In the new versions of blender, the shortcut "Alt+M" for merge is now only "M" Make art paintings come to life using the same method, check out the timelapse video. th-cam.com/video/2w002xat6SY/w-d-xo.html If you are having trouble unwraping the character's mesh, or the image is not appearing correctly on the mesh, make sure that you unwrap using "project from view" while in the camera view, otherwise, you can edit your UV from the UV editor (Same drop down list I got the shader edit) and adjust it to the character's image, I recommend that you unwrap in camera view so you get the unwrap exactly at the location of the character without having to edit it manually.
I was going so well until I select Alt+M and not seeing the "At Center" option. Only to realize 20 minutes later that all I need to select was "M" and no ALT in the latest Blender version.
Im using 4.2 and when I enable project from view 12:37 the picture leaves behind some parts of it in the plane and only a part of the picture is shown in the selected area as if the scale is zoomed in and it no longer fits in the frame. what do I do about this?
Thank you for the excellent tutorial video! I have run into multiple problems because of the now newer version 2.93.1, most of which I sorted out but one - my character is bigger than the mesh vert cut-out.
You are welcome, if you would let me know the problems you faced, I would be very grateful, I will list the problems in the description for other viewers to solve as well. Regarding the issue you are talking about, I think this might not be a problem from the difference in version, I am assuming you followed the tutorial until the tracing of the character with the vertices and now you want to put the image texture on the mesh as matetial, you should UV unwrap the mesh using "project from view" method while you are in the camera view so that the UV map of the mesh is exactly matching with the image texture. Let me know more details if the problem persists.

Hi @RG3D, when I try to add a image to the mesh (see 12:15 - 12:38), the image is added but it does not align with the mesh. I tried to solve this by going to the UV editor and aligning things manually. But the UV editor is difficult to work with, I just want things to align automatically similar to the video. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Edit: in order to solve the problem I changed my blender version to 2.8 (don't know if it is necessary but did it anyways) and followed the instructions in this video th-cam.com/video/huIQySVEfGk/w-d-xo.html
you have to be in camera view before you use project from view, assuming you have previously adjusted the camera resolution to the image resolution .. you shouldn't need to roll back to 2.8 to get it working, its working the same way in version 3.0, there is a another workflow I use in this tutorial, please check that out th-cam.com/video/6Qn__oU__DI/w-d-xo.html
I followed the tutorial very well and it is a great tutorial. You are outstanding raymond. in your tutorial, you used a single vertex and then traced it to fit the image. I'm just wondering if there's a way to do the tracing automatically? thanks
Thank you so much for the encouraging comment, unfortunately I don't know of a way to do that, even if you used import images as planes as in my last tutorial you would still need to cut out the exact shape from the plane using the knife tool, I know that this is the most tedious part of the process.
@@RG3DAnimationstudio thank you for replying to my comment. you're right, this part is a bit tedious but still it's an awesome technique, thanks a lot for sharing.
Really like the video series. Im going to use it to animate a character for my steam profile. The only issue im running into is that the colors and image still look a bit off and less colorful, is there any way to fix that?
You would have to triangulate the images plane and cut off the empty parts around the character .. You need lots of vertices in the middle of the mesh so you can have deformation when animating the bones.
Is there any possible way to just animate an existing image on your device? I am new to this and confused. I have images without backgrounds I want to animate without using stuff I don't need.
Hi I am enjoying your videos however I am very new to all this and somewhat confused with the different ways of animating. I have taken a picture of a hand glove puppet and want to animate it for a Christmas project. I converted it to separate parts like arms legs head etc and turned them into png I have tried several ways with your videos but still cannot get the animation to work correctly for example after adding the bones I think I need the whole body head and arms move which is not correct. Do you have any suggestions please?
Hey John, thank you watching :) .. can you share screenshots or the blend file with me on discord (invitation link in description) we can discuss what you need there in more detail.
does it work to make a 2d game using this method in unity what i mean using the both software to create and animate character then import it and work on them
Clicking shift is to select both points at the same time after that press F and that should join the vertices with a segment between them ... You could also select both points by left clicking and dragging your mouse to make a box selection ... If you don't want to use shortcuts you can use the menu after selecting both points in edit mode go to vertex menu from the top left corner in the 3D viewport and choose New Edge/Face from vertices.
I was searching for this for along time. I wanted to ask, Instead of making the plane and all, isn't it easy to open a 2d Animation File and proceed from there?
@@RG3DAnimationstudio in blender we can start a project as a 2d animation project right, where they give a ready made plane and we just have to import our images and start working on it. Also glad you replied. This is amazing work I'm inspired, please keep up the good work. You actually taught me so much. This means alot.
Ok I get what you mean now, yeah I know this method and it is easier but it won't give you control over the character animation, it will only show you a premade animation, with this method you can rig your character and animate it.
@RG3D - Animation studio Ohhh, I really didn't know, thank you so much. I am still learning. Your content is lit! Thank you for posting and replying to me.❤️
I was trying in a different image and the result I got after unwrapping UV mesh was a distorted image of my figure with many triangular shapes in the image. Any ideas on that ?
Probably there is an issue with the mesh itself, in edit mode try pressing m and choosing by distance to merge duplicate verticeas .. and make sure you unwrap with project from view from camera view .. let me know if this helps
@@RG3DAnimationstudio thank you for your reply, I solved in Uv wrapping editting window by loading the image from top menu and setting the mesh accordingly. It was happening because the mesh size and the actual image size was different. After that I used shade smooth option to remove distortion.
I am still learning how to use Blender but I have seen that there is an Add-On called COA Tools. Do you know it? Wouldn't it be easier to make the animation using that Add-on?
Its basically doing the same thing, I am doing, but I prefer to do it manually like that because it will give you more control over your mesh. And sometimes addons work in an unexpected way, the addon is just gathering all the tools in one place which might be good but I think its more useful to know where the tools are in blender's own interface. You can check out the other 2D tutorials I have, might be useful.
I understand, try to UV-unwrap the mesh while you are in camera view and use "project from view" from the unwrap menu, update me if you still having issues. Another way of adjusting the UV is by using the UV editor, I didn't mention it in this tutorial but you can search for it, you can get it the same way you got the shader editor(not recommend in this case)

