I am currently fasting from secular music because it aids the spirit of fantasy or spirit of maladaptive daydreaming where you daydream about living a different like being successful or rich or in a relationship where you are only loved . Essentially living outside of your reality because you are running away from your problems or trauma and I knew God was calling me out of it but it didn’t want to listen . I was stubborn and made myself an idol and I wanted to be glorified instead of being content in the struggle through Christ and knowing I have the victory in Christ and not run away which was prideful and selfish. But by God’s grace and continued mercy I finally listen and I peace and I am learning so much from the fast and ofc Christ and I am free and will be completely free from the spirit of maladaptive daydreaming and secular music. Anyone facing the issue I would suggest to obey God and listen he knows what’s best and we are not our own God . You have described something that I have struggled with my whole life. I did it so automatically that it felt normal.
I've read the Bible many times in my life, and every time I would read about casting down every vain imagination, and bringing every thought into captivity to Christ, I would feel like that was for me. I quit secular music a long time ago, but I would do the maladaptive day dreaming with Christian music too, or even with no music sometimes.
God is gentle and kind, and has gradually ( when He knew I could deal with it) , healed my emotions and mind, to where I do it less and less.
I’ve been struggling with this for the longest time and am still struggling currently. I’m dealing with spiritual warfare as well lately and the prayer you pray here feels like it was said specifically for me. I thank you so much for not being afraid to speak the truth that most people don’t want to hear and choose not to be open to. May God open their eyes to the truth as well.
Yeah I agree 1000%. Nobody wants to talk about this, How 99% of the human mentality is caught you in delusion. Is scary. The truth is just bizarre to me.

I was convicted to delete my music app, before I got saved I had various secular music as it led to me being prompted to daydream each and every time but as I began to read the Bible I had no desire to listen to that type of music so I deleted them all and found great Christian songs and created playlists,but I still found myself daydreaming about myself and my ego even on songs that glorified God smh. So, later on down the road I ended up deleting my music app but even with that I go on TH-cam and instead of listening to Christian music I went back to secular music that I haven’t listened to in almost 4 years. The root of the issue is the spirit of fantasy bc it’s not godly to daydream and listen to music which is something I still do. Just as you said in the video about intentions on how some songs can be good but we can have wrong intentions but thank God for his mercy and grace upon our lives. I’ve been daydreaming since I was 10 and I’m 20 now but I pray for deliverance from it. It’s a hindrance and a stumbling block of false hopes and imaginations that aren’t real and utterly a waste of God’s precious given time I can feel myself slowly coming out of it but it’s something that I still battle with

I have the same problem but I still daydream without the music 😔 like when doing the chores. Washing the dishes, doing the laundry I find myself daydreaming.

I really don't understand why daydreaming is 'bad' someone mentioned being content in their struggles?? Why... no one is happy to suffer we are encouraged to use our imagination as children yet condemned as adults. 😩 I just don't get it this life is so screwed
Thank you for sharing this message. You hit the nail on the head for many of us who needed it. I’ve tried to quit listening to bad secular music and have gone back a few times. This time I think that I’m gonna be alright with The Most High’s help 🙏🏽. I listened to a couple of clean secular rap songs and some non-secular music without daydreaming for a couple of days. I’ve been doing this since I was like 9 or 10. I’m 39 now and am so blessed to have someone younger minister to me in this area. I played the trumpet and would sing at church and love all kinds of music genres including gospel/Christian music. But I would find myself daydreaming and disassociating to that music as well. I used to think that I was the only one who did this and felt ashamed/embarrassed. Now I realize that it’s been a flesh coping mechanism that many of us have used to help us get thru hard times and trauma; an escape for us if you will. But this doesn’t honor God and I’m so glad that He is using you to get our attention. I have been asking Him these last couple of days to show me the areas of my life that He wants me to work on/things for me to get rid of. And here He is, answering my prayers with this video. That being said, thank you once again for harkening to the voice of the Holy Spirit. I will keep you and everyone who commented in prayer so that our Heavenly Father completely delivers us all from this spiritual bondage thru music. And that we may be able to enjoy non-secular and clean secular music without making it or ourselves an idol or going to LaLaLand while listening to it. Our Heavenly Father has bigger and better plans for all of us Jeremiah 29:11. He will heal us and give us the victory, Romans 8:37.

