If i don't have bone meal, will natural rooting hormone work, because I do have access to english willow, aloe vera, a little honey, cinnamon & i think some ACV works too. That's quite a few ingredients, but maybe each works on a different aspect, i dunno -- anyone?
I just harvested my first zucchinis and used it in my dinner for the family and to say I'm proud is a understatement but I have the Rusted garden channel to thank for making it thru when the plant got vine bores, aphids and a little powdery mildew to top it off thought it was on the verge of dying but with the helpful tips and tricks videos my plants made it thru and are going still going strong. Thank you Mr Pilarchik for these videos.

Congratulations to you! that zucchini must have tasted especially good just because you grew it yourself! I had similar challenges with growing my Kale this year, but with Gary's tips I triumphed over adversity & my kale is thriving & beautiful.

Kudos on the information about compost, fertilizer, and bone meal -- that's what I came for and I appreciate you providing it. At least in my neck of the woods (just north of Boston), mulching the newly-planted garlic helps enormously. If you have them, a foot or so of fallen leaves works great. Another option in New England is about 6 inches of salt marsh hay. Also, my garlic does much better with 8" spacing. When the bulbs are closer together, they compete with other and none of them get as large.
The spacing does make a difference for large sizes. I always tend to plant closer. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Indeed, thanks. And a word to the wise -- salt marsh hay comes in tightly-compressed bales. A single bale goes MUCH farther than you think it will, because the volume explodes when the hay is separated enough to spread.

Needed a refresher course on fall planting so of course I came to The Rusted Garden. Sure enough, I forgot about the bone meal. Thanks, Gary. Planting today (11.14.23). Abt normal for Iowa Zone 5. Late enough to avoid too much green grown, early enough to allow for root development. Going to have to water it in because it's been a dry fall and no let up in sight...

Thank you for the recommendations. We are in zone 10b (Southern California). Lat year, I made many mistakes with the garlic I planted. This year, I will plant my garlic 2 inches deep in December (no frost dates here) and purchased garlic varieties that do well in my zone. Fingers crossed!

Thank you Gary as always! Northern Illinois here, zone 5a, we usually have a frost by October 10th, however this year weather is unusually warm for fall (80s and 70s vs 45-50s) So I'm waiting a little longer to plant my garlic. I'm so thankful for your teaching channel!

I'm in Maryland also. Planted garlic in October last year and we got hotter weather. The garlic sprouted about 8 inches and I was stressed. I added some mulch to try and insulate the greens, but in the end as you said, it didn't matter. The winter didn't kill the greens and the plant didn't seem to care. Still enjoying the harvest.

Last year I planted in a deep container in mid-October - covered with 5-6 inches of mulch. Stil way too soon. Then - the super sub-zero freeze of Feb 2021 - we got 35 below. Lost it all. This year, bulbs are going in the ground, deep and well covered - in mid-November. And like you, hard neck works best in my area. Doing Russian Red and Chesnok red. Cuz my other hobby is cooking. :)

Thank you for the good videos! I agree with you that hardneck varieties are better suited for harsh winters - at least it is that way here in Colorado. I believe a subscriber asked a question about garlic in Colorado on your podcast. Hopefully they see this. Next year I will be planting 5th generation hardneck "Music" variety garlic. It is extremely hardy and also tolerates the frequent freeze/thaw fluctuations we have here in Jan and Feb especially. Would also recommend trying that in your zone since it's one of the longer storage types for hardneck varieties. I also enjoy the magenta tint to the bulbs, super pretty! Thanks again for your great content! Most of the varieties I grow now are based on your recommendations and your work with AAS.
Music variety is a good one. I typically do hard neck but am doing both this year so I can show the growth. And thanks for listening to the podcast. We are just figuring out the format. Hello, I planted my Garlic (GERMAN RED HARDNECK) the last week of October 2021 and I am in zone 5b. I pulled 1 up just to get a sense of the progress on July 9th this year (2022) and it is not very big (about the size of my thumb). The root system seems to be pretty good, but the Garlic is very small. The plants seem to be very alive and not yet dying off at all. I water 2 times a week since it has been fairly dry this year. I have been researching and see that others are harvesting already. I am wondering if harvest time can take longer sometimes? I have a picture but not sure if I can attach it. Thank you, Scott
So in southern New Jersey zone 7A my garlic went in exactly when you suggested before the frost and because it was a more mild winter. I have had at least 12 inch growth coming out of each space where I put a clove through the winter. So I guess it’s just wait and see? Harvest when I see that green die off?
Later June is typically when it is ready. Thanks! Over 1500 gardening videos on my YT channel. Here is how you can support me, & The Rusted Garden... Please Subscribe & The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/

Garlic is one of the easiest things to grow! For arid cold areas like Colorado a good 6 inches of mulch is necessary for best results. Also many of the varieties I grow get quite large bulbs and I have found a 4 inch spacing is too close, 6 inches is better. I have heard even 6 x 8 inches but if you offset the 6 that is good enough if you are tight on space.

I was told you have to put the bulbs organic in the frig for at least 6-8 weeks , it depends on where u live . I live in Texas so We normally don't get below freezing like this past Feb. God bless you Josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas 🙏🏻
Sometimes. Look for organic garlic grown in the US. I’ve successfully grown organic California garlic from the grocery store several times. If it’s imported from another country or is not organic then it has likely been sprayed with a sprout inhibitor and won’t grow.

