- This next Character Profiler is of a character that was only on a short time but left an impact on the show for many more years to come. Annie Dutton was slowly introduced to fans as a nurse at Cedars. Once she became romantically involved with Josh Lewis, then there was barely a day we didn't see her. Annie seemed normal until Reva fought for Josh and made Annie's psychotic tendencies surface. The first actress who played Annie, Cynthia Watros, won over fans as good & bad Annie. Cynthia Watros helped fill the void when Michael Zaslow took ill. Another one of Guiding Light's many mistakes was letting her her leave.
This was amazing!!! Annie is what got me hooked on Guiding Light. She's definitely one of my favorite characters ever. And Cynthia Watros was just perfect, she made you feel compassion for Annie even when she was doing crazy things.
Cynthia Watros did incredible work for GL.

Seems like Reva brought almost all the trouble on herself. If she'd left Annie alone and moved on with her life, then Annie wouldn't have lashed out at her so many times. That whole stunt of disrupting Alan and Annie's wedding was nothing but pure spite.
You're my whole spirit! Reva brought everything upon herself and then blamed everyone else for her comeuppance.
@@aphillyate1 Exactly! As a fan of Guiding Light, I will always appreciate what Reva's character meant for the show. However, I was just never a big fan of the character. I loved her sisters Roxie and Cassie much more than I ever did her character. Still, I do appreciate her contributions to the show. It was love, at first sight, with Cynthia Watros. Loved me some Annie Dutton. and yes, disrupting Annie's wedding to Alan when she was trying to move on was pure spite.
@@hshawn00 Reva's entire being was spite. It's why she came to town, dumped Josh, tried to marry Kyle, hid Dylan as a baby, got with Josh and dumped Josh, came back to life, ruined untold amounts of lives...etc.
@@aphillyate1 Lol, you are so right about all of what you said. I would watch the show here and there in her early years but I didn't become a regular watcher of the show until 1989 and 1990 during the story where Chelsea and Johnny were being stalked by the crazed fan. I did see Reva drive her car off the bridge because it happened during the summer and I was out of school. Before, I would only catch the last 30 minutes after I made it home from school. I purchased a VCR in 1990 and started recording the episodes. Therefore, I missed a lot of Reva until she returned in the mid-'90s. I'd enjoyed the show so much without her because it became an ensemble without her. As soon as Reva returned, it became her show again. I've also had a chance to see her earlier work thanks to youtube uploaders. I found her to be really grating in her earlier years but much more enjoyable during the late eighties.
@@hshawn00 likewise, I started watching in early 90. She was on her way out and drove off the bridge. That's when GL became spectacular viewing! The decline was when TPTB became obsessed with her.
Great video! I loved Annie Dutton once she turned bad! She started out as a ho-hum character and after they decided to turn her from alcoholic to devious, she was just magic to watch on screen. Cynthia Watros earned her Emmy for this role. (The replacement Annie I felt was miscast and did not inhabit the role as Cynthia did). I keep hoping to see CW make it big onscreen.
He think she blew it with the drinking problem she had. She was on lost and I think that was her chance then but all that with the accident ruined it. Then she returned back to soaps
I think Cynthia was one of the best actresses that Guiding Light had. I wanted to go to the Guiding Light Fan Club for the annual bowling event and the dinner and autograph session they had in New York. But I had no money to travel there. This was in 1996 when Cynthia was there.

I loved good Annie and remember thinking how bad it was they were making her bad. Then I realized bad Annie was a thousand times better. It was so awesome to tune in and see what crazy thing she'd do next.
I actually NEVER EVER blamed Annie. Sure she did crappy things...but Josh pretty much threw her away like trash! I always wanted to just hug Annie and tell her it would be ok. I really wish that I could find DVDs of GL with all the Annie Storylines.

I never liked Reba or her sister cassie. Annie was a great evil woman
great character...it was interesting to see her go from good hearted nurse to obessed wife to down right crazy! Watrous made the part...Coleman is wonderful - but her signature part is Hope on Y&R. GL should have just left the character alone when Watrous left.