We have DID, so dissociation is like our norm, but we’re Christian and have the Holy Spirit. He’s helped a lot with out dissociative symptoms and switching is easier and faster, especially when praying in tongues, but we’re still individuated alters, we’re more functional multiplicity now tho.

i feel it depends on your heart posture. if you listen for a “feeling” , adrenaline rush, or have a deep need/dependence on it- it may be an idol in your life.
pray about it! if God wants it out of your life, you will have a conviction.

This is tough for sure. Something I remember is that God has the ability to take anything sinful and evil and use it for good through his mystery and so as we continually fall on our walk, we mustn't judge ourselves or others but strive to continue our repentance.
I am a musician and have spend so much money on equipment and education and time on listening and study and now I dont know what to do. I cant really listen to music much these days, i dont enjoy it much and I havent made music since my confession. I pray that god uses my gifts for his glory.
Also most Christian music is horrid. Its just secular culture with the words changed. The most basic pop formula with mass hypnotic appeal and full of pride and vanity. We are told to die to the world and much of Christian contemporary music is just the world reskinned. It doesn't feel genuine. I really struggle to find glory in it. Lately I have turned to the Byzantine chants of the Orthodox church which denies the world fully. Two other bands I have found that seems to honestly express the glory of Christ through music is Wovenhand who isnt in the pop music idiom and someone he collaborated with called Bull of Heaven which i can't tell if they are Christian, they definitely use non-christian images and titles but i dont find myself dissociating in the same way.
Sorry lots of thoughts here as this is my moment in struggle.

i did not want to listen to my convictions either. BUT- i experience so much heartbreak, pain, bitterness, and loneliness from continuing it. it weakened my relationship and trust in God. i could sense Him crying over my decision. He loves me & just wants to see me prosper.

I’ve long noticed something among Christians concerning this topic. I personally don’t think it’s always bad to listen to something secular as long as it’s clean. If you don’t listen to secular music that’s fine. One must behave according to one’s convictions. But I’ve noticed that the same people have no problem watching secular movies which are filthy or less than godly. For some reason that’s considered ok.
I was really struggling with negative thoughts and feeling hopeless, and kept listening to the song "Life Is a Highway" over and over and I kept feeling better and had no idea why. It got me through some hard times. The song got stuck in my head, and I got paranoid about how often I was listening to it and wondered if the song was CURSED (I had bad experiences with cursed music before...) and started praying lol
I learned that it's actually a song about God
...and that Tom Cochrane wrote it after experiencing hopelessness, and asking if there was anything good in the world after he saw terrible things while volunteering in impoverished nations. The inspiration hit him all at once and he finished it in one day or something.
I think most people associate the song with car commercials or the pixar movie Cars
i understand if people as christians wont listen to secular rap music anymore, but for me, i still listen to alot of dubstep and electronic music in general and so forth and i dont see any problem with it, because music is ultimately linked to fantasy and creativity and all this is made by God. eating is also fleshly, you feed your felsh with it, so fasting is good but if you would fast ALL THE TIME, you would die. so why always fast in secular music ? what about christian metal ? its worship, God is not a pink pillow, he is a jealous God who has also put emotions like rightous anger in us, which is best expressed in christian metal for example.

What is wrong with secular music? I don’t recall anything about not being able to listen to music, this sounds man made
it’s not music itself that is bad, it’s the oppression and temptation that comes with it. what we consume, we become.
hence roman’s 12:2! we have to renew our mind to align with God’s will daily. secular music (mainly mainstream) does not have topics that align with God’s will. it feeds our carnal mindset, not our Spirit.

Secular music is so easy to overlook and it is very powerful! It took me a very long time to see this and I am so thankful God was gracious enough to open up my eyes to this. So many still do not see it though, we need to keep praying for their eyes to be opened as well 🙏 It’s also important to point out that not all worship music is good either, we really need to be careful of what we listen to everywhere! If the honour and glory is not being given to God and God alone… we should not entertain it ❤

Well said!! I’m on day 7 of 30 days with no secular music and after that I’ll go to God and reevaluate my relationship with it. Music can’t be what I go to for energy and comfort or getting my creativity flowing. All of these, I can go to God for. And until I do, I definitely need to practice relying on Him only🕊️

still struggling with it, when life got hard i always turned to music to heal. But as a former secular artist i know for a fact that there are dark forces behind some music, i saw other artists putting witchcraft spells in there music and i know there are witches in warlocks in the music industry fulfilling the agenda of the enemy, be alert Brothers and Sisters

I was off and on with carnal Music when I want right with God. Even then I was selective what I listened to. So in a sense I never really had a problem giving it up . When I recommitted To the Lord in January There was no desire for anything that was of the flesh . God delivered me completely of everything , no struggles of anything music being one of them . Carnal music is a manipulation tactic strategically place by demonic elements to be subjected to the flesh to carry out all the world’s emotions , pains , struggles , oppression possible . The sound , the instruments and beats itself drowns out the message or story given in the music . You are giving in to the sound and subconsciously taking in the devils ministry . There is no peace in the devils ministry it will continue to perpetuate . But as she said , and I and going to give the scripture for everyone to just stay seated on this word , this scripture .

