Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski, who worked together in Pirates, reunite for the CG animated film Rango, for which Paramount has released a behind the scenes featurette. Based on an original idea by Verbinski, Rango is scripted by The Aviator scribe John Logan. Johnny Depp stars as an Hawaiian-shirt-wearing "chameleon with an identity crisis." Previous information has stated that Rango is "a oddly charismatic household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self." The movie co-stars Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant as The Spirit of the West.

I like how they used this method of acting instead of just standing in front of a microphone with headphones on and reading lines off a script...this really seemed to help get the actors in character.
Honestly, I think more animation needs to do this sort of thing.

This is how it's done except most of the times us animators do the acting and then animate it it. It really isn't necessary to have the actor act it out like this, it's only for reference and you probably have to pay the actors extra for the acting. Keep in mind the animators are also professional actors, it's part of our job

Hahahahaha I feel you! I used to rewatch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when a kid, and just many years later, at 14 when I was already his fan based on other movies I came to realize it was him. And it wasn't even an animated movie 😂. Rango I've watched knewing it was him.

There’s never a role Johnny Depp can’t nail. He is so good! This was one of my childhood favorite films and is an underrated gem of a film. The story, characters and animation are still so good even now. The reflections and textures and the water it’s so good! I love it when animated films have the voice actors actually act out the scenes as if it was live-action it makes the scenes and dialogue so much more natural.
Edit: You can definitely tell they all had a lot of fun making this.

I would watch the entire movie from behind the scenes perspective
Disney began this type of filming back in the 30's when they were making Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. They would have the actors act out the movie and the animators would watch and use their movements and emotions to create the characters. I'm glad they are bringing this back it gives this movie so much more character and realism. well surrealism really
Thats rotoscope. The 3d equivilent is motion tracking, this is not that. They are animating the movie separately but using the actors movements and expressions as a refrence.
@@averagejoe9040 WRONG! Rotoscoping is a method of drawing over the live action footage. Old Disney animated movies use live action footage as reference for movements. They did not draw over the footage.

yess! I am pretty sure that I spotted a nod to his character in Sleepy Hollow too! In the scene where he is suddenly the new sheriff and is getting dressed up and Beans goes to try and talk to him and she says "Has anyone even told you what happened to our last sherriff?" -- then the camera goes over to an outside undertaker bug, doing something with a coffin, and he has on those huge strange contraption glasses from Sleepy Hollow lmao
I never seen fear and loathing in las vegas but seen the memes and pictures of the movie, so when I first watched rango and he hits the windshield I knew the reference
