  • To celebrate Anzac day I set off into the Victorian high country in search of adventure. Snakes, Steeps and Sambar were all part of a fantastic time and a great reminder of the freedoms we owe to those that gave so much.

      Bolt-Action Productions cheers buddy. Backing it up straight from fiordland wasn't easy on the legs. Certainly a harder game once that temperature goes above 18 hey. 👍

      NJMS EDC good stuff buddy, we are planning now too. March to May is now locked in. Just need the snow to come in at the right time this year coming! Happy to help where I can mate, we will back in there a heap through May so might catch you in the mountains 👍

      @@IntotheMountains awesome. I'm a Hunter Valley NSW guy so March/April and Fallow/Red's for us. Then I'm keen for a crack at one of these elusive Sambar. Have got a few great trophies locally and in QLD with RIDGE so southbound it is next. Possibly looking between Dartmouth Dam and Kosci. Unsure yet. Looks like good country and I'm pretty fit to wander in. Seems a good option as we can drive in there pretty simply to high National Park.

      Kingsley David hey mate, this is the garmin epix, I believe it’s discontinued now. Great little watch all the same 👍

  • @ningaloo67
    @ningaloo67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for sharing, watched all of your clips, been informative, what time of year and approximately how long are the stags in velvet?

    • @IntotheMountains
      @IntotheMountains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey mate, in this area the stage are typically in velvet from January through April. That said with such herd diversity and Sambar covering all parts of the state in different temperates with different food sources it is not uncommon to find deer at any part of their antler growth cycle year round. For the most part to increase your chances of finding an animal in hard antler the best time to hunt this area is mid may to august. 👍🏾

    Hey, well I am brand new to hunting and I have a few questions, how do you know where the set for camp before heading out? Also if you’re in a more flat terrain do you just head anywhere as long as the wind is in your face, also how can you tell if a deer is safe to eat?

    • @IntotheMountains
      @IntotheMountains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Garry Johnson hey buddy all great questions. I use topo maps to plan my route and that gives me a good idea of the land ahead. Generally with a hammock if you have trees you'll have a spot to camp anywhere. Flat terrain is pretty rare out where I go but if I do find some the tent can be used. Our deer species rarely carry diseases and the best way to learn is join your local ADA branch and get involved there. Happy hunting

  • @MountainMan_NZ
    @MountainMan_NZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    nice work Daz; if you don't mind me asking.- what elevation were most of the deer. and did you notice a general difference in elevation between hinds and stags. thanks mate keep up great work. jamie

    • @IntotheMountains
      @IntotheMountains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MountainMan HuntingFilms hey buddy. They were pretty spread out. I observed them from 300m to 1100m. But yes the stags were all higher than hinds by at least 150m

    • @MountainMan_NZ
      @MountainMan_NZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Into the Mountains cheers mate. and in terms of food / green pick did you find there was better feed up high? all good intel for my next backpack trip in late May

    • @IntotheMountains
      @IntotheMountains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MountainMan HuntingFilms the green pick was just poking through around 700m. I was surprised how high it already was considering not much rain. I think by the time you go in the tops will be going off. I'd aim high for sure.

    Are those the 10*42 slc or EL's that you were using? would you say the 10*42's are suitable for hunting dense areas ?

    • @IntotheMountains
      @IntotheMountains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi George, i'm using the SLC 15x56 in that country in place of a spotting scope. They are great over long distance and low light. Yes the 10's are fantastic in dense areas.

    Hi Daz, my bro and I are planning a hunt in high country in a month or so we both have new Warbonnet ridge runner hammocks with superfly tarp. Do you use a under quilt with your hammock or can you get away with using a sleeping pad as insulation that time of year? Any tips would be appreciated Daz with staying warm for first time hammockers.
    Cheers

    • @IntotheMountains
      @IntotheMountains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great trip planned boys! Mate definitely, 100% use an under quilt. I can’t stress enough how much it will suck if you try anything else up high at this tome of year. Like many before you, I’ve seen everything imaginable to save a few buck in insulation but the outcome is always the same. Some frozen testicles! ⛄️ another tip, be very particular to the tree conditions and what above you before tying off. ESP if it’s a fire damaged area 👍🏾

      Into the Mountains cheers Daz that’s a massive heads up coming from you. We really appreciate your feedback and we will get onto purchasing the UQ’s, we are pretty pumped to be able to stay out where we end up each day and keep moving forward exploring new ground instead of backtracking to camp. As always you are the go to for info thanks again will let you know how we go we are coming over from Adelaide. Cheers again