Hey, I gave up listening to music with bad lyrics a while ago, now I listen to gospel songs or other secular songs that don't have bad lyrics, I first examine a song before putting it on my Playlist, but I always wonder if I should give up those songs too.

“If it’s not of god it’s not good” is true, but also it’s really up to your own conscious. Paul talks about this a lot, because many believers had become legalistic and other believers get condemned over nothing. God can use anything he wants. God in the past has used many unbelievers for his kingdom purposes. I have had many moments with God over a “secular” song or movie. But I have also been led astray by many secular things. Being a Christian we should be careful with what we intake but also remembering God’s spirit is in you, will guide you, and if you walk in the spirit it takes care of a lot of these problems that plagues believers. Encouragement for the saints…

That’s happened to me too! I’ve listened to secular music and Christian music but still have struggled with daydreaming/dissociation. If I catch myself, I’ll shut it off, listen to worship music or I’ll listen to the audio bible.
i appreciate the radical boldness to cut out secular media and idle thoughts. fasting is definitely helpful whenever our mind has drifted away from God towards something else, and many times we are being called to completely cut certain things out of our lives. however the black & white view that everything is either of God or evil is most likely going to lead people into a fear-based legalism that can make the person a quivering mess, walking on eggshells through life because everything can be evil. that's not walking in victory but in fear of the dark, and in many cases this kind of extreme living has led people to abandon the faith, over an unnecessary attempt to be overly pious (Ecclesiastes 7:16).
also not every emotion or sentiment is a "spirit". this language is unhelpful and also feeds into a fearful mentality that has taken over many charismatics. Christians don't get inhabited by spirits when we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. we either have God's Spirit dwelling within us, or we don't. we can be oppressed by demonic spirits externally, but a simple cry out to Jesus will expel it. deliverance ministry for use on Christians is unnecessary at best... but that's a whole other topic.
James 1:17 says every good gift is from above from the Father, and Philippians 4:8 clearly lists what is good for us to consume with our minds. if the only singular thought we are allowed to have was the express, direct, literal worship of God, then that list would be much shorter. on the contrary, it says "whatever is ..." and the implication is very much that those qualities, find in any good thing, can themselves point our thoughts to God. not to mention that we even see the Apostle Paul quote secular poets/authors multiple times, so then why would he do that if those would certainly qualify as "evil"? all truth is God's truth, all truly good things can reveal aspects of God
ultimately i believe that if a Christian struggles to relate something secular back to the thought of Christ or to use it as a launch point to come to Him in prayer about something specific, then it's an issue of discernment. it's possible either that the whole thing is inherently bad, or that the Christian lacks the spiritual maturity (Romans 14) to consume it in moderation, with a clean conscience. in either of these cases then of course it's time to cut the offending media entirely, at least for a time. however, if the secular thing has been tested (1 Thessalonians 5:21) and it proves to have significant value according to Philippians 4:8, containing any of what is listed there, then i believe the issue is more that the Christian needs to learn to enjoy all things to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:29-31). there is definitely the possibility of filling up on secular media and thus pushing God out of our thoughts. again, it's a matter of discernment and honesty before God, as you said, to follow one's convictions and obey the Holy Spirit. "whatever is not of faith is sin" Romans 14:23

What’s wrong with secular music? Are you aware God can move through things of the world too? Secular things too? 1st Corinthians 1:27 says “But God has chosen what the world calls foolish to shame the wise; he has chosen what the world calls weak to shame the strong. He has chosen things of little strength and small repute, yes and even things which have no real existence to explode the pretensions of the things that are-that no man may boast in the presence of God”. I’m a dedicated Christian. And aside from Christian music which I will always listen to. I still listen to plenty of secular music too. I go to there concerts too. Romans 8 says there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. And yes I know the Bible does say give no place to the devil. But the only way you can give place to the devil is by making it clear to God that you don’t want anything to do with him. And if you keep willfully doing sins you know aren’t right. That’s the only way you can eventually lose your chances with God.
I did this alot on purpose while living in abusive household, so I dont really feel shame about it thankfully, most of the music I listened to was pretty good and gave me hope to get out tho, I now dissociation disorder and ptsd, I dissociate all the time even when not listening musics, I taken music breaks but music therapy is how I cope with ptsd and flashbacks so its conflicting,I've been trying to heal this got while really giving it god now cause the whole I was trying heal myself and my therapist on a pedestal etc*

