    What happens when a college student decides 3/4 through school, they want to change careers ? What if they go to school , graduates after spending 60k of taxpayers money; then decides to not use their degree ? What about the 10’s of thousands of students that drop out because they can’t handle the work ? As a taxpayer, I’m not willing to pay for other people’s failures.

    • @vyper900

      There would have to be a contingency plan for the government. If this were to be implemented, they would have to make strict "payback" rules that would make those that don't succeed or choose to be wishy washy pay for it.

    • @koalanefelibato4365
      @koalanefelibato4365 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      But if it's free more people get the chance of graduating and becoming productive citizens, thus paying more in taxes over their life than what they took as students. If someone can succeed in college now, they will also succeed if it's free. If you add to that the number of people that could succeed, but lack the resources, it's obvious that free public colleges could only increase the number of college graduates. There will he more social mobility and the middle class would grow, which is good for everyone. In short, you're just selfish

    • @vyper900
      @vyper900 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@koalanefelibato4365 I think you are right. It's a matter of investing in our future. Even if it did devalue a degree, a country powered by slightly less than college educated students is better than a country of highschool student, and a handful of college educated students. I think trade schools should be part of the equation too.

    • @koalanefelibato4365
      @koalanefelibato4365 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vyper900 Yup, but I also don't think that college degrees would lose value. As automation rises, ownership of a college degree will only become more necessary in order to find a job. So it doesn't just increase social mobility; free public education could also prevent an employment crisis.

      Also consider that random economic transactions over time tend to accumulate in the hands of the few (this is what the game Monopoly was created to show). Progressive tax systems are a necessary part of keeping a stable system. Without this system, it would have been impossible for individuals to accrue even 10% of this wealth.

      If I earn 50k a year however, and I live a slightly more lavish lifestyle and a spend 25k on needs and still pay a 10% tax of 5k a year, I still have 20k in disposable income. This means the government only took 20% of my disposable income.
      High levels of wealth also lower the propensity to spend and reduce the monetary velocity and lower growth. As people on lower income spend a much higher proportion of their income, when the government gives out benefits to an area, it is essentially increasing sales for basic industries in the area. And then there's the fact that just because you want to have a certain profession, it doesn't mean positions are available. And, again, if there is one job opening but a thousand candidates, the business can low-ball on salary knowing at least one of those thousand will accept less than the going rate just to have a job. B) the money has to come from somewhere so if the government is paying for it they're going to cut cost wherever they can (never upgrade the computer lab, cut labor that keeps the campus up ect.)
      C) class attendance would go down cause a lot of folks (especially fresh out of HS kids) wouldn't take it serious.

      I'm from the Netherlands, here the collegesbare significantly cheaper (somewhere between 1040 to 3000 euroes a year which would be around 1500 to 4000 dollars a year) and you right about the class attendance especially in the first year a lot of people(kids of we're being honest) who are fresh out high school don't take it serious and almost 20% of the people who attent go and change to a different major or drop out of school in the first two months. Also a side effect is that school take in more students than they have to/than there are job opportunity for sometimes just for the money.

    In 1980 the annual cost of tuition (average) was $9,438.00. using only a widely accepted and moderate, basic, average inflation increase of 2.24% annually compounded multiplied for 40 years, yields an average annual tuition of $22,893.57 in 2020... But the actual average cost of tuition per year in 2020 is $23,872 which is $978.43 over the average basic inflation rate (which isn't very much, really), and this is with a massive increase in population.
    Now, let's compare minium wages using the same inflation formula of 2.24% over the same period of 40 years, calculated annually. In 1980 the federal minimum wage was $3.10/hr, using the formula this becomes $7.28/hr which is exactly what the federal minimum wage is today in 2020, it is $7.28/hr... But that's the absolute minimum federally, most states have higher minimum wages than this, some are even more than DOUBLE the federal minimum wage and less than half the states (21) use the federal minimum wage as standard...
    So when we look at the tuition costs, yeah, they're higher in 2020 than in 1980 but relatively speaking, it's not even a thousand dollars more than it used to be -and people on average make a lot more money now than they did 40 years ago (again, relatively speaking).
    Keep in mind all of these calculations do NOT include bursaries, scholarships or other financial aide widely available to students -which can significantly reduce the costs of tuition well below inflation or in many circumstances, outright pay for a "full ride"(no tuition charge) for students... Unfortunately, most students do not apply for financial aide and if that's the case, that's your own fault for not even attempting to help yourself.
    So my questions are this:
    Is there actually a problem here?
    And why should someone else pay for your post secondary education? As an adult, you make your own choices and compete for yourself. The best educations should go to the best and brightest students, those who are willing to put in the work, to pay for themselves and succeed.
    Furthermore, being that the costs of tuition have risen over inflation by not even $1,000, another good question is: what have the costs of operation for post secondary education institutions risen by? What grants, what policies, what financial incentives and financial aide and tax exemptions from governments do these establishments recieve and what donations do these establishments recieve? We certainly do not have the full story.
    My guess is that we actually have things better and easier for students today than we ever have had before. We just don't know it.
    Edit: The increase of tuition over inflation in forty years from 1980 to 2020 is 0.9580102105% overall, NOT compounded. This yields an average increase to the average tuition costs of 0.0239502553% per year over inflation (for calculations, I'm just going to use 0.0239503%)... So let's put this in terms that even Will Witt's interviewees can understand: this year your tuition will cost you $23,872 which is less than 1% over inflation over forty years. And next year, your tuition will increase over inflation(which again, inflation is fair) by $5.72(the cost of a latte) from 2020 year to 2021.
    Your cost is (23,872+2.24%)+(a latte)=$24,412.45. it increases by $540.45 that year -or $45.03 a month.
    Skip that latte and you're on 2020's budget, because afterall -minimum wages increase on average with inflation and most states actually have a much higher minimum wage than the federal standard. You can also take a part time job which pays more than minimum wage, you know. It's your choice.
    If we do not at last apply a moderate increase to tuition fees which matches inflation, the schools lose money and will not be able to function. Duh.
    Also, don't forget that post secondary graduates not only have a much, much lower rate of unemployment than high school graduates, they earn on the low end, $17,500 more per year than high school graduates... And their wages increase at a minimum with inflation and usually also have benefits in addition to these much higher wages.
    Take the loan. Apply for bursaries, apply for scholarships, get a part time job and spend as little as possible while you're in school. Take classes which will benefit your goals, work hard and work smart so you actually learn something useful.

    I am from Slovakia. We have free universities. Now, how do you fund a university? The first attempt our government did, was to fund unis based on how many students they allow in the first semester. This created a situation, where unis accepted everyone, banked on the headcount and then filtered most of the students after 1st semster. It didn't work. So the gov decided, they will instead fund unis based on how many students actually graduate, and this was even worse, because the unis became incentivised to let everyone get a degree, because they got $$$ for passing students...

    If you aren’t decided on what career you want to pursue, but still want some level of post-high school education, then attend a smaller, community college.
    It’s WAY cheaper and gives you time to decide what career you want to pursue without spending an enormous amount of money for the same general-Ed classes you will be taking for your first 1-2 years at a larger university.
