Great video Joe. I recently won a decked out DC barrel smoker and I need to season it. Barrel smokers are new to me. Being that’s it’s a good addition to the rest of my pits, I need to get it ready. I do have some ?’s. Is spraying it down necessary? And on using oil absorbent, is that done after every use? when is it removed and do I have to wash out barrel with soap and water to remove oil absorbent dust?
Hello Chris, the purpose of the oil is to keep to season the metal like you would cast iron so I personally think it's important. The oil absorbent stay in my drums for like 6 cooks before I change it out. I wash my drum after every 6 cooks and do this exact process each time. 🤘
Hey Joe. Did you say how long to season? A couple of hours or more? You have some beautiful Cadillac smokers. I built an Ugly smoker last year, and I didn't season it. Now I'm using my angle grinder with a wire brush to remove built-up rust which was created last winter. I live in Northern Illinois. Thank you. - Jose
Great vid. I’m in the market for a barrel smoker. Question…. Is the absorbent safe to cook with? I know it’s on the bottom but wouldn’t it release fumes once heated?
Just asking a question that all dry that you put it down in the Gateway drum does it bother your food if you can your drum to a competition is the judges going to say anything about you having the oil dry in the bottom of your drum just wondering
Why the special High temp paint job? Are you going to use it for grilling! I would like the have one thing that could do both smoke and grill! Great Video!
Not necessarily grill but the paint holds on a bit better. You would think they would just use that paint on everything they sold right. Thanks for watching.👍🏼
I bought one from Sam's that works great. Just try not to get any on the paint. m.samsclub.com/ip/oven-fryer-grill-cln-3-x-32-ounce/prod9260461?pid=_CSE_CSSGoogleFix_Connex_98_84724&source=ifpla&CAWELAID=730010300000968885
Hello Xavier, I add it and leave it in there. It's 100% all natural and USDA approved. Use that specific brand as not all absorbents are 100% natural. 👍🏼 Buy it at Oreilly Auto Parts, look for the bag with a picture of a grill.
thank you for your swift response, and the info!! im currently in the middle of a second drum build, will use that method for sure! you have a awesome channel! thanks again!!@@SmokinJoesPitBBQ
I just finished watching your brisket prime vid, awesome!! I have a pit barrel still In the box in the garage and just smoked 2 10 pond butts on the horizon off set last sunday I love your drum vids!!@@SmokinJoesPitBBQ
An FYI ....Cooking spray contains a chemical in the propellant that doesn't wash off (or cook) off. Manufacturers of non-stick cookware warn against using it. Maybe not a big deal, but why not use oil in a spritzer to be safe?
Nice lookin smoker but bad design. The heat defuser looks like a pain to clean around and I'm not going to use kitty litter in a smoker or an automotive absorbent as some do.
You might want to be aware of how many times you use the word "guys" in the video. Watch it and keep track of the count. Good informative video, but the word seemed to be overused.
Hey thanks John. It's my comfort word I guess but something I've been trying to use less and less of. Check out my new videos and let me know what you think. Thanks for the feedback.👍🏼
Nice walk thru on the Gateway Drum. Those are nice. Love the size too. Really love the red one being my fav color. Thanks Joe
Thanks for watching Phil! I wonder why red is your favorite color? 🤔 LOL
Those are great looking pits. Great video Joe
Lots of cool information here. I’ll be burning in a drum today. That’s a cool
chimney with the trap door on the bottom is a great idea.
Big Lew! Yes sir, it really helps dump the charcoal. Thanks for watching and stay safe. 👍🏼
This is exactly what I was looking for. I have a really nice drum smoker that I haven't seasoned yet.
Awesome Isaac!👍🏼
I have 2 cans. 1 for some reason likes to burn at 300 and the other stays at 275. I named mine Speedy Gonzalez and Slow Poke Rodriguez. Nice video.
Love the names Brian. Lol Thanks for watching my friend. 👍🏽

Great video. I just purchased a 55g Gateway. Looking forward to using it. Do you put the Thrifty Sorb in a container under the charcoal basket?
Very nice! I have an 18 WSM. I might pick one of these up to see the difference, or try a rib/chicken hanging rack in mine. (y)
Nice John! I need to get back on my drums!👍🏼

It doesn't bother the food and judges won't say anything. It's 100% natural. 👍

What do you think about the cheaper drums like the Pit Barrel?
The Pit Barrel is an amazing cooker.👍🏼
Smokin' Joe's Pit BBQ Thank You Smokin Joe!
Awesome video dude, I’m planning on getting two gateways for competitions in a month or so. Are they really that worth it?
Oh yeah Cruz! The food cooked on these bad boys taste amazing!
I did exactly that same method with the exception of briquettes I used lump all the oils drained down to the base and caught fire and temp went to 700
Oh dang! Did it burn your paint? I used very little oil.
What type of degreaser do you use I bought a used pit barrel and I want to clean it out before I cook on it?
I bought one from Sam's that works great. Just try not to get any on the paint. m.samsclub.com/ip/oven-fryer-grill-cln-3-x-32-ounce/prod9260461?pid=_CSE_CSSGoogleFix_Connex_98_84724&source=ifpla&CAWELAID=730010300000968885

Hello Joseph, these are 55 gallons.
Where did u get that chimney charcoal starter from??
Hello Dewayne, I bought it from Walmart.👍🏼
do you put that absorbent down before and keep during the cook?? if so, any safety concerns?

Have you ever considered putting a lid hinge on your Gateway drum? I just picked up a used Gateway and was thinking about it. Your thoughts. Thanks!
Hello Tom, that would make things easier for sure.👍🏼
What type of paint did they use on the red Gateway?
Hey Jim, not sure but I'm sure its a high temp paint. 👍🏽
You should name her, “Smokn-Jane.” That’s a fitting name for its owner, if you haven’t it yet. Nice.
Love it!🤘
Looks like an Indy Colt Smoker ?
LOL! YOU MUST BE REFERING TO THE BEAT DOWN THE COLTS GAVE MY BOYS! 😁
having a little fun.. nice smokers ! @@SmokinJoesPitBBQ

That works too. 👍🏼
Lone star grill perhaps?
Nope, Yoder. 😁
why would you put oil on before you burn the manufacturing oil off?
There really isn't a whole lot of the factory oil. In fact, mine had a few dry spots. 👍🏼
Name submission: Jennifer
Nice!👍🏽
