Great bike apart from its looks. The least attractive of all the bikes using this engine, including the Niken. Better panniers than the last model. Ditto the Niken. Great idea having the exhaust out of the way under the bike. Buell did that first. I have an old Ulysses, and the exhaust is a jacking point. I've come round to quite liking the Tracer's dash, and I hated it at first, so maybe the bike's looks will grow on me. Good review, Tony.
This Yamaha looks good. The sports/tourer market faded over the years in favor of adventure bike segment. I'm old enough to recall what I think us the grand daddy of Sports/tourers and that's the late 70's BMW R100RS. A "Gentlemens" highish speed grand tourer. Glad to see the resurgence of this category. The modern motor if this Yamaha surely fits the bill. The dash however,,,well,,,could use some help. 😊 But being a fan of this genre I'm happy to see this bike succeed.
I own the base model and I see it as a great value for the money. The best part is the CP3 by the way. This one in black and gold it is just a very good looking machine. In this particular color combo it is not just very good-looking, but also elegant in my opinion. Got my like. Great video bro. Take care.

Love it. Especially in white. Perhaps the bike a lot of GS owners would be happier on, if they don't go off road? Might have missed you saying usb port? And what's the maximum load permitted? Some Yamahas won't allow top box, and panniers, if you carry a passenger. Quite important on a sports tourer, I think. But yes, great bike. ( Tenere 900, anyone?) Safe, happy travels 👍
As someone who moved from a Tracer to a GS after six month ownership I can safely say I won’t be going back & the GS won’t be heading off road intentionally, I considered the RS but the GS just suited better two up. Unless Yamaha come up with a new two up tour option with shaft drive my Yamaha days are over but I guess we’ll all be on belts n batteries before long.

Great review, probably watched 30 of them so far, I'm considering a left over 2022 (they never released a 2023 in Canada), there are some dealers that have them for $13,999 CAD, which seems like a great price for the kit you get (MSRP here was $18,099). My only real worries are the dash, screen and seat comfort...you seems to get along well with seat and screen. Dash I worry less about, although already seems dated for a 2022/2023. Too bad they didn't release a firmware update to get more functionality on the right, but suspect they don;t want to spend another penny on that dash.
Must say I've overlooked this bike so far. Seems like it could be a good challenger for the Z1000SX I currently ride. I should give it a try. Switching between the two back to back might be interesting 🤔
I’ve owned a 2015 & 2017 Z1000sx and now have the Tracer 9GT, for me the Tracer is a lot better bike. It’s well worth trying one, at first the seat feels strange the way it’s canted forwards but you can buy a kit that lifts the front of the seat to make it flatter. The engine is a lot more fun, and the comfort for rider and passenger is much better than the SX.

Good, informative review and I like the caveat that you're not a long-term owner so recognising that there may be other elements you haven't covered. For me, having sat on one, it's the dual-screen that I'm pretty sure I'd find annoying to the point that it's made me consider the Tracer 9GT+ or another bike altogether. After so much criticism of it, I can't understand why Yamaha didn't read the room and adopt the GT+'s version. Unless they had heaps of them sat on a shelf somewhere....
The bikes with the split display have only been in build for a couple of years so it would be pointless modifying the electronics to suit the other display at this point, it’s not something that owners complain about, I like how you can have your own choice of info in large digits on the right, and you notice that in normal use ( rather than on test ride ) you are only glancing at the screen occasionally, in fact the only thing I would change about the display would be to add a fuel range meter, that’s it ( it does have a display for fuel used though, and tells you how many miles you have ridden since the fuel light came on )
Wanted a Tracer Gt for a long time, finally a local dealer had got a 22 model in and got to check out. I was really disappointed in the seating position as well. Felt really cramped compared to my Africa Twin AS. My feet were tucked up under me like a sport bike ride more than a sport tourer. Glad I got the Africa Twin even more now, but I'm tall 6'2" a shorter rider might not feel that way though.
I bought one of these new 11 months ago. 5,500 miles later I can say it's a great all round bike. I've done two UK tours and ridden in all weathers. At 1.82m tall I (and many other owners) find the stock screen ruubish. Apart from that my only other issue is that I've ridden it through the winter and despite using ACF50 the finish is pretty poor in places. My five year old Triumph Street Triple looked so much better than this bike does after just one winter. I currently have a claim under the warranty with Yamaha. Unacceptable for a bike costing this much money.

