  • In this Lage Lund Lesson I am taking a look at three licks from a live solo with the OWL Trio. The three examples are demonstrating things that Lage does very well in his playing. Making strong melodies with basic arpeggios. A great chord voicing and also an example of a more modern sounding Lage Lund Lick.
    I also discuss some of the many ways the chord voicing can be put to use and that you can actually use it to play the entire song Green Dolphin Street.
    The complete song is available here: • Lage Lund, Will Vinson...
    A transcription can be found here:

      Ok I understand!
      His favourite was the great bud powell-and I think
      you really can hear this,his lines are pure bebop, I think.
      Because he transcribed solo piano perfomance, he has in interesting approach to solo guitar-
      maybe a new joe pass with better technique? ;)
      Greetings

    Thanks Jens! You have provided real insight and useful ideas that I can use in my playing. You also connect the way Lage Lund thinks to useful frameworks and identify some of the key ingredients of his playing. All packed into a short digestible video. Bravo!

    Lage Lund !! one of the best out there,,i ve been studying some of his concepts (mostly armonic stuff that ofcourse is melodic too) , and still i do,,it takes time to come out with something but i think it s worth to acheive your own original voice IMO,,i m glad u ve spoken about him a bit. ciao!

      Jens Larsen ,,i m pretty sure you know all my beloved musicians and,,guitarist,,but if u ask me i d say Kurt Rosenwinkel/Mike Moreno/Lage Lund/Jesse Van Ruller/Martijn Van Iterson,,as for the ""old ones" : Wes Montgomery/Tal Farlow/Grant Green/Ted Green/Ed Bickert,, Scott Henderson and Jeff Beck not really involved in jazz(atleast not 100%) but i love them alot,,ciao!

    Jens, terrific discussion and examples from a great player. I discovered Lage a few years ago and found that his ideas got me out of my safe zone in terms of what I always expected in to hear in voicings. I like the reference to "Watch What Happens," as it's representative of what I like about this series you're doing on specific players: you dissect features that exemplify their approach in a variety of situations -- which we, too, can apply diversely. Much better than a lesson to encourage aping someone's style -- I've never understood the clone aspiration. ... As to future player discussions in this series, are you a René Thomas admirer at all? He's one of my favorites.

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Elizabeth! I am indeed not that familiar with René Thomas, but I started checking out some recordings. It probably takes time for me to have an idea about a players style enough to make a video like this. But, suggestions are of course very welcome, since you know him better than me 🙂

      Yes the video was about using one chord shape to play all the chords in a tune and other ways he uses chords, at the beginning, he said this video is not about drop 2 or 3 chords lol

    Jens, thanks for your, always good, musical insight. You mentioned the Joe Pass album, Intercontinental, I wore that record out transcribing licks abbd chords. I think Joe's best work came from trios with bass and drums or duets with the inimitable bassist, Neils Pedersen.

    Hi Jens, I’ve been playing with my combo this week and have mostly been using shell or full voicings on the E and A strings when comping. When listening to your backing tracks, they sound great and I’d like to know what voicings you typically use when comping since I want to have a better vocabulary and want to make a more interesting sound for myself. All help is appreciated since your videos are so helpful to me

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Markus! I mostly use voicings without a root when I comp in a band. Try playing what you normally play but leave out the root 🙂
      I have a video on that somewhere if you want a link then let me know

    Hey jens, back with another question haha, how do you find the right balance between target notes and scale notes, like if ur playing an f7 over Bbmaj7 scale how do you find the balance betweeen playing bmaj7 and f7

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jacob. There is no real reason to worry about a balance. Use your ear and try to make good melodies. I don't think there is any real need to think about a ratio.
      I wouldn't really try to play F7 over a Bbmaj7. Go with things that really work over the chord 🙂

      Maybe a good idea for topic is a video to talk about yourself as a jazz musician and by that i mean that i never saw any video someone talk for daily life of a jazz musician.The difficulties,the opportunities you have,how you connect with the public and of course the big scourge that all jazz players have.How to really play yourself.It is something that eats my minds years now.I am still trying to find it.I copy a lot many years and now i am trying to play only myself and i know it s hard but maybe all of us we can learn it s other.And for the last..You were in Rotterdam around 2009 i think in an master class with John Ambercrombie playing qouestion and answer by Pat Metheny or I am wrong??anyway great playing that time i still remember it..

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Manos! That's a difficult topic to put into a video I think, but I will keep it in mind 🙂 I actually think I am pretty open about how I practice myself already?
      I was not in a masterclass in Rotterdam in 2009. I was there as a sub jazz guitar teacher a few days and also sitting in the end exam commisions?
