Hi theresa gann. Thanks for stopping by and watching. This is called projection mapping, and consists of two parts: First the mapping, where you place the projector so its beam covers the whole house. Then you outline the shape and features of the house in a paint program on a laptop connected to the projector while it's being projected onto the house. You mark the placement of the projector, so you can repeat it when showing the finished video. Second step, is the creation of the video, using the "map" you made of the house. I use Adobe After Effects to make the video, and place the different elements so they fit the shape of the house. Textures are done in Photoshop, some of the animations are from AtmosFX, and some I make myself. This video is pretty advanced, but it's easy to get started with something simpler, and still get a great effect. :)
Hi Trolley Troll. Wow, thank you so much. I hope you enjoyed the rest of them, although the old ones are a little more simple as I was learning as I went along. Happy Halloween to you too. :)
I wish I could do something like this for my kids and our neighborhood, I don't have a big house but it would be fun. I'm not great with computer programs, but I would love to learn how. I'm a single mom so it would be awesome to do for them cuz this is our favorite holiday.
Hi Aaron. Thanks for watching. The learning curve for doing something like this video is a bit steep, but it doesn't have to be this elaborate to have a big effect. Just lighting up the house in color, and including a few effects and skeletons is pretty cool, because of the scale of it. There are a few beginner tutorials out there to watch if you feel you're up for the challenge. :)
Hi Sophia Bridgwood. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I haven't watched the show, but it has to be somewhat kid-friendly because of the audience. :)
Hi alexcia. Thanks for stopping by and watching. If you're planning on doing something like this when you get your house, please post your result. I'd love to see it. :)
@projectthishouse we want to do home projection so bad. Getting overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start. Would love you gather a list of items and tips from you if possible?
Hi Andrea Gleason. Thanks for watching. I think the best advice I can give is to start small. Even just lighting up the house with a great texture is a great effect. Then if that works and you feel you have time and energy, begin adding small elements to your project. The biggest mistake is to break your neck on a very ambitious idea on the first try and end up with nothing because you ran out of time or you couldn't make it look right. :) You'll need a projector and a computer with some video editing software, so there's also an expense in $ if you don't already have any of those. For me, I had all that, so it was just the time. :) If you need to buy a projector, I suggest you look for a "short throw"-model. They have more of a wide angle lens, so you can place it closer to the house and not lose too much light intensity. DON'T buy ANY projector coming out of China!! :)
Hi Kindra Brock. Thanks for watching. I'll definitely go with a "short throw" model, and then something with 3000+ lumens. Your wallet will then have to make the decision from there. I've been using a BenQ MX819ST myself. :)
Hi Merona. Thanks for stopping by and watching. This is called projection mapping, and consists of two parts: First the mapping, where you place the projector so its beam covers the whole house. HI Guillaume Cardon. Thanks for watching. Yes, the growing vines are "homemade". I found a Cinema4D tutorial on TH-cam that showed the general idea, and then I just tweaked it to fit my house model. I was pretty simple, just took a little bit of time rendering. :)
Hi Debby. Thanks for watching. I believe it was when I saw the 100th celebration of the bike race Tour De France, where they transformed the Arc de Triomphe in Paris with projection mapping. That got me looking into the technique and gave me the idea to do something similar on my house. :)
Hi do u offer classes.. I’m willing to pay to learn this technique. This is awesome. I have knowledge in photoshop and illustrator but not After Effects and I would love to learn from someone who is dedicated to do this specific effects. How can I contact you?