Gary, Great video and appreciate the soli prep and plant spacing advice. Saw down in comments you mentioned prepping whole cloves in refrigerator prior to planting, and your response to post-planting mulching with cardboard. Interested in your advice on both. I’m south of you in Carolinas, Zone 8a and even after first frost, I am concerned and curious about preserving looseness and protecting the surface soil and subsurface beneficial worms and critters, perhaps pine straw I rake from my trees…perhaps??
Pine straw works. The soil life is used to the frost, so you don't have to over worry. Check out my new gardening PODCAST Gardening Coast2Coast at gardeningcoast2coast.net with CaliKim. My first time planting garlic. I planted it a few weeks ago. It stayed warm and my garlic sprouts are about 12 to 15 inches tall. We are expecting first frost tomorrow. Is it a problem that my garlic grew that much? Too much green growth? I panicked and ordered some more.
It should be fine. It will just stop growing. I think it is good you ordered more. Take notes on the planting dates so you know next year. See if you notice any difference. Its a great experiment. Planted both here in Michigan, mid September. My hard neck is fine, nothing popping up. My soft neck is already popping up, and very concerned... warmer weather in fall caused this. No frost yet. I plan to cover the bed with straw when it gets colder. So, have or will I lose my soft neck garlic now that it is growing? Or will it go dormant until spring once cold weather takes hold?

Thank you for the video. How many hours of sun does garlic need? I currently only have available space on a raised bed that gets only 1-2hours of direct sun at most, the rest of the day is indirect or part shaded only. Also, does garlic do well in grow bags? I can get more hours of direct sun with the grow bags. Thank you!
I does well in bags and containers. I would try some in that for sure, where you get more sun. Most plants do best with 6 hours of direct sun. Garlic might be a little more forgiving. I would plant a few in the shady area. Thats is the only way to know. I suspect you will get green growth, which you can eat, but have little bulb development. I want to plant my garlic but have menacing monster squirrel digging deep holes in beds which he doesn't fill in. He gives me the side eye stares me down while whipping his tail around challenging me. His tail is bent & scraggly & he's absolutely HUGE I'm a little afraid of him & I'm pretty sure he knows it. I'm normally a squirrel fan but not of this one lol! I'll have to cover my soil with chicken wire or something as you suggested in your other video. I don't want this squirrel to dig up where I will be planting my fall garlic, 6 heads of a German hard neck variety.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Gulp! I was afraid of that and had been thinking the exact same thing myself. We do own a couple 'have a heart traps'. I'll probably wind up relocating him earlier next year to a nature preserve a few miles away if I have the same squirrel problem in 2022. The reason I hesitate to move him now at this time is because this homely, scruffy guy has been working so hard for a while now to prepare for winter & I don't know if he would have enough time to catch himself up in a new location. If I moved him 🐿now I'd feel guilty & I would picture him starving all winter, Yup, I'm a push over when it comes to animals lol.

I'm wondering if we're supposed to mulch on top of all that once we've planted the bulbs. I'm in Southeastern Pennsylvania

AAS is always fun.

Couldn't find garlic bulbs at garden centers... I talked to a person who said grocery store garlic is used sometimes, just not from California ??
I use it. But there are soft neck and hard neck. California garlic is soft neck. It can be grown but I like the hard necks for fall planting.

I planted soft neck garlic in fall and now they're about 12-15inch tall and lower leaves are brown. Not sure what to do. Wait until late spring or harvest or pull one out. I only planted 25.plants.
They won't have bulbs. Just let them go. You can also plant more cloves as a back up.

Sometimes green comes up but when it gets cold they stop growing and pick up again in the spring

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you. Hoping for the best, I planted a lot!
I suspect you will get green growth, which you can eat, but have little bulb development.

thank you!
Isn't it rather early to be planting garlic in Maryland zone 7? Average expected first frost is late October, and I was told to plant 1-2 weeks after that date. Thanks for the video.
A bit. But I do make some videos early as to give people time to plan, buy and plant. These will get more green growth now than I want but otherwise will be fine.

Do you have to water it when it is planted and during the spring?
Early on not so much but yes as the soil is drying up.

I’m in zone 10B (San Francisco, Ca) by the coast. Should I / can I lay down mulch as well? Great video! Thank you Gary!!!
Garlic is a bit different there in that soft neck does well when planted in the spring. I don't think you need mulch unless it is to manage moisture.

Kevin at the The Epic Gardening channel has an amazing 2 parts video where he shows the complete guide to garlic in your zone. He is in California zone 10 as well.
Are you growing a store bought garlic or where do you purchase your garlic bulbs
Some for the store. Otherwise I just look on line.

Can I use garlic and onion from the grocery store with success?
Not onions as they already formed bulbs but you can use garlic from stores as I have done that

I'm in Mi. zone 6b and won't be planting my garlic until late October. Why are you planting now?
Sometimes I plant early to get the video out to people early enough for them to plan.

Is bone meal good for radishes and carrots ?
It is good. Certainly won't hurt and not many plants complains of extra phosphorous.

You have to trap and release squirrels. They are a pain

If I moved him 🐿now I'd feel guilty & I would picture him starving all winter, Yup, I'm a push over when it comes to animals lol.
wait, what's the next step ... watering , fertilizing as the months proceed... it's my first time with garlic I am clueless!!!
Nothing ,unless you have an extremely dry fall ,and winter, if you do, water weekly, otherwise no additional care is necessary
This is it. You can give it a drink of fish emulsion in the spring but you set it up and now you wait for harvesting.