@@fabriciovilela77 it is true that for casually fast tarmac driving, 19" or even 21" is ok if you get used to it, and then in dirt it is much more enjoyable.
It's a great looking bike, particularly in that colour scheme. The dash is a bit odd but if everything in life was the same, life would be boringly beige.
Hi mate, if you compare this bike to the Tiger 900 Rally Pro you rode 3 months ago, which one you prefer at touring, and why? Cheers from The Netherlands.
Hi Fred, good question and a tough one, I would probably pick the Tracer for purely road work, it’s more fun to ride (fast) is just as comfortable and is more manageable. If there is dirt involved, definitely the Tiger.
I don't know how the pricing is in the UK but from what I've seen they have been vastly different. I.E. KTM 690 is 9k over in the UK and 13K in the states. The Tracer 9 is 15k here whereas the MT09 is 9 grand. MT10 is also 15k where it used to be cheaper though I can't remember what it was. I feel that is overpriced but I love the bike and would prefer the fairing and windscreen over the MT09 but 15k is a hard pill to swallow for some tech idc care about.
Has a tracer gt for about a year i found the gearbox notchy build quality was so so hated the dash chopped it in for a 900 tiger ,the tiger beats it hands down for comfort ,handling performance about the same but the tiger feels more torquey , good honest review keep up the good work .
Maybe the King can suggest smaller license plates for the UK? 😂 or….put them on the front and eliminate wind screens 😂 Lovely bike. Yamaha should be proud.
@@mancavemoto I know a lot of people are not always keen on the Bridgestone and prefer the Michelin tyres , I have gone back to the Bridgestone because of punctures in the other brands , never had a puncture with a Bridgestone 👍
IF the tourer does not have a shaft drive then it cannot be the best or the perfect tourer. Chain maintenance will always be a pain in the bum. Actually, I'm not even sure if it is that good if you are a commuter and do not have a garage. Doing any maintenance, even dealing with chain is a paaain without a garage, especially if you live in a wet country, like in the UK or Netherlands. Just get a cheap FJR1300, you can lane filter with it with ease. I know, I'm doing it for 2 years now. Or get a Super Tenere. I've had that too for 2 years. Just get a newer Super Ten, 2nd Gen came out in 2013 with a better gearbox which holds the discs without bloody springs that causes annoying vibrations around 3000 RPM. The fix is to get a second gen basket that holds the discs. The upgrade would cost you about $1500. This info is from 2020.
I have put 15,000 Km on mine and while I generally agree with your assessment, I would not describe the ride quality as "plush". To me a plush ride quality comes with an R1250GS or a Tiger 1200 GT Pro, and the Tracer is not in this league.
Given the consistent derision aimed at the Muppet-faced instrument cluster, why would Yamaha keep it on the GT but wisely toss it for the + model? Aesthetically, I dislike the ubiquitous TFT tablet displays but, egad, I certainly don’t want Gonzo the Great staring at me either. And, even if it didn’t freak me out too much, it certainly impacts its residual value and selling it to others who may not be so tolerant.
@@mancavemoto My sincere apologies for my misjudgement based on misinformation from Toad on a Visordown launch video. You'd expect that being treated to a trip abroad to ride both the new Niken and 900 Tracer models, they'd at least get their facts right. I had one for two months. It’s a dreadful bike. It doesn’t know what it wants to be. To uncomfortable for a tourer, the seat is a ridiculously bad design and good luck correcting it. I tried and laid hundreds to no avail at all. It’s not that fast either so not really a sports bike. I really don’t get this bike at all.
9:22 "Cornering lights". I just don't get the point of these, on cars, or bikes. In 40 years of riding all sorts of bikes, I have NEVER been in a situation where I thought "Hmm...what I could really do with here, is some sort of light that comes on, when I go to turn!". And I can honestly say I've never encountered any circumstances (whether driving, or riding), where a "cornering light" would have improved safety. I'd love to see some sort of statistics that show how many accidents would have been prevented, if cornering lights had been in use. They are just yet another silly gimmick, to sell bikes to mugs who don't know any better.
