Earthquake Scientist explains quake that hit California and Nevada | FULL INTERVIEW

- Authorities say a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that was felt across hundreds of miles in California and Nevada didn't cause any major damage or injuries. The United States Geological Survey said the quake hit near the California-Nevada border southeast of Markleeville. Its epicenter was centered just miles from Walker, California. It was followed by dozens of aftershocks, including nearly a half-dozen of magnitude 4.0 or greater.
Dr. Angela Chung, of the Berkeley Seismology Lab, explains the earthquakes that happened across California and Nevada.

People forget that just south of this location Coleville California is Mono Lake, Mono Lake has a volcanic field that us currently dormant. Mammoth Lakes, The Table, and The Table is actually a cooled magma dome that was left over from a caldera that was formed in the huge Long Valley eruption. Long Valley had a vary large earthquake in 1872 that was estimated at 7.9-8.0 plus, the surface scarp from this earthquake is clearly visible today including a small lake formed by the elevation changes. Long Valley is also the thinnest spot on the earths crust, wrap your head around that fact, magma is very close to the surface in this area.

It's OK, earthquakes are normal here, happens all the time, nothing to see..............unless it's a really BIG one, and the ground opens up, or your walls come down....but, no worries.

Interesting…when they talked about the heat wave. I have a theory. Since it’s so hot the heat dries the earths crusts, all the weight shifting around is probably a likely cause to cause a shift and start a breaking point causing an earthquake. I only say this because I’ve lived in Cali all my life(42years) and it’s been getting hotter every year. I’ve experienced many earthquakes in Cali and it’s like a pattern.