Great presentation. Too much going on in this presentation in less than 15 minutes. Only way to pick up this knowledge is use big monitor, see the moue, key and menus being used and do not hesitate to press pause as many times as needed. Being new to blender, I end up spending 2 hours to replicate what is done in video!
Hey tucker certainly you could, both ways have advantages and disadvantages, you can find the other way in this video th-cam.com/video/6Qn__oU__DI/w-d-xo.html
Make sure you have pressed "m" first while selecting all vertices and using merged by distance, then try using Alt+F again You can also just press F and then use the shortcut Ctrl+T to triangulate the face which will get you same result as Alt+F If that didn't work also, you might need to recreate the outline vertices ..
As an American born in New York City, I have to say that I found your accent to be largely unintelligible. I have tried my hardest to follow along but, sadly, I only get about 5 seconds at a time before I have to stop the video and rewind again. Over and over again, I have done this, literally spending hours trying to understand a 14 minute video. I am about 9 minutes in and am now totally stuck, probably because there has been a newer update of the Blender software (2.92). I realize that's not your fault but, as a result, I will have to abandon all the work I have done up until this point. Still, I think I could've figured it out, if I were able to get through your accent. I appreciate your efforts, and you do seem to know what you are doing. This is amazing! Also, what's that music in the intro from? Sounds so familiar. Was it the Sims?
I appreciated ur good explanation , thank you for the tutorial
You are most welcome 😊☺️
Hi @RG3D, when I try to add a image to the mesh (see 12:15 - 12:38), the image is added but it does not align with the mesh. I tried to solve this by going to the UV editor and aligning things manually. But the UV editor is difficult to work with, I just want things to align automatically similar to the video. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
Edit: in order to solve the problem I changed my blender version to 2.8 (don't know if it is necessary but did it anyways) and followed the instructions in this video th-cam.com/video/huIQySVEfGk/w-d-xo.html
you have to be in camera view before you use project from view, assuming you have previously adjusted the camera resolution to the image resolution .. you shouldn't need to roll back to 2.8 to get it working, its working the same way in version 3.0, there is a another workflow I use in this tutorial, please check that out
th-cam.com/video/6Qn__oU__DI/w-d-xo.html
Just realized that the images that you uploaded are not in 1280 x 1080. Are in 1088 x 918 actually. Just to let you know. Cheers.
Oh, actually I'm wrong. It is my image viewer that it gives me that incorrect information (irfanview). Don't worry about the images!
I am glad you are giving it a try, please let me know if you run into any issue.
the picture doesn't show up after unwraping the plane, I am using a far bigger size, is it because of that?
Did you apply the material with texture on the plane?
Yes, in addition to what is mentioned in the video, you can use emittion shader instead of the principled shader.
@@RG3DAnimationstudio That fixed it, tysm. I love that u are still answering questions to such an old tutorial. Very helpful work!
Would it work the same way if to just add an image plane instead?
You would have to triangulate the images plane and cut off the empty parts around the character .. You need lots of vertices in the middle of the mesh so you can have deformation when animating the bones.
Is there any possible way to just animate an existing image on your device? I am new to this and confused. I have images without backgrounds I want to animate without using stuff I don't need.
This tutorial should help out, I have more links in descriptions and pinned comment to other tutorials that might be useful
Hi I am enjoying your videos however I am very new to all this and somewhat confused with the different ways of animating. I have taken a picture of a hand glove puppet and want to animate it for a Christmas project. I converted it to separate parts like arms legs head etc and turned them into png
I have tried several ways with your videos but still cannot get the animation to work correctly for example after adding the bones I think I need the whole body head and arms move which is not correct. Do you have any suggestions please?
Hey John, thank you watching :) .. can you share screenshots or the blend file with me on discord (invitation link in description) we can discuss what you need there in more detail.
does it work to make a 2d game using this method in unity what i mean using the both software to create and animate character then import it and work on them
Yes you can import the rendered frame by frame as sprite sequence in unity
Is there a new way to link the vertex points (not shortcut)? I have been clicking shift on both points but nothing worked.
@@RG3DAnimationstudio Thanks. I clicked f to join the points. It was successful
Great, I am glad it worked 😊😊
best video! Thank you!!
You are welcome 😊
some of the addons on Blender are not in my addons list
What is the addon name?
I was searching for this for along time. I wanted to ask, Instead of making the plane and all, isn't it easy to open a 2d Animation File and proceed from there?
I am glad you found it .. what do you mean by 2d animation file ?
Thanks again !
You are welcome
This was a great tutorial, unfortunately the tab menu is gone so now I'm stuck.
It is not gone, it just changed to ctrl tab, instead of just tab
Thank you , great video
Thank you 😊🙏🏻
I am still learning how to use Blender but I have seen that there is an Add-On called COA Tools.
@@RG3DAnimationstudio Thanks for answer. Yeah, I'm agree, it is good to know where the tools are.
Thanks for the tutorial!
You are welcome 😊
Does it have to be Gimp, or can it be another software like Krita?
Krita will work just fine but I am not very good with it and I prefer Gimp with image manipulation
@@RG3DAnimationstudio Thank you :)
Excellent work!
Thank you :)
my witch pop in new mesh in small scale it not fitting in that new mesh
I understand, try to UV-unwrap the mesh while you are in camera view and use "project from view" from the unwrap menu, update me if you still having issues.
Another way of adjusting the UV is by using the UV editor, I didn't mention it in this tutorial but you can search for it, you can get it the same way you got the shader editor(not recommend in this case)
meh can't find new material icon on my blender 2.91 this sucks can't find them anywhere XD I'm a newbie so it sucks that I don't know where everything is and I don't even know what every icons does here XD
good tutorial though thanks! but I can't follow from 9:10 onwards cuz I can't find that new material icon XD
Hey there, I am not sure what mean by new material icon, @9:10 we have already added the material and we are adding the image texture in the shader editor .. a quick note, in the material tab, you can press the + sign and the new material button will appear.
@@RG3DAnimationstudio hai hai thank you! I'll try it tomorrow! Thank you again
Hey it's okay you are just starting out, its totally normal, may I suggest you start with blender fundemntals playlist th-cam.com/play/PLa1F2ddGya_-UvuAqHAksYnB0qL9yWDO6.html
This will help you get used to the interface pretty quickly. Give it a try then try going through this tutorial again maybe it will be a little easier to follow, if not let me know again what is the exact issue you are facing and I will be glad to help.
Thank you
You are most welcome, Thank you 😄
thanks a lot !!!

