A mixed blessing. Losing it only made it more of a fan favorite. gAlthough we’ll never know how it was meant to sound in 1980, Donald sang it in live concerts in the early 2000s. I wish Fagen and Becker had revived it on their Live in America album.
Fun fact: going back in time to save that Steely Dan recording was actually the first successful use of a time machine. But then someone when back in time and changed that mission to "have the Astros win the World Series".
Yep... Btw.. there's actually a live Dan recording of this floating about on TH-cam.. from somewhere about mid 90s. As far as I know, it was a once-only deal.
Between this masterpiece, his version of Maxine and the live concert of The Nightfly. Scott seems like the right guy to keep Steely Dan music alive when Donald retires.
The most beautiful and sad/terrible thing, at the same time, is as if they had actually put it on the album directly: not only does this version sound very good, as if we lived in an alternative universe where this WAS NEVER DELETED BY ACCIDENT, but The lyrics haven't aged a bit and in fact hit the nail on the head with the SAME problem as always. We easily forget that the music sounds great but the lyrics to it are depressing as hell. It aged well because it never aged: couple relationships, be they dating, married or even parents, in which their love life falls apart or falls apart or they even get divorced, and many ask to start from scratch as the music says. It is timeless music, as if it were thrown at you yesterday and it hits like a truck because it is an almost cyclical reality of humanity.
Wow!!! Mr Schnalien himself in the control room! Divine groove! The drummer has that great Jeff Porcaro (RIP) thing going. Great work all of you guys! Hope Mr. Fagen doesn't take it off youtube (please Mr. Fagen, don't).
As sad as it is to have lost the original mix, the online effort and collaboration that has happened in its absence is seriously inspiring and beautiful. That's what music is all about, amazing work guys. Hope Fagen sees these renditions someday.
I'm in awe gentleman, this is by far the best SD cover I've ever heard. To execute it at this level requires the degree of intense fanaticism and respect for the genius all of you obviously possess. Just brilliant, you put a smile on my face today. Total pros, one and all. Thank you for this gift.
Really, REALLY nice. The horn arrangement is very tasty and in line with how I imagine Don & Walt would would chart it. And of course the great Michael Omartian, who put his indelible stamp on Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic.
Great job getting the chords and harmonies correct, from a less than clear source. Really well done! The horns arrangement and mixing sounds fantastic!
The Graydon-ish coda was a nice surprise. Also, it never occurred to me how much horns were missed on the original version. Great job to everyone involved.
This sounds so great! The band here is fantastic - NAILED the classic SD sound. Amazing. I particularly loved the voice of the vocalist on the first verse. He captured the Fagenisms so well! Love it. Great job, guys!
Very nice job! Definitely has the unique Steely Dan sound dialed in. Josh Turner Guitar (& friends) also released a version of this one a day or two ago. It's definitely worth checking out.
Josh Turner & Friends version is good, but this one by the International Dan Collective has the edge in my book. Just a tad slower, a better fit to "the swing" in the piece. Vocals and horns also superior.
Excellent!! so glad to hear someone breathe new life into this lost song. And even have an SD alumnus Michael Omartian with you - how could you go wrong?
Absolutely fantastic! I am so happy multiple covers of this song came out to give us a fresh version of what would've been a killer track had it ever been finished - and this version currently sits at the top of my list!
Excellent! And mixed by Bill Schnee to boot! (Just read his excellent book, you should too.) I hope you can find a way to make the full lossless file available for purchase.
Wow! After listening to second generation cassette copies and the DAT backup disc. It is such a pleasure to hear the song played with brilliant musicians. The vocals are stellar as well. A fantastic performance. Maybe donald could fly it again in forthcoming concerts. His band are even more capable. Cheers
I love how I heard this for 1:28 then realized there was an upbeat guitar playing all the time :D That's just 100% real Steely Dan feeling. Great job gents!
been listening to this for a while now, you guys all really nailed it, this is incredible. Special praise to the guitar player, perfect tone 2:40. Incredible mix/mastering, really cool how you nailed the rhodes/phaser kind of thing in the background. Great job to all!!!
Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!!!! Finally, we can listen to this great, laid back tune WITHOUT having to accept the original studio rough mix's (to me) absolutely intolerable wow and flutter from the world's crappiest cassette! Hearing how abysmal that original cassette sounded, I often wondered if it were a cassette copy of a cassette copy? I just cannot image ANY studio of that era producing a "client walks out the door with" after session, rough mix copy that sounded as baaaaad as that cassette did. Now... We have been blessed by Scott. What a fine performance as well. Please do record more. I really enjoy hearing competent covers!
Thank you soooo much for bringing this to life!! I heard the original cassette only a few weeks ago and heard the 'possibility' in my head. You have done Don and Walter proud with this recording!! Fucking amazing!! Yeah... It should have been on Gaucho. Thank you x 💯
What a cast of characters! Great job guys. Nice to see Jerry on the band. I've been following him for years with the FCH. Excellent performance by all!
Wow!!! What a great tribute to this unique lost treasure of an musical arrangement! A second arrangement, no less ... Excellent job, guys! So much talent on display, and even the videography is splendid! God what a great song on every level!
th-cam.com/video/weQsCjsDyxQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Gyg2OChXcZc51Ye5 is the one time Steely Dan played it live. If you look at Donald’s lips, I’m pretty sure he says “the rules.” Even on the old cassette you can hear the word “the”. “Rules” seems like the only logical word to come next, since he’s talking about breaking the rules and having an affair.
I would love to see this "collective" hit the road performing this and the rest of Gaucho. What a fantastic sound! I saw "Steely Dan" last week (Donald and his band) opening for The Eagles and, while he is definitely still a great live performer, you could kinda tell that he has pretty much checked out and he has basically become one of the characters that he would mock in his 1970s songs. Just going through the motions, playing the hits for a bunch of rich old white people, the stage banter dripping with insincerity. It would be lovely to see this music performed by musicians who actually do it for the love of the music.
You guys certainly know the magic. I’ve listened to the Dan since 1972. Just like a magnet to perfection I was hooked from the first second I heard them. Truly brilliant masters. You guys are up there with them……. Yehhhh ya not the lads but you stand along side them. Beautiful work. Thank you for keeping our dreams alive🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👌👌👌👌💯💯💯💯💯👌👌
Absolutely love this fantastic work just wished room for a fantastic, and long, guitar solo had been made as the lead was so nice . Also, singer two with the beard, reminded me (in a deranged way ) of Walter off Breaking Bad, I am crying with laughter of the Dan-ness of the idea , that Walter did not die at all, but lives on , in a top drawer SD tribute collective
It's always 'go back in time to kill Hitler', never 'prevent the assistant from losing "The Second Arrangement"'.
Luv it! 😂
A mixed blessing. Losing it only made it more of a fan favorite. gAlthough we’ll never know how it was meant to sound in 1980, Donald sang it in live concerts in the early 2000s. I wish Fagen and Becker had revived it on their Live in America album.

