate
Is it happening with anyone else where their game only crashes on the scorched landscape map?
thank you! cant wait to get it!
How do you loot piles of dead people without repeatedly opening the same empty bags… is there no way to cycle through it specifically select things
Aim with your gun at the thing you want to loot, worked well for me.
Was trying for awhile to look certain bags/guns and it would only open the same 2 ( ontop of the rest)
@@Mal-ng7zm Yea same for me until I got close to the "thing" and aimed down on it.

How do you open or use a lockbox?!?!? Please help!! I found a large one and can’t figure out what to do with it, it’s just in my inventory
Most of the time the lockboxes are just for vendor cash. The large ones are worth around 15K. Every now and then you'll find one that has stuff in it. That is where the 'open all containers' button comes up when successfully extracting.
@@christopherings7996 so I just sell it to a vendor? And can I open the lockbox up after the extraction if I did not open all containers at the end of the extraction?

How do you pick up weapons when in raid
you need a different backpack, you'll be able to once you unlock the one who sells them in the innards

game release in 45 min ! ;D
Holding off purchase until they fix that water death problem, not gonna get punished for having real world duties and not being able to play the game frequently.
Full water reserve is 80 days
Right like you can't play a few days every 80 days?
I'm sure it'll be one of the first things to get modded out. But also yeah, 80 days is quite a long time
It's not a problem it's intended that you lose everything when you run out if water, so it won't won't be getting "fixed"
Play some other game, I guess this one is too hardcore for you 😅
@Medieval1-1 nothing hardcore about it. Hardcore should be about mechanics, skill. Not mobile game type gotcha bs.
Yeah cya on one year
brooo what do you mean early game tips the game just came out
i played the pre early access version
fix audio levels
how are you even running this game dude lmfao
I like your intentions for this kind of content. Can I suggest a better script and stucture for the points you're making? You've obiviously written down points important to your gameplay but there needs to be practical examples rather than repeating the point multiple times. Maybe interlink certain points an all. Defo got a sub and like though. Looking forward to refining the process.

One thing I don't think most people are aware... this game is PvE only. You don't get to shoot other people, you just play against AI. Every single entity you see on the map will be AI. There's no other players. I was really looking forward to play this game as a gritty alternative to Tarkov... but what's the difference between playing this or playing a single player game? Disappointed.
There are quite a few PvE games that are successful, even if not massive AAA games. There's definitely a niche for gritty PvE games. An example is GTFO. A far less serious example is Deep Rock Galactic.
And seemingly there is no game like this where you are a scavenger trying to get resources from way stronger warring factions. You could maybe make it PvP, but it would be an asymmetrical PvP, which is an acquired taste.
"Competitive" games have fried a whole generation of gamer brains. "Whats the difference between this and a singleplayer?" None. Is that supposed to be a bad thing?
Never heard of helldivers 2? Altho they betrayed their players trust, at the start it was one of the best games for multiplayer(PVE).
It's definitely just you that was unaware of this, lol. That's the whole point of the game.
@@TheOnlyOneDed Mate, I've been playing FPS online since 1997. Excuse me if I wanted this to be PvEvP instead of just a AI bugfest experience.
Tip 11: Don't play Mausoleum or your game will crash and you'll lose your loadout 🥲
OMG surplus rifle SUCKSSSS, seriously that was a great tip.
Became a millionaire in the first 4 hours. Just run mesa and wait for firefights to end. Save up for the biggest backpack for your character. Avoid Nexus unless you want a very bad time and a decreasing trader rep. High valued items trigger Hunter Killers, just GTFO!
