  • Cellist Camille Thomas celebrates the human resilience on 'Voice of Hope', her newest Deutsche Grammophon recording. Her selection of music mirrors her desire to move people through compositions that express a sense of peace and love. The album opens with violinist Richard Tognetti’s transcription for cello and orchestra of Maurice Ravel’s “Kaddisch”.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the raw, physical emotion that a voice can convey, and it goes far beyond any form of intellectual comprehension,” comments Camille Thomas. “With each note I produce on my instrument, I have always tried to reproduce a voice, one that sings, talks, murmurs… a voice that shouts and loves.”

What does Camille Thomas' interpretation of Ravel's Deux mélodies hébraïques convey emotionally for you?

deep threat and Joy. Almost similar to the effect triggered by the arrietta theme on Beethoven op. 111

It is very beautiful! I think Camille Thomas is a very genuine, honest artist who puts her heart and soul in the music that she shares with the world. I watched her debut in NYC last year, in the same place where other giants of cello and classic and jazz music performed many years ago, including the cellist Emanuel Feuermann, who played the same Stradivarius that she is now playing. Camille Thomas convincingly conveyed her joy and respect and gratitude for being among the greatest and owning it and wearing the badge of honor in a very humble way. I think her intentions with this video also relate to the same sense of owning who she is and why she does music: as a vehicle to convey emotions and sending a message of hope. I think she is brilliant and beautiful and a gift to us during such troublesome times.

The piece has a very intense deep sense of sad emotions that can only be released when heard! All the pent up hurt, pain, sorrow anger and all the indescribable array of feelings that only this piece can pull out of a dormant mind! The musician opens a deep mystical realm to which is a rare developed talent!5 🌟 Rating 👌❤️👍🌹🎵🎶🎭

Thank you! It is incredibly beautiful both the music and the clip itself. In fact, it is a synthesis of two different arts which have met.
I do respect people saying they do not like WATCHING it, however, I have understood the composition and really appreciate it as ONE piece of art. There is so much space for interpretation and I could easily write a story based on that song. In a nutshell: I love it!

Kaddisch (in Aramaic, ‘qaddish’) is a liturgical chant, the Magnificat of the synagogue service, but also sung by mourners after the death of a close relative. The mood is one of contained ecstasy, and tension is built out of the jarring between the melismata of the voice and the simple accompaniment with its unremitting G naturals.

Ecclesiastes 7:4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Camille's playing is incredible. Ravel is a master. The additional theatrics are appreciated, but also distracting and unnecessary. Unless you're including a cinematographer on the level of both of the aforementioned artists, you will always be taking away from the experience, in my opinion. However, thanks for making this performance available.