One of the best unintentional moments of TV was when Josh asked where the hell was Annie Dutton and the very next moment was Cynthia Watros in a commercial. You can't write that magic. 😂

It was utterly amazing how Cynthia Wattros transformed Annie from a genuine heroine to an out-right villainess to be reckoned with. She so deserved that daytime Emmy award. Thanks for the upload.

great video. annie protrayed by Cynthia Watrous was the best thing about GL during these years. It was a horrible mistake with their recasted Annie. She did not half the talent of CW. She basically turned bad after Reva came back and Josh wanted Reva back..blah blah. I am the one out a million who didn't like Reva and wish she would have left. Wish they would have kept Annie and got rid of Reva
And took the rest of the Shane clan with her

Executive producer Paul Rauch is the reason she didn't stay. While PR made the show look grand onscreen, what was happening behind the scenes were nearly horrific. RIP Michael Zaslow
I'm with ya; her name is Cynthia Watros. She's been in Titus and LOST, but no role touches the crazy and comedy she brought to GL as Annie. I wish i was in the movie biz, because there are some actors that are SO good from this show that just need a chance to shine on the big screen. Glad they have some immortality on youtube in the meantime.
gather you aren't one of the many Reva fans. Annie Dutton was a great character, CW was a fantastic actress. I always wanted Reva and Josh to get together and leave Springfield and NEVER come back. I couldn't stand Reva.
Wow, thought I was in the minority. It's not that I hated Kim Zimmer or the character and I also appreciated what she brought to the show, I just didn't connect with the actress. I always loved her sisters. Roxie Shayne was one of my favorite characters and I also loved Cassie. I'm sorry but Kim Zimmer was just overrated in my opinion. No disrespect to any of her fans because I know how I hate it when people hate my favorites.
It wasnt the same when Annie left
She never totally gave up her goodness. She saved Abby from the fire and the kids from Holly when she was the NRS & Annie could have escaped free & clear if she hadn't done that. She never gets credit for that & no one not Josh, not Marah, or Shayne admit that they loved her. I love you clips that start small & jump bigger & the image of Annie going through all the colors was really fitting.
Annie was my favorite character - I especially loved when she was drunk.
Cynthia Watros was so fun to watch.

Cynthia Watros was excellent in this role. The one mistake they made with the character was trying to bring her back with another actress - didn't work.

Watros is a great actress. She certainly should have been offered more roles. Knowing what we all know now about such things, it may be a huge testament to her character.

I absolutely loved Annie and Cynthia Watros. I was always team Annie. Why Joh ever picked Reva over Annie amazes me. Reva brought most of this on herself, Best times on GL were when Reva was gone. Annie shoudve had Josh's heart but like always every character had to take second place for Queen Reva
what man in his right sober mind would leave that gorgeous blonde for REVA. Talk about going from the rose garden to the dumpster.

Annie passing out at the trial was one of GL greatest moments. I loved the GL of the 90s.
I love a woman who fights dirty for what she wants because that is real..being a dull pretty floozie with no fight in you or personality is BS and insulting! Annie needs to be back!! There's something about that actress I've seen her in other roles she rules the screen!
Loved Annie's transformation from good girl to bad girl. I thought it would have made more sense to do a Who Killed Annie story when Watros left though. That would have been way better than the silly clone story and bringing the character back with plastic surgery.
Also, did Rick know Annie was married before? Reva finding that husband to ruin Annie and Alans wedding seemed out of the blue to me.

Annie went crazy, but Jeva drove her to it. My favorite Annie-Josh story was when "ghost" Reva haunted them at Cross Creek. She really needed psychological help from this whole Reva "pushed" her down the stairs ploy on. Harley really should have felt bad about lying to Annie. Most of the revenge Jeva deserved. I didn't like how they made Alan all about Annie though because Alan was really always all about Hope. I liked that Alan knew Annie by her kiss. He could give a few other soap men lessons.

