I think that the apple had to do with the incestuous feelings between him and Thomasin, She said she wanted an apple when they were cuddling/tickle fighting after she caught him looking at her cleavage. And there was a bite taken out of the apple, which if you remember, she pretended to bite Caleb when they were play fighting.

    • @highfae
      @highfae ปีที่แล้ว

what do you mean by that? it was witches, or at least this film’s definition (which is an extension of how the Puritans defined them), in both stories, that selfishly put their own desires over everything else, which leads to the suffering of all those around them- even the object of their affections (and themselves since they will discover they’ll never be satisfied this way, they can only reap what they sow; even fine food will be ashes in their mouths, etc., it will never be enough because the selfish impulse that says _others must suffer so I can get what I want_ comes OUT of a deep lack of alignment with their true natures and what they truly desire). In the Crucible, the only people that should have suffered were the ones actually performing witchcraft, who caused innocents to die in their stead…. if the whole village had devolved into hysteria and killed each other, over the selfish lusts of a few girls, you would have been happier with that film/play? 🤔

That show actually accurately depicts the occult and history of the occult and they show the devil as being in black goat form as well. And in the last two seasons as a handsome man. I just rewatched this last night, the first time I watched it was in 2016, and i missed parts. From rewatching it 3x last night, every scene is vital to understanding the story. It’s most definitely my new favorite scary movie. Glad I rewatched it.

Caleb talking about the animals as he dies is not him trying to warn them about specific creatures. That scene was about "Spectral Evidence". Basically, it was thought a witch could harm a targeted person "spectrally", i.e. by sending her spirit to torment them. Most commonly, the torment was physical, such as making them feel as if they were being pricked, stabbed, or crushed, or visually, by showing them things. Preventing them from speaking, especially to say prayers, was also a common spectral evidence thing.
Only the afflicted would be able to see this specter, which often took the form of an animal or familiar (and all of the animals Caleb lists are common familiars, or considered to have weird powers themselves). The twins are likewise being targeted or put under influence, since they say they can't say the Lord's Prayer and are being attacked (they are NOT "possessed by the devil"). The Salem Witch Trials allowed for Spectral Evidence, which basically lead to a bunch of hysterical teenagers rolling around on the ground, claiming they're being attacked by spectral birds or being stabbed with needles, while the witch they were accusing of doing it all would just be standing there, or not even present. A lot of Caleb's lines are pulled directly from court transcripts of people giving spectral evidence.
The mom is not "betwitched". She signed the book, which makes her a witch. That's how that works. Her feeding the crow is indeed a reference to a "witch's teat" which is a special mark all witches have, which they use to feed their familiars. While it was supposed to look like a third nipple hidden somewhere random on the body, eventually any mole or scar on a person's body was seen as a possible, secretive witch's teat, and 'proof' the person was a witch. Despite basically everyone having at least one mole or scar.

Wow Ok, I totally thought she had an affair on her husband, and I looked it up in IMDb and it said that she cheated on William, but ppl on Reddit said that she didn't love him so she felt that their baby Samuel was an child born of infidelity? That actress plays some annoying ppl between the chick on Game of Thrones(who was still breastfeeding her "far from a baby son" and was jealous over her teenage niece, but in this movie she's jealous over her daughter.....yet, she has Thomasin unbuttoning her dad's shirt as if he couldn't undress himself or his wife couldn't do it)and I just got a whole bunch of jealousy from her also because William defended his daughter a lot? I'm a Child Molestation survivor and I tend to get triggered over things real easy especially, when children are involved, so it's most likely just me but I got uneasy sexual undertones from Thomasin and William's relationship starting with how she took off his shirt? It made me cringe for her, Idk?

@@faithruckdeschel1294 there was nothing incestuous about Thomesan and William. Women back.then would regularly perform acts like that for the patriarch of the family. It speaks more to the corrupt in Kathrine that she delegated the task of seeing to William's needs to her eldest daughter (instead of seeing to it herself) and seemingly being resentful toward her daughter for it. If anything incestuous was going on it was on Kathrine's end because she was showing signs of envy toward her own daughter who had reached physical maturity. Kathrine's sin was particularly ugly.