@@RG3DAnimationstudio Welcome bro

I Appreciate the support :)
@@RG3DAnimationstudio and i thank you soo much
Tutorial was bad. The use of add ons didn’t explain that the community tab should be on. And I don’t have all the add ons so the “tab” actions is not available for me. Tell us where to access things instead of relying on add ons.
Are you using latest Blender version? Tab actions should be available by default in latest version
Glad you were able to finish it, apologies for the fast pace
Que bien gracias.
You are welcome 😊

Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻
wow thats smart way
Thank you, I am glad you liked it
8:40 no. Not well explained
I could get it at all! it is sooooo hard :(
I am so sorry to hear that, can you tell me the problem you are facing?
Its too bad they don't have a pin tool like in AE
yeah, a very little cost to pay for having a free software.
couldn't you just add the images as planes add-on? then you could just import the image as a plane and not have to go through all those steps :D
Hey tucker certainly you could, both ways have advantages and disadvantages, you can find the other way in this video
th-cam.com/video/6Qn__oU__DI/w-d-xo.html
Alt + f shows "!no faces filled"
Make sure you have pressed "m" first while selecting all vertices and using merged by distance, then try using Alt+F again
You can also just press F and then use the shortcut Ctrl+T to triangulate the face which will get you same result as Alt+F
If that didn't work also, you might need to recreate the outline vertices ..
@@RG3DAnimationstudio yes, I had to recreate with less dots, then it works... thank you!
way too fast :(
I am sorry to hear that, please try this 1, it has the same info except for the Gimp part. th-cam.com/video/H2AKBEDzXuA/w-d-xo.html
I just wish you'd redub this video with a clearer, accent-free narrator.
I am sorry to hear that, unfortunately the accent is something I can't fix easily, let me know which part you are stuck in, maybe I can help.
