This is peak youtube. Engaging. To the point. Niche. Informative. Thought-invoking.

X and Pearl were splendid. MaXXXine is mid af. Sloppy writing. Cheesy ending. Obvious villain. Good looking film though.

agree on the cheese factor in MaXXXine unfortunately...

I didn't even think about how they showed her at the movie premiere before the movie was finished. That's very odd lol. I like Ti West as a director but his scripts are very hit and miss. He also needs to hire an editor other than himself.

Agreed! Normally I'm very pro Ti West... but there are areas he would benefit from getting some help with

A horror movie channel! 👀 While watching your video, I wondered it the movie had suffered the Writers Guild of America strike. It started May 2nd 2023 and the shooting of MaXXXine was made in april and may 2023, seven weeks. Don't know if it has a link but it could explain why the last part of the movie is mid. The setting, the characters, cast, etc. Everything was to make an excellent movie. But I felt, not a bad choice for the story, but a lack of subtelty in the writing. Like it wasn't really finished. Didn't guessed the twist tho, was like 100% it was a character from X (who would have survive, SOMEHOW), but I totally forgot about the father shown in X. 😄 Pearl will remain the gem of the trilogy. 😮

I had a really good time with this. A fun movie for sure. Hope we get more from this franchise

I found this film to be incredibly disappointing. The script seemed like a rough draft that needed to be flushed out and cleaned up.
Pearl was awesome. X was solid but nothing too special. I kind of hope that Ti West does a 4th film, as he said he wants to do now, because going out with MaXXXine was pretty lame.

Rough draft vibe is a perfect description! Fingers crossed that if he does a 4th he'll commit his whole heart to the project and it will feel more like a finished piece

I am in a minority because I think Mia Goth is unbearable to the point that I won't watch any more of her films... I've seen X, Pearl, Infinity Pool and High Life, and I can't deal with her any more.

It was mid at best. I really like the vibe of X. It had a Texas Chainsaw feel to it. I'm in the minority but I hated Pearl. It was a boring slog of a movie. The ending scene was the only thing I liked about the movie. By far imo The House of The Devil is West's best film. It was set in 1983 and it's one of those time travel movies because it took me back there to my senior year in high school. Every song was from that year or 1982. The way the movie was shot to even the film stock screamed early 80's. Good creepy little satanic panic flick.

Great review! I actually think pretty much the same thing. Just saw it tonight and I thought it was.. ehh.. although I did like it way better than X. I thought X was really lame. Didn’t see pearl. Visually the movie was great, but what exactly is the substance behind the style? The only sense I can make out of it is that she sacrificed the dream of fame in exchange for ridding the world of her psychotic father, and that when she tells herself she’s a star, it’s because she’s proud of avenging the death of the victims rather than the self indulgence of fame and fortune. Which is summed up as a the severed head of herself on the bed that she stares at in the last shot.. she’s thinking that’s all I would of ever been to the world. It was an alright flick, but there’s an old one from Abel Ferrara that was a lot like this one called fear city that I think is much better

If you wind up having an intro to your videos I can provide you with some music. I do ambient as well as heavier stuff in my side project (Synaptic Revolution). It’d be on the house. I really like what you’re doing and would love to help.

I thought Maxxxine looked beautiful, was well made, had a good soundtrack ....but lacked a complete story. It was OK. But I was disappointed because I really loved Pearl and X

Personally I felt that Ti West ran out of story ideas and tried to substitute style for it's lack of content. I also found the character Maxine boring compared to Pearl.

  • @Macsimus75

I agree on everything you say. This movie is the weakest of the trilogy (?) - soon to be a quadrilogy. Especially I disliked seeing all those unrealistic plot events (aka the father having the film from "X"). Also, Kevin Bacon's character was quite irritating, besides not very useful, considering how "powerful" the killer is (he did not seem to need the aid of an investigator....).

I was so hyped for this movie. The setting is near perfect (from the trailer).
I was never so dissapointed in a movie ever. It delivered on nothing. Super boring.
