  • Like many traditional songs, the authorship of "The House of the Rising Sun" is uncertain.
No one knows for sure what House of the Rising Sun really is. There are two very popular theories:
"The House" was a brothel in New Orleans, named in honor of a certain Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (whose name in French means "Rising Sun") and which operated from 1862 to 1874 when it was closed due to complaints from its neighbors. It was located at 826-830 St. Louis Street.
It was the name of the women's prison in Orleans Parish, which had the rising sun painted on its gate. This explains the "ball and chain" verse.
The earliest recording of the song was made by Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster under the name "Rising Sun Blues" on Vocalion Records on September 6, 1933. Clarence Ashley said he learned the song from his grandfather Enoch.
This version made by Disturbed, in my opinion, made it much better. Congratulations and thank you.