Blair Cramer from ONE LIFE TO LIVE, Kristen Blake from DAYS OF OUR LIVES and Annie Dutton are the three characters that pulled me into soaps in the mid 90s.
Hahahahah. Reva's plane crashed and she landed on an island. Just like how later, Annie/Libby's plane would crash and she would land on an island (LOST). Ah, it all comes around again/.
I liked the last time Reva thought Annie was after her, but she really was too far gone that time and was happily living in a mental institution thinking she was married to Josh. Josh never should have married her after he knew Reva was alive, that really was cruel & Phillip who was her best friend betrayed her for the sake of a girl. I wish Annie & Reva really had been sisters it would have been just desserts.
I'm sorry Alan. Really all these videos with Alan, he can be bad sometimes but really the only thing that I usually end up saying is "I'm sorry Alan"

Yeah I love Watros' acting. I try to catch her in all/other other roles. She has this charisma or something. I forget what the tv show/series was called but I saw her as the office bimbo who sleeps around in some Tv series and a serial killer or demented guy kidnapped her and made a mask of her face while she was still alive. It was years ago but that's the scene that I remember. : )

When they recast and Teri returned - they made a mistake with casting Signy Coleman…. It had come down to Teresa Blake - Gloria/AMC and Coleman for the role ! Teresa Blake could have taken ANNIE to another planet with her portrayal if given the chance !

I thought I was the only one!!!! The show was so great while she was gone because it didn't focus on one character but it became an ensemble. Reva's character ate up too much of the screen time and the writers never understood how to write for the character after Pamela K. Long left. They thought putting her in one ridiculous plot after the next was the way to go.

YES!!!!!! Dont know what was so great about a woman who had every single member of the Lewis family including the father and even the half brother and then when she tired of them decided to have every man in Springfield. Then when Cassie came on we had two Shayne women to deal with. That is why I stopped watching. Then would start watching again when Reva was gone but she never stayed away long enough

Innocent? Really? Remember her first husband? She stole drugs,faked her death,let her husband go to prison, let a man lay dying on the road while drunk with her lover, treated Rick like garbage, lied to Josh over and over, from the start. She started out possibly loving Josh,then it became an obsession, was ok with the kids but did NOT raise Shane. But didn't mind one bit to use them when it served her purpose. Never once cared how her crazy antics was going to affect them. Just kept spewing hate at Reva,so of course Reva is going to spew it back. Was happy when the kids hated or were scared of their own Mom. Couldn't stand it when they started warming up to Reva and calling her Mama. And Reva didn't leave for 5 years on purpose. She had a breakdown and drove off a bridge. Had amnesia for all that time. She tried to do what she thought was best for Josh and her kids. She got blasted for that and she got blasted for staying. As a parent,could any of you stand by and watch your own kids being turned against you? The adults were running on high emotions and not thinking clearly. But Annie was always ready and willing to stoke the fire and put every ounce of blame on Reva. Everything Annie did was blamed on someone else. She made her own choices,own mistakes, and not once could she own up to them. Always someone else's fault. That's a pathetic way to go through life. She dug her own holes. The only time i felt sorry for her was when she had to have the hysterectomy. But given her declining mental state and obsessions,it was probably a good thing. She lost her temper several times with Tammy and once with Mara cause they didn't say what she wanted to hear. I don't feel sorry for anyone that refuses to take responsibility for their own actions. And if none of you have ever had a love like Josh and Reva, i feel sorry for you. Yes,they made mistakes too,but owned up to them. As for ruining Annie and Alan's wedding,it wasn't even legal in the first place. Alan was in love but Annie wanted money and power. Mostly to ruin the Lewis family. Mara and Shane included. She made no secret of that. Reva did what she had to do to protect her family from a vindictive couple. Annie was still obsessed with Josh. Right up until the end. Yeah, we've all made mistakes and made wrong choices. But owned up to them and moved on. I liked the Annie character and Cynthia Watros. That was a great story line and she was a good villian. Cynthia left the show on her own because she wanted to do other things. She didn't want to come back,so they brought in the other woman. Still obsessed with Josh btw. I didn't like any of that story line. Last time we saw Annie,she was in a mental hospital thinking she was still with JOSH, not Alan. Wonder what happened to her after Alan died? I don't think Alexandra would have continued to pay for her accommodations. Lol. And remember,it was just a soap opera.
