      Another Rose Parade fact, Cardozo High School Marching Band, Washington, D.C., was the first predominantly/historically Black (all-Black, actually) high school band to march in the Rose Parade in 1981. The year prior, 1980, Souther made its first appearance in the parade.
      Also in 1981, both Cardozo High School & Southern University marched in Ronald Reagan’s Inauguration parade. The day before the parade, Southern came to our school (Cardozo) to practice for the parade.

    It was a memorable three performances for the NSU band: Bandfest, Disneyland and the grand Rose Parade. Californians loved them and some were saying Behold the Green and Gold and wanting to touch the shiny gold helmets after the parade. What an experience for the talented young musicians or for any HBCU band that gets invited. Glad I witnessed NSU put on an amazing show!

    I remember when Southern marched in 2020, a group of Hispanic kids from Compton pretty much followed the Juke the entire parade route. Their friend was in the band and they were so excited. At the end of parade they took pictures with the drum major, Travon Caesar, and several other members. A few wanted to become members; not sure if any actually went to Southern. The bands really are ambassadors for the schools because Southern also performed at a Lakers game and at First African Episcopal Church of Los Angeles (F.A.M.E.)

      Rose Parade has done a good job in recent years inviting HBCUs bands, particularly since 2019. One has been invited each year. But remember, the parade is more than 130 years old. There have been many years that had no HBCU representation.

    Are HBCU paid, plus expenses, to participate? Do HBCU find difficulty in keeping their budgets in the black? If you are poor, does EVERY penny matter?

    • @leoncarter7798
      @leoncarter7798 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      From what I understand, all bands pay their way. Bands are notified a year in advance so they can begin their fundraising. A member of Rose Parade committee visits and makes a local tv appearance to raise awareness. Alumni, frats and soros, churches, sponsors, etc. all help raise money. It becomes a tremendous community effort. The payoff: enrollment usually increases the following year because of the exposure. Exposure also helps with band recruitment.

    • @jmanhope1745
      @jmanhope1745 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@leoncarter7798 I have often heard the possibility of exposure and enrollment increases. Can we imagine using those hundreds of thousands of dollars to aggressively recruit top high school scholars, athletes and musicians in the southern states, where most HBCU are located?

    • @leoncarter7798
      @leoncarter7798 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Most HBCUs are located in the south. Alabama and North Carolina have at least 10. Many HBCUs don’t get the exposure they should. Their bands are great ambassadors. Donations and enrollment usually increase after being on an international stage such as Rose Parade.