Have you never ridden down a dark country road at night? Turning into a bend where your headlight keeps pointing forward, the cornering light illuminates in the inside of the bend thus showing any potential hazards that might otherwise be unseen. Seems a pretty decent safety feature to me. Here’s an example at 19:00 from an Africa Twin video th-cam.com/video/lTo1NmTvWEs/w-d-xo.html

Only the tracer plus gets the big tft in the 2023 model year
@@mancavemoto Gotcha, my bad!
What do you think about the suspension? Isnt it too stiff for the bumpy roads?
I thought it was good, theres a nice balance between handling and comfort, plus you've got adjustment with the semi-active set up
How does it ride compared to the FJR1300?
Fantastic bike, very high bang for the buck .
Thnx for the review
Tracer 900 or bmw Xr 900 or Multistrada 900 or triumph tiger 900???
Or tiger 660 sport for someone who’s 61 and back to biking with 5k miles under his belt ???
Hmmm, tricky, but I do have a soft spot for the Multistrada V2 - th-cam.com/video/8bYLtbNXTCk/w-d-xo.html I prefer this triple to the Triumph one as well
Sold my tracer900gt 5 months ago for financial reasons and it just has a few things that turned me off.
I work at a Yamaha dealer in tokyo so I work on and ride lots of the new tracers and.... I hope I can afford the Tracer 9GT Plus coming this fall because i cnat even think of 1 thing not to like about that bike. (Japan always gets yamahas last so maybe it comes next year like north America)
Yamaha should put a 19” front wheel on this bike. Spoked wheels.
An adventure version 😍. If it happens, so bye tiger 900 Rally Pro.
What do you need the 19 for? Wouldn't a knobby tyre like Scorpion Rally do the job in 99% of cases?
@@fabriciovilela77 if dirt was my thing, i wouldn't buy a big bike anyway.
@@fabriciovilela77 it is true that for casually fast tarmac driving, 19" or even 21" is ok if you get used to it, and then in dirt it is much more enjoyable.
I’ll take the split screen for $11999 which is what new ones are going for now in the US.
The tracer9 gt+ has an excellent big TFT screen just like the one on the new TMAX such a shame that you need to upgrade to the gt+ just to get it...
I reckon that will be on all the tracers next year
Yamaha....Please make a Tracer 10 GT.
What’s the drone your using for overhead views looks excellent footage 👍🏼
It’s an Insta360 X3 on a extendable pole!
Sorry I meant flying over the fields in the opening scenes
Oh, in the sting? That’s not my footage it’s from SW-Motech 👍
Heated seats ? Aka tiger 900 GTP?
There is a heated seat option, but its a £422 accessory
Hi mate, which quickshifter you prefer (at low/medium revs), the Tracer 9 GT or the Tiger 900? Cheers.
Tracer…
Whats the difference between
9Gt 2023 &
9Gt 2024 ?
As far as I’m aware there is no difference, the 2023 model just rolls into 2024. Unless Yamaha are about to launch an updated 2024 model?
Not a fan of the backwards shots, takes me out of the moment. I just want to see the road ahead. Other than that, great review!
It's a great looking bike, particularly in that colour scheme. The dash is a bit odd but if everything in life was the same, life would be boringly beige.
I think 21+ liters would be more adequate for this bike. If you ride it fast i don't think you can get much more than 200km range, do you?
That would be about your limit if riding it 'vigorously'
Hi mate, if you compare this bike to the Tiger 900 Rally Pro you rode 3 months ago, which one you prefer at touring, and why? Cheers from The Netherlands.
Hi Fred, good question and a tough one, I would probably pick the Tracer for purely road work, it’s more fun to ride (fast) is just as comfortable and is more manageable. If there is dirt involved, definitely the Tiger.
@@mancavemoto Thanks for your answer. And which quickshifter you prefer?
The Yamaha’s
I thought the new one has a TFT display, not the one which is looking at you with the Kissinger's nose :).
Only the GT Plus currently has the new TFT display
I thought the 2023 had a new 7 inch display?
Only on the GT plus, the standard and GT retain the split dadh
I thought the 23 tracer 9 gt has the new dash?
Only the GT plus
This doesn’t seem like the one MCN reviewed recently ? That one had a new TFT dash…..
