      This is what we call naive empiricism, where the scientist finds "relief" in reductive understanding. Whatever that feeling of liberation inducing nihilism, it's contentment from the idea that everything and anything can be modeled and subjugated by human reasoning. In actuality, it's confinement into self-contradicting notions: meaning if life, but meaningless universe. Ironically, a meaningless position.

    • @FPSIreland2
      @FPSIreland2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dunebuggy1292 lol, as an empiricist, come back to us when your philosophical bullshit can deliver a testable hypothesis! And why must life have some greater “meaning” beyond whatever meaning we derive internally, or to each other? Arrogant to assume we were put here for some greater “purpose” (whatever that may mean in this context), rather than just the result of millions of years of evolution. You may find it confining, because you may not be able to conceive of a universe wherein humanity has no greater purpose, but it’s far more liberating to learn we set our own meaning than having it set for us by some greater power.
      Frankly, this spiel of yours reads like some sanctimonious Petersonian bullshit.

Her excellence somehow enhances her humor, which is rare imo, but she communicates her emotional relationship with her work so eloquently at the same time. And as usual, your questions are so effective at eliciting the most profound elements of her experience.
    And imo, you're more like a Phil Jackson to her Michael Jordan. Never forget that elegance, especially within language, means simplicity. I adore that she prompted you to ask your question proudly. Very fine and inspiring entertainment.

A wonderful and captivating conversational dance between two humans who have a strong sense of security in their own being and the open expression and examination of it from their unique perspectives.

    Both weren't vibrating on the same level and noticed lots of misalignment of views on topics and interpretation.
    It's amazing to see how lex kept an open mind while the guest was pretty much close minded for a scientist.
    Lots of previous guests practicing science showed an open mind and the ability to show that they knew so little.

    • @clarasousasilva4205
      @clarasousasilva4205 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There are a few (speculative) hypothesis on the utility of phosphine: like most molecules that life makes at an energetic cost it is likely produced for complex behavior. For example, it could be used for communication (simpler molecules would lead to ambiguity), defense/attack (it is poisonous to most life on Earth, so plausible) or, my favorite (though unlikely), as part of a bartering economy (because phosphorus is a limiting nutrient for life). I discuss this at length in my papers if you'd like more.