i used to feel the same way- until the Holy Spirit convicted me of it.
daydreaming takes our time away from God, and feeds the sin of pride. when we daydream, we are no longer in an environment where God is God- we become the god of our daydreams. we also are no longer present to be used by God while on earth in that moment. it is about the heart posture. God may place a dream on your heart, but if of Him, it will not take you away from Him or feed a sin.
Music is the same. If it is not bringing you closer to God, it’s only bringing you away from God. there is no grey area. It also takes our time, which is a gift from God.
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31)
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.(Rom 12:2)

This was rough to hear but needed. I feel this way about myself in general. I’m 27 now and I look back at my former self, and realize that I, myself was the music. Stay far away from Travis Scott. Just looking at his album art and imagery, I can tell the man is gone and completely sold. It’s not even just him either. There’s so many. Hip hop was always my vibe and I’ve always had the attitude, personality and swagger for that scene. The entire hip hop scene though at the end of the day seems to come out with nothing but greed and lust. It’s hard to leave behind when you’ve attracted money as well as girls, especially the girls that at that time you wanted. Idk if I’m going too far here but yea I guess this is what I used to be about, and why it’s so hard to stop greed and lust when you can get what you desire. Since being reborn I have stopped lusting and playing as well as quitting vaping and also weed. The addictions are leaving my spirit and mind and body, and as this is all happening, the more I want to listen again to this music. It’s spiritual warfare. My breakthrough is very close if not already begun. Satan is a poser and a wimp. God bless you.

some moments i used them for background or prayer music- but i kept finding myself thinking of the words/mindsets i used to indulge in.
God can get us to a point where it won’t affect us, but we have to strengthen our trust and intimacy with Him to get to that point of renewal.

I know people talk about romantic secular songs "conjuring" up a spirit of lust in them, but I would love to know exactly what you're referring to please! whatever brings your thoughts away from Christ, and makes it hard to pray to Him and feel His presence, that is what is sinful. it might be that it's when you constantly fill up on a secular thing or a thought, or it might be just any instant that you engage with this media or thought that your spirit sinks low, that's for you to discern. it takes prayer and being honest with the Lord, and asking Him for the wisdom to know what to do. I don’t like secular music
In 93 I got saved , I was given a book by watchman nee called living sacrifice , I read thru it & during a church service felt what I didn’t realize was conviction and I got rid of comics I was collecting & my secular music. I decided to only listen to Christian music , which I only listen to this day, a few times I’ll listen to world music. Songs I listened to like Alice In Chains “man in the box or bleed the freak” I was disgusted when I read the lyrics. I remember when listening to secular songs a lot of times, maybe cause of my imperfect hearing I had trouble at times understanding what they were saying with the mumble jumble singing. Which is probably done to hide a message. I feel like to this day that Christian music is just as good if not better, it’s not hard to tell what is anointed and what isn’t.
I do enjoy the band apologetix that takes popular songs and adds lyrics with Christian message. The real purpose for music is not so much to entertain, but glorify God and help us connect to Him.

He wants you to rebuke any spirit of loneliness, doubt, and insecurity. He wants you to listen to His voice before you listen to the enemies lies about you & who you are. Run to the word and use the sword of the Spirit (verses) against all accusations from the enemy.

Hi! Great question! I had very similar questions!
It’s not about “can’ts” and “cans”. It’s about listening to the convictions we receive from God through the Holy Spirit.
God does not want to withhold things from us, he wants to guide us to seek things that give us true life.
If something is not feeding your Spirit- it is only starving your Spirit.
If you feel no conviction with those kinds of music, by all means listen to it. We all have different convictions at different points in our lives. However, I would pray and ask God to reveal wether they are truly helping you or just filling your time/giving you adrenaline rushes/feelings.
I did a 5 day “music fast” when I first started recieving convictions. I journaled most my thoughts every day to be able and look back at my Spirit health during the fast. The first three days were HARD. The last two I felt so much stillness and peace.
I also started making non-secular playlists with similar beats to music I preferred (reggaeton, bachata, corridoi, rock, rap, indie, etc), but with christian lyrics.