Yep that’s the new Tracer 9 GT +, they’ve just held the launch event in Sardinia
+ radar guided cruise control & third generation quick shifter.
Isn’t this the older model? I think the new(est) one has different instruments.
Nope, the big tft is currently only available on the GT plus model for 2023
@@mancavemoto that's a shame.
Complies with Euro 5 plus? Or Euro 6 already? Of course yes to Euro 5.
Its Euro 5 compliant
Maybe the King can suggest smaller license plates for the UK? 😂 or….put them on the front and eliminate wind screens 😂
Lovely bike. Yamaha should be proud.
That would be good 😂
This or the tiger 900 GT PRO?
A tricky choice, I think this is a better engine, but maybe the Tiger offers a little more of a roomy and comfortable riding position?
It’s definitely a good looking bike , with a good price , to much tech for me , but definitely a good review 👌
Thought you was going to mention the tyres 🤷♂️
Yep I realised after it was uploaded I left that bit out of the edit! 🤦🏻♂️
@@mancavemoto take it you wasn’t keen on those tyres then 👍
@@johnsutherland8239 no they were good, I just forgot to include the footage!
@@mancavemoto I know a lot of people are not always keen on the Bridgestone and prefer the Michelin tyres , I have gone back to the Bridgestone because of punctures in the other brands , never had a puncture with a Bridgestone 👍
So why refer to it as a sports tourer rather than what it is an adventure tourer.
I would argue it’s not an adventure tourer. They would usually have a 19 inch front wheel at least and have some kind of off road capability.
Plush for a sports tourer...
Hmm, that looks like the '22 model, the' 23 model has changed the TFT took a single 7" TFT, looks loads better
Only the 2023 GT plus gets the new single TFT
@@mancavemoto aha! A sneaky way I'll use up the old TFTs whilst making more dosh on a premium model
@@mickleblade yep I suspect to get more people to go for the new model before they roll it out across all the variations
Yamaha should have put the TFT display on this model to. Disappointing
I suspect it will follow in next years refresh? At the moment its maybe enough of a driver to push people towards the GT plus?
That dash... it looks like Woody Allen.
I thought Yamaha would replace the the Groucho Marx instruments with the clocks from the GT+. C'mon Yamaha, it's 2023!
This is not 2023. 23 has single large display
Oh but it is, only the GT plus has the single tft in the 2023 model year line up….
👍👌
This isn't the 2023 model it has a new TFT, so either you're terribly late to the party old chap, or this is intentional click bait 🤔😕
Incorrect my friend, only the GT Plus model in the 2023 line up gets the new TFT. The Standard Tracer and Tracer GT keep the split display
@@mancavemoto My sincere apologies for my misjudgement based on misinformation from Toad on a Visordown launch video. You'd expect that being treated to a trip abroad to ride both the new Niken and 900 Tracer models, they'd at least get their facts right. " Both the GT and the GT+ have a new TFT screen" obviously not 🤔😕 I've grown to dislike these manufacturer sponsored test rides and reviews for their glossed over reviews. I now can't even trust them to get the specs right 🙃
I’m saying nothing…..😏😉
🤣
Not a looker. Gimme an fjr1300
i had one and got rid of it within three months, worst bike ive had in years. Suspension is crap. Couldn't get on with it
Always seem like decent bikes this the mt09 etc Yamaha just skimp on parts and not price rubber hoses poor finishing poor materials suspension etc same with the mt07 and tenere no way should a t7 have a 10k price tag with the basic spec it has I think triumph are missing a trick not making a new tiger sport with a 1200 engine in it a lot of people loved the old 1050
Or/and Sprint ST.
@@markharrison2484 yup with the ninja sx and the Suzuki 1000gt selling so well I don’t see why they won’t make it again
Such a nice bike ruined by that dashboard it's like having a face with large square glasses and a big nose looking at you
That dash.. 🤮
beatyful bike, but that display .... cannot look at it
I had one for two months.
Sweet engine but what a fugly dash.. worst on a current bike.
2023 Old tracer 9 GT you mean... Bit late to the game mate.
Did I call it a ‘new’ Tracer? It’a a 2023 bike, we can’t all be reviewing bikes at launch, but thanks for the comment
Design wise it isn't beautiful
I would override the "corner on" option and keep em on all the time. CAGERS just don't pay attn. to us.😄
