I am by no means on an elite level but I love this! I fully support this even though I am an average athlete I just hate seeing people "running" elite waves just to get early start time. Like you mentioned that takes away from actual elite athletes trying to enter into the correct wave. Thanks for this awesome news can't wait to hear more about it!
Agreed, I've run a public foot race held here locally (Bloomsday) and for the public waves, it gets crowded super quick which if your not careful can really jack up your pace which can slow you down overall (generally public waves your not going to be setting any records and a moderate but above all steady pace is best). Most wouldn't think it has that much of an effect but a constant stop and go of waiting for a slow person or crowd in front of you can derail the grove your muscles get into when your racing, compounded of course by time lost waiting to pass, the effect on your pace though I think is the worse low key killer.

I am looking to do a spartan ultra next year and it says that there is a mandatory package pickup a day before I don't think I can get the time of work what happens if you don't pick it up do you get DQ and what's in the package if you know thanks
For Ultras you DO need to be there the day prior to pickup your packet since Ultras start before regular race day registration even opens. Your packet contains your bib #, headband, and timing chip

I definitely see a trickle down effect for both the elite and AG qualifications; so they may be taking data from this past weekend and making final decisions.
First off, nice shirt :D, i got one of those from years past haha, but I think this is a great idea, I deff aint elite, but it would suck to get knocked out or not get to purchase one and joe schmoe got one just because he wants early start times haha.
I have never run elite and never will but I don't see the argument for the elite qualification requirement. To me, if someone wants to pay the extra money to run elite and watch Webster or Atkins run away from them for the first ten seconds of the race, let them (outside of championship races). Or maybe they just want the earliest possible start time. That vast majority of the elite corral are not podium contenders anyway.
The argument is that the people who are registering for elite that are not elite are taking spots of those who actually are. There's many venues where men's elite sell out (not so much for women) so these people are taking up the spots of those who actually deserve to be there. These are also the same people who are cheating, skipping burpees, ect ect and just giving the sport a bad name. They (Spartan) want to bring the competitive side of things up and make it an Olympic level sport. That can't happen with those kinds of people in the elite waves
Why would casuals pay more to race elite? I want to race elite, but since it's my 2nd OCR ever, I don't want to spend the extra $ or wake up early, when I know I won't place top 3
There are many who want the earlier start time so that they're done earlier and have the rest of the day, but also in summer races the heat is much much worse at say noon compared to 730
