    Victor isn't playing the bass guitar anymore, he's playing Music! He is probably the most influential bassist of our time.

    I've always admired how Victor can come up with these inventive, funky melodies. He can lay down a solid groove, play an out-of-this-world solo the next, and not miss a beat. It's like he never runs out of fresh ideas. He can do so much with only 4 strings. More aspiring bassists can take a cue from him instead of adding more strings to get out of a creative rut. Not that I have anything against basses with 5 or more strings, but Victor certainly proves the possibilities of a standard 4-string are far from exhausted.

    That transition between 'sections' at 6:20 is just orgasmic!
    I remember watching this the first time (of many) in the library. When that little transition took place I let out this huge sigh, shook my head and pulled the stanky face. I went back and replayed it about 4 times and each time I got mad chills down my spine! I then soon realised that my sighs of agreement for this beautiful musical bliss weren't internal...everyone in the library was looking at me with the dirtiest expressions on their face :/
    Still, no regrets :D
    One of the best bass solos on TH-cam in my opinion :)

      Just a little and at this stage in the game, pick it up if you ever get a chance to.. Victor has created a name for himself here in Town ( Nashville ) it's called hardest/busiest player in town and that is why i own a Fodera Yin Yang.. Thank you Victor !!!

    As a bass player myself, it makes me worry a lot less about the trouble I have trying to consistently alternate my strumming fingers when I see a guy as talented as Victor dominantly use his index finger. Some people will tell you that you MUST alternate. Victor is living proof that you don't.
    I also love his slapping. He does it very cleanly with such little motion of his thumb. Can't imagine the amount of time and effort he's spent playing the bass

    • @xPrincessBridget
      @xPrincessBridget 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm glad you pointed that out! I was worried about the same thing after going through some bass lessons to get better. I tend to play a few notes in a row with index finger sometimes myself, and according to some lessons I am completely WRONG. So blah to rules! :)
      Victor Wooten actually talked about out-of-the-box thinking in one of his series 1-4 videos, I forget which one... but he is VERY inspirational, and the fact he doesn't follow those rules just makes him even more inspirational!! You can really take it and apply it to other things in life too

    • @danielchang8722
      @danielchang8722 10 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      I think the finger alternation is a must if you are a beginner. After having that down, you can try different other ways. I think that if you want to break the "rules", you should first learn them :)

    • @chrisseger2346
      @chrisseger2346 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a must if you want to be able to cleanly at faster speeds, so it's fair to say you should indefinitely learn finger alternation. I don't necessarily think a beginner should worry about it all too much. While I do still occasionally fail to alternate, I found that the better I got at bass, the simpler it was to fix the issue. Maybe because I don't have to think about my fretting hand as much anymore. Everyone learns differently, though. If you were meant to play bass, everything will fall into place with hard work.

    • @jasonDSGPerformance
      @jasonDSGPerformance 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dominic Van Divner I think he legitimately do whatever he wants at this point lol, I'm sure he's not too worried about alternating

    • @xPrincessBridget
      @xPrincessBridget 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Okay, new mentality after another year of experience in playing since my last comment. I now don't see it as a necessity to do *all* the time, but definitely something you should learn how to do for when you need it. I use my ring finger on my picking hand to mute strings by the bridge, and have never actually seen anyone do that. The typical tutorial teaches to use your palm for muting. Guess what, either way is fine, but my technique and theirs create 2 different sounds. Mine is plucky, theirs is smooth. What if you "slap-through" while muting? New sound there too. Whatever works; the goal is creating the music. Sometimes when we do weird things, we find new sounds in it to use in the music. The alternating is just another tool in your toolbox of techniques to get your music out. :)

    I first heard of vic back in high school in early 90s. I couldn't believe what I saw. 20 years later I sit on youtube still in absolute awe. I love the other "big names" but vic is the greatest bass player ever, in my book. also one of the most musical musicians ever. I hope his haters listen to the first 5 mins of melody, dynamics, timing, and soul before they resort to their, "all he does is slap..."...smh

    Victor Wooten is just from another planet...for me I'm not surprised 'cos he started playing bass at age 2!...and he's now 49-50yrs there about, so 47-48 solid yrs of practicing and learning...I guess this groove doesn't come on a silver platter, it takes years to do almost exactly what he's doing!

      your a fucking period

    • @mikescanlan4653
      @mikescanlan4653 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      No. This is how Bass Virtuoso's should play. Your standard bass player does not need to have these kind of jobs as the role of bass in music is simply to fill space, support the music, and keep a reliable steady groove going and to cover that low-end spectrum. Often times, simplicity more then accomplishes that

    • @Raezioo
      @Raezioo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Correction: This is how a bass SOLO should be played. I play bass myself, but not on this level. If you play your bass like this in a band, it would sound awful, because like Mike Scanlan said, it needs to fill the gaps. So before you say things like that, reconsider your opinion first.

    • @Raezioo
      @Raezioo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ale Montero When i'm talking about filling the gaps, i'm not talking about just playing simple boring bass lines ;) I hate those bass lines too, they get way too boring after playing them for i while. I just meant that, like i said before, a bass solo should be played like this, this is indeed a great performance by a bass master. But when playing in a band, you should play to crazy with a bass. If you want to sound different than the rest, play guitar. In this video, the bass is a solo instrument, but in a band, it's a supportive instrument, and that's something you have to agree on. Playing this in a band would sound awful, if the bass wasn't the main instrument, which it usually isn't.

    • @ShatterRainboom
      @ShatterRainboom 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thomas Raes Ale Montero both of you are correct in aspect. I *was* originally intending a basic opinion. But, if you need a good solo bass this is utterly beautiful even to an ear approached normally with metal but, band wise these techniques would suck. They gap and do not really support. techniques, as used by Tool, are powerful fast and quite "solo" like but it doesn't matter for Victor here for he uses bass as a solo instrument

  • @blaheehoo

    bro, I genuinly enjoy this type of music, it is seriously pleasurable to my ears, and it puts me in a certain state of mind...like a drug...not to mention it's brimming with pure talent. It's okay if you don't like it, but it's your taste, and everyone has different taste, so you can't go around saying nobody likes a certain genre just cuz you don't like it.

    Ways to increase the "mwahhh" are soloing the bridge pickup, turn the neck pickup all the way down. Also use roundwound strings and finger pick closer to the neck. Keeping the action low helps too. Should get plenty of the mwah regardless of pickups.