I do not offer classes, but do my best to answer any questions in detail. You can contact me on Facebook (facebook.com/ProjectThisHouse) or at projectthishouse@gmail.com :)
Hi Leif. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I don't use a projection program for this. I do it the old fashioned way, by "mapping" my house using a paint program, and then using that as the blueprint when making the video in AfterEffects. If that didn't make sense, I'll be happy to explain further. :)
@@leifyoung9497 Well, first I have to draw a map of how my house is seen through the projector's lens. So I place the projector in a spot in front of my house where the projected image is covering the whole house. Then I connect a computer to the projector and open a blank image in a paint program that covers the entire screen of the computer. This image is now projected onto the house. Now, using a line tool in the paint program, I start outlining all the features of my house, so at the end I have a blueprint or wireframe image of my house the way the projector sees it from that exact spot. I now mark the spot on the ground where the projector was placed, and shut everything down and move back indoors. I import the blueprint into After Effects and start adding elements in layers on top of it. It can be anything from textures for the walls or video clips of skeletons or ghosts. It's only your skills and imagination that limit what you can do. When you're done, you export a movie of the After Effect composition, and move back outside, setting up the projector at the exact same spot as before. When you play the video from your computer, everything lines up perfectly on your house, and you have a House Projection. That was the short version. I hope it made sense. :)
Hi John Hillier. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. This was done using a single projector. I have since started stacking projectors and aligning them using MadMapper software, but it is tricky to get perfect,. :)
Hi Jonezy1983. Thanks for watching. To get results like this, you have to make the map yourself. It will fit only your house, so unfortunately it's not something that can be mass-produced and sold. :)
Hi Hector. Thanks for stopping by and watching. Unfortunately I do not make projections for others. I would simply have to charge too much to make it worth my time. :)
Hi Tyler. Thank you for stopping by and watching. Well, most time is spend on getting the idea and then a lot of trial and error. Once I know what will be in it and actually start putting it together, it's pretty quick due to the initial mapping of the house can be reused year after year.
@@tylergoble9017 Hi Tyler, I only do Halloween because it's just the one night. The setup required would make a Christmas show too much of a hassle to set up and take down every night in the weeks leading up to Christmas. :)
Hi Forrest Nichols. Thanks for visiting my channel. This is done with a single BenQ MX819ST with 3000 lumens. I am experimenting with a multiple projector setup for this year. I really hope it works out. :)
Hi Jeremy. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I use a BenQ MX819ST with 3000 lumens, but think the better quality of video compared to previous years is the upgrade of my phone to an iPhone 11 LOL. Please post your projection on TH-cam, I would love to see it. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse You've helped me with a question I've had for months. That BenQ model has a spec distance range of up to ~12', but you're using it at 30' with obviously great performance. Are you losing image at the corners to vignetting or notice that the focal image isn't flat? I've been holding off of a purchase of an Optoma EH412ST since it's max spec distance is 11' and I'd need it at 19' to fill the house. But I'm thinking it would work fine.
@@MCR6000 I think when the manufactures list their specs, they put the max distance as the furthest away you can be and still achieve the lumens they promise. So when I move my projector back to 30 ft, I'm not getting 3000 lumens anymore, but the video is still in focus (well, not 100% everywhere, as the distance from the center to the corners will vary by a handful of feet, as you mention, but it's not noticeable).
@@ProjectThisHouse Thanks for the info and great job on your show. It tells a good story with a creative design. These comments really helped me deciding on a projector. Your house is fairly close in design to mine and the projector would be at roughly 30ft as well. Where is the projection in relation to the house? How high is it off the ground? Can you share information about your projector enclosure?
@@duframe2008, my projector is only out on Halloween Even, so I don't really have the need for an enclosure. The one year it drizzled a little bit (so far), I put a pop-up over it. It's just positioned on a regular projector stand (google H. Wilson WPS3 Mobile Presentation Station /Projector Stand with Adjustable Shelf) that has a little shelf for my laptop. That puts the projector about 4 ft off the ground. As my house is sitting up a little bit from the front of the driveway, that makes the projector flush with the foundation of the house, which mean I have to tilt the projector down a little bit to cover everything. If you look the videos I have that are in a wider shot, you can kind of see the setup. I can't wait to see what you come up with. :)
Hi Fernando. Thanks for watching. I use a consumer BenQ MX819ST projector. A projector is basically just is big flashlight, and if you shine a flashlight on anything black, it just stays black. So if you want to project onto glas, it'll need a milky layer of film on it to work. I hope that helped. :)

Hi Jessi D. Thanks for stopping by and watching. The ghosts are most certainly real - they keep us up every night with their singing! ;)
wow..,..this is great ,,,,do u share how to do this,,,,,i live in murfreesboro, tn and kids cannot trick or treat this year but with this i could put out candy an let them watch,,,,,halloween is my favorite holiday....great great job,,,,.you made halloween fun ...thank you
Hi theresa gann. :)
This. is. incredible.