No matter how many likes this comment gets, it will never be enough.
Lol
Anyone listening in 2024? Friggin marvelous!!!
Yep... Btw.. there's actually a live Dan recording of this floating about on TH-cam.. from somewhere about mid 90s. As far as I know, it was a once-only deal.
Utter brilliance from guys who know the score. And Omartian on keys!
Perfection! Don't erase it!!
Hahaha. It’s on the cloud now bro.
😂
@@TNKeysstuck in a cloud! Its raining Dan...i love it! ❤
Best reply ever.
Wonderful tribute to Steely Dan, my favourite group.
Michael Omartian, Bill Schnee etc.. all pro players. How can you lose? Sounds wonderful.
Petition to make Scott an honorary member of Steely Dan
Between this masterpiece, his version of Maxine and the live concert of The Nightfly. Scott seems like the right guy to keep Steely Dan music alive when Donald retires.
My signature!
How many times does a guy have to replay a song before you get banned off TH-cam for playing the same song too often.?
I feel like I'm hearing a new SD song for the first time in over 40 years. Awesome!
You bet!
This is so awesome good love it, beautiful voice , thank you , love SD ❤🍀🥰
Those horns are just DIVINE!!!
ABSOLUTELY LUSCIOUS!!!!!
Mr. Omartian's piano just screams Steely Dan. Put it on vinyl, and just TAKE. MY. MONEY.👏🏾
Haha. If only Donald would give us a first use license…
You guys hit a grand slam! I think Donald and Walter would be proud.
Wow!!!
Mr Schnalien himself in the control room!
Divine groove! The drummer has that great Jeff Porcaro (RIP) thing going.
Great work all of you guys!
Hope Mr. Fagen doesn't take it off youtube (please Mr. Fagen, don't).
This is what the internet was made for - outstanding.
Best Steely Dan cover of all time
This is out of this world! A truly great song brought back by an incredible group of musicians and organizers! Thanks a million for this!
Those horns are sexy af and fit in exquisitely with the song. Bravo lads, this is a brilliant session and you knocked it out of the park.
Rolls Royce music and performance, we want more ....please give us "The Third Arrangement" 🙂
Absolutely brilliant. You’ve all brought the lost track to life. Amazing job. Thank you for making the effort 👍
As sad as it is to have lost the original mix, the online effort and collaboration that has happened in its absence is seriously inspiring and beautiful. That's what music is all about, amazing work guys. Hope Fagen sees these renditions someday.
Not sure he’s seen it, but he’s definitely heard it.
Michael Omartian is my hero.
I'm in awe gentleman, this is by far the best SD cover I've ever heard. To execute it at this level requires the degree of intense fanaticism and respect for the genius all of you obviously possess. Just brilliant, you put a smile on my face today. Total pros, one and all. Thank you for this gift.
I'm not sure if words can describe how awesome this is. I can easily hear this at the end of Gaucho.
Really, REALLY nice. The horn arrangement is very tasty and in line with how I imagine Don & Walt would would chart it. And of course the great Michael Omartian, who put his indelible stamp on Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic.
Wonderful, you guys absolutely nailed the Steely Dan sound. Wish I could add this to my Steely Dan Gaucho album. Well done, guys.
As an musician I can tell; THIS IS PARADISE. Steely Dan Forever.
Simply superb and what a pleasure it was to see Michael Omartian play on piano who was a significant arranger and played on SD and Donald’s Albums.
I keep playing this all over again. Super musicians and great arrangements and production. Love this rendition.😀
THAT is some serious playing. The mix is so so so good. Great job!
Mr Omartian is brilliant talking to Rick
This sounds so great! The band here is fantastic - NAILED the classic SD sound. Amazing. I particularly loved the voice of the vocalist on the first verse. He captured the Fagenisms so well! Love it. Great job, guys!
the horns section is out of this world
Fantastic! This sounds every bit as good as I imagined the studio version could have sounded! Great job guys!
Ole should definitely become an honorary life Dan member. He is extraordinary, SO underrated! Bravo everyone!
The Norwegian Ole has strong yet crisp high voice. In harmony the three vocalists sounded so rich.
Fantastic! Think I have watched this 20 times already!
Me too ❤
It was refreshing to hear and watch another arrangement of The Second Arrangement.
Love it! Anytime Ole Borud is involved, I'm all in!
Yeah, but then you consider what JTG & friends were working with, vs. this group, and it's very impressive. Very.
Thx for the heads-up. Turner's version is outstanding.
@@bayouflier6641 Sure thing. Josh & his collaborators never disappoint, and never fail to impress (me, anyway).
Compared to the international Dan Collective Josh Turner and friends look like amateur newbies. I don’t know why they rate a mention here.
The guitar tone is just spectacularly good on this. Lifts the whole thing.
Fabulous song...excellent Musicians...great arrangement...what a combination. It really lifted me. Thank you guys...one and all.
Oh my god. This is so great, made me cry. GOOD LORD!!
So, I am not the only one.
Oh my god you brought this to life. The boys would be so proud of you. Thank you!
Excellent!! so glad to hear someone breathe new life into this lost song. And even have an SD alumnus Michael Omartian with you - how could you go wrong?
Just like listening to Steely Dan on the radio in high school. Thanks for adding to their world, and mine.
I think I'm officially obsessed. Great job, everyone.
Pretty amazing fellas.
Thank you so bloody much !!!!!! I want to cry . I’m so happy 😀 !
Thanks for making a pro version in hq of a lost fuzzy tape capturing steely Dan in their prime.
Magic indeed.
Absolutely fantastic! I am so happy multiple covers of this song came out to give us a fresh version of what would've been a killer track had it ever been finished - and this version currently sits at the top of my list!
0h YeeeeeYah!!:)* Great Post 📫, Scott Sheriff!! 😀~*
Brilliant! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!