Hi Mike Trow. I'm. Happy. You. Liked. It. :)
Amazing job! I've just discovered your channel. This is so cool and I'm about to binge watch your other ones. Happy Halloween!!!! 🎃🦇🥧👹😊🍁🍂🎆👺🕯☠🥂
Loved This! Love Depeche Mode!
Hi Karen O. Thank you for being the first viewer to recognize DM at the end. I'm a big fan too. :)
Greatest creepy one yet
Hi Kay Eaton. Thanks for watching. I'm happy you liked it. :)
This is the coolest damn thing I've ever seen! 😁
Awww, thank you, Angela. I'm happy you enjoyed it. :)
Looks really awesome
Thank you so much. I'm happy you enjoyed it. :)
I’m glad I can across this it’s amazing
Maybe u could do a American horror story one year
Hi Sophia Bridgwood. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I haven't watched the show, but it has to be somewhat kid-friendly because of the audience. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse oh ok then maybe u could do a witch who makes the house have a giant spider on it
This blow my mind can't wait get my house
Hi alexcia. Thanks for stopping by and watching. If you're planning on doing something like this when you get your house, please post your result. I'd love to see it. :)
Cool. Love it
Hi Kim Neill. Thanks for watching. I'm happy you enjoyed it. :)
I have 1 question can i have one ove your old projectors cuz i dont wanna bye one and not like it i know it wont fit my housr but i wanna try it
Hi HomeSchool Twins. I'm sorry. I've sold the older ones as I've upgraded to newer ones. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse oh ok can i have one when you dont git a new one
@projectthishouse we want to do home projection so bad. Getting overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start. Would love you gather a list of items and tips from you if possible?
Hi Andrea Gleason. Thanks for watching. I think the best advice I can give is to start small. Even just lighting up the house with a great texture is a great effect. Then if that works and you feel you have time and energy, begin adding small elements to your project. The biggest mistake is to break your neck on a very ambitious idea on the first try and end up with nothing because you ran out of time or you couldn't make it look right. :)
You'll need a projector and a computer with some video editing software, so there's also an expense in $ if you don't already have any of those. For me, I had all that, so it was just the time. :)
If you need to buy a projector, I suggest you look for a "short throw"-model. They have more of a wide angle lens, so you can place it closer to the house and not lose too much light intensity. DON'T buy ANY projector coming out of China!! :)
What type of projector do you recommend?
Hi Kindra Brock. Thanks for watching. I'll definitely go with a "short throw" model, and then something with 3000+ lumens. Your wallet will then have to make the decision from there. I've been using a BenQ MX819ST myself. :)
how do you make these? like how do you set the projector to set the projection to match the house like that? also how do you make the video?
Hi Merona. Thanks for stopping by and watching. This is called projection mapping, and consists of two parts: First the mapping, where you place the projector so its beam covers the whole house. Very fun !
I recognize many projections from Atmosfx, but i'm very interested about your vine/creeping plant (3:18)
Homemade animation ?
HI Guillaume Cardon. Thanks for watching. Yes, the growing vines are "homemade". I found a Cinema4D tutorial on TH-cam that showed the general idea, and then I just tweaked it to fit my house model. I was pretty simple, just took a little bit of time rendering. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse Very interesting about your tutorial ! Have you got the link ?

Wow! This is so awesome! 🖤👍🏻😊
Hi Hexenstaub. I'm happy you liked it. Thanks for watching. :)
can you make a full tutorial on how to make something like this
Hi Muhammad. Thats for stopping by and watching. That is the plan, but right now I just wanna get on the couch and sleep for a week. :)
Wow that’s
Sooooo cool just just wow
I really loved this years addition of telling a story, when/how did you actually decide to go full out on Halloween with these projections?
Hi Debby. Thanks for watching. I believe it was when I saw the 100th celebration of the bike race Tour De France, where they transformed the Arc de Triomphe in Paris with projection mapping. That got me looking into the technique and gave me the idea to do something similar on my house. :)
ProjectThisHouse oh seriously? That’s awesome! Keep up the great work, I always enjoy your uploads and I’m looking forward to next years craziness 🤪
This is amazing you did a great job on this
Hi Teresa russell. I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by and watching. :)
I saw that you said it's a normal short throw projector, rather than an ultra. Which model is it? Also, what color is the paint on your house?