WOW! That is just brilliant - thanks for bringing The Second Arrangement to life again
Absokutely the best rendition! So far
the chords, the phrasing, the vocal harmonies. It's that good old 'Dan Magic'.
Wow! After listening to second generation cassette copies and the DAT backup disc. It is such a pleasure to hear the song played with brilliant musicians. The vocals are stellar as well. A fantastic performance. Maybe donald could fly it again in forthcoming concerts. His band are even more capable. Cheers
This is incredible! Brilliant!
I love how I heard this for 1:28 then realized there was an upbeat guitar playing all the time :D

Great job gents!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brilliant, absolutely Brilliant!
I love Steely Dan and I LOVE what you all just did. Thank you for being!
Just perfect!
The musicianship on display is phenomenal!!❤❤
Lost for words really, different class comes to mind. Thanks
good to see that Josh Weissman has branched out from recipe videos to providing backing vocals
Lost a bunch of his hair too.
Now I see how great this track could have been. Much respect. 👍
Hopefully there would more content from the International Dan Collective. Love it a lot
WOW !! a superb performance of a great Dan track - Well done boys

Wow, just wow. So freaking good! Great arrangement of the Second Arrangement
WONDERFUL GENTLEMEN!!... Is it not "WHO steps out with no regrets..."?
Not sure.

Absolutely *first class!* Brilliant production all round! 😎👌
Hey, I used to see some of those guys doing Dan covers around Nashville, especially at 3rd and Lindsley. They did Chicago tunes perfect as well.
You guys certainly know the magic. I’ve listened to the Dan since 1972. Just like a magnet to perfection I was hooked from the first second I heard them. Truly brilliant masters. This made my day!! Sheer brilliance from a bunch of my Nashville music heroes and Bill’s brilliance at the board!
Almost outrageously great - everyone concerned - in every department. More please!
Just Amazing! and so loved! Thank ALL of You!
Absolutely love this fantastic work just wished room for a fantastic, and long, guitar solo had been made as the lead was so nice . The first singer or the third one? The second singer was the only one WITHOUT a beard.
That's beautiful and so Steely Dan! Very nice.
Fantastic. Really hits those Steely grooves
Fantastic. Just love it.
Simply fabulous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you all for bringing life to this incredible tune. I will watch this again and again…simply amazing! Thank you
I just can't stop listening to this!
OUTSTANDING!
Incredible! Can't imagine it being done better. Please do The Bear and sell us recordings!
I can't stop listening to this...