This is a BenQ MX819ST with 3000 lumens and the paint on the house is “tan” or “sand” - says my wife LOL.
Wow! That's so cool, awesome
Thank you, Alisa. I'm happy you enjoyed it. :)
Absolutely love it!
Hi Andy. I appreciate you stopping by and liking it. :)
Where is this house at?
Hi Alondra Soriana. Thanks for stopping by and watching. We're located outside Sacramento in California. :)
That was cool as hell. GOOD JOB
Thank you, willard. I’m happy you liked it. Thanks for watching. :)
Omggg that’s insane!!! Hahah
Hi Maria H. Thank you for stopping by and watching. I'm happy you liked it. :)
who built out the video for the projection? what a great job!
Hi Andrew Scudera. Thanks for watching and the kind words. This is 100% homemade with a handful added elements from AtmosFX.com. :)
Wow that was amazing...
Hi DJ A Buffalo. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I'm happy you enjoyed it.
VERY well done!
Hi Josh. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. I'm happy you liked it. :)
I am curious which projection program you used... I would love to get a setup of this on my house...
Hi Leif. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I don't use a projection program for this. I do it the old fashioned way, by "mapping" my house using a paint program, and then using that as the blueprint when making the video in AfterEffects. If that didn't make sense, I'll be happy to explain further. :)
ProjectThisHouse I like to know how because I am a master of Halloween and ultimate oogler of imagination I like how you designed it all
@@leifyoung9497 Well, first I have to draw a map of how my house is seen through the projector's lens.
Hi, I know this post is 2 yrs old, awesome work, wondering if you used more than 1 projector?
Hi John Hillier. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. This was done using a single projector. I have since started stacking projectors and aligning them using MadMapper software, but it is tricky to get perfect,. :)
Thanks for responding, you' d think it was more than one, colors are bright and crisp, really great work.
@@johnhillard3717. Thank you. I just went back and checked. This was done when I was still using my old BenQ MX819ST with only 3000 lumens. :)
@@ProjectThisHouse thank you
Where can you buy these maps already made? Everyone i see online look corny and cheese like a walmart gimicky projection just cut to fit a house
Hi Jonezy1983. Thanks for watching. To get results like this, you have to make the map yourself. It will fit only your house, so unfortunately it's not something that can be mass-produced and sold. :)
Hey project this house do you do this for anyone else I would like to get a Christmas one I have my house already mapped
Hi Hector. Thanks for stopping by and watching. Unfortunately I do not make projections for others. I would simply have to charge too much to make it worth my time. :)
That ending 😂
Very cool!! ☠☠☠👍
Hi Sally Daniel. Thanks for stopping by and watching. I'm happy you enjoyed it. :)
How long does it take to do? And always loved these wish I could go and see it in person
Hi Tyler. Thank you for stopping by and watching. Well, most time is spend on getting the idea and then a lot of trial and error. Once I know what will be in it and actually start putting it together, it's pretty quick due to the initial mapping of the house can be reused year after year.
@@ProjectThisHouse well keep it up love it every Halloween and do u every Christmas too or just Halloween?
@@tylergoble9017 Hi Tyler, I only do Halloween because it's just the one night. The setup required would make a Christmas show too much of a hassle to set up and take down every night in the weeks leading up to Christmas. :)
What projector do you use..is this one projector or multi.. great output. Thank you
Hi Forrest Nichols. Thanks for visiting my channel. This is done with a single BenQ MX819ST with 3000 lumens. I am experimenting with a multiple projector setup for this year. I really hope it works out. :)
I can’t wait for 2020s!!!
Really amazing this year!!! Great job! I ran 2 BenQs, but not as many lumens. Which model projector gives you that clarity and brightness? #addtocart
I've been holding off of a purchase of an Optoma EH412ST
since it's max spec distance is 11' and I'd need it at 19' to fill the house.
Which projector did u used? Do u know if it's possible to project on a glass with a dark layer/film on it?
Hi Fernando. Thanks for watching. I use a consumer BenQ MX819ST projector. A projector is basically just is big flashlight, and if you shine a flashlight on anything black, it just stays black. So if you want to project onto glas, it'll need a milky layer of film on it to work. I hope that helped. :)
ProjectThisHouse thanks