Men may fear witches because they possess a power and knowledge that challenges traditional gender roles and societal norms. 🔮🔥💪 Witches are often depicted as independent, cunning, and unafraid to speak their minds - characteristics that can be intimidating to those who are used to being in positions of power and control. Additionally, the history of witch persecution and the portrayal of witches in media as evil, manipulative beings has perpetuated a fear and mistrust of them.
But fear not, dear men! Embracing the magic and wisdom of witches can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you. So next time you feel that twinge of fear, remember that witches are not here to harm you, but to empower you to tap into your own inner strength and intuition. 🌟🌿 #DontFearTheWitch #EmbraceTheMagic #WitchyWisdom

The concept is actually known as "The Rule of Three," and it's a Wiccan thing. The witches that the Puritans believed haunted their lives were not Wiccan, they were supposed servants of Satan. Wicca has no "Satan" or other Ultimate Evil incarnate, and thus it is that a person's own malicious doings will return upon them threefold. But again, the witch of this film is no Wiccan, and thus isn't beholden to their belief.

the witch trails where a very dark part of history... but my favorite story is the one of Giles Corey, who in 1692 was accused of being a witch and then pressed to death by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts when he refused to enter a plea to the charge... they crushed him to death... ordered him to confess... but all he ever said was "more weight"...

The story about Giles Corey is pretty cool, but I always loved the one about Sarah Good and the Reverend Nicholas Noyes. Good continued to profess her innocence, even as she was awaiting execution. Noyes continued to try to force a confession, but she refused and it's said she told him "I'm no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink!" Noyes would later die of some sort of hemorrhage, choking on his own blood...so it appears that God _did_ in fact give him blood to drink.

Okay, not to nitpick, buuuttt... It's Not "Thoma - SINE" - it's Thoma - SIN. They say her name a lot. Also, Katherine doesn't enter through a window - she is getting up out of bed. She's obviously in her nightclothes, and the curtain is around the bed, because the parent's bed is in the main room on the first floor. And (I'm sure someone else has mentioned this), the witch doesn't "possess" Black Phillip - he is the actual devil (or demon) disguised as the goat.

Am i the only one that thinks thomasin was in on it the whole time? She clearly was more aware of what was happening than everyone else...
    1. When she scares mercy by the lake she mentions very specific details concerning witchcraft and the devil and does so quite passionately. It comes off as one of those "hidden in plain sight" sort of lies, where someone outright tells the truth in a dramatic way in attempt to make you not take it seriously
    2. In the beginning when she is praying/confessing i think shes doing so AFTER Samuel was taken, and she does so out of fear that maybe her unpure acts of "breaking commandments in thought" may have had something to do with it. Either way she does appear a bit guilty; also in the scene when shes cleaning the goats barn and hears jonas and mercy sing the black philip song, she stops everything shes doing and stares into nothingness... then leaves to go to where samuel was taken and stares into the woods ominously... see my question is why would black philip remind her of samuel being taken... no one had made that connection until later on in the film... shes the only character that drew any connection between black phillip and everyone going missing/dying that early on...
    3. I dont think she made a deal with anyone prior to all of this but i definitely think she had a clearer idea of what was actually going on before anyone else and chose to stay silent through it all. And i think her reasons for staying silent are obvious, she wanted to live the good life. She missed england and often reminisced about "the glass windows" and how "it was pretty," similiar to when the devil tempts her with the "pretty dress." She knew there was something supernatural going on which is why she always got very tense whenever Mercy would mention witches, especially in relation to her. At the end of the day, thomasin chose to stay silent throughout these events because she knew that the "delicious" life she had always wanted was now within reach, and was caught in a crossroads on which path to chose
    4. She resented everyone in the family. Except caleb, of course, which explains why she never cries when any of her family members die EXCEPT caleb. When her mother attacked her at the end, the mother didn't necessarily look like she was doing anything that violent other then trying to slap her around, when they were on the ground. But of course, then thomasin grabs a whole ass steak knife and slices the fuck out of her face... and then on top of that, you can see that thomasins reaction after doing so is completely calm... she doesnt even appear shocked that she just sliced her moms face in half. And ONLY THEN does the mom attempt to kill thomasin, most likely out of fear of getting killed first
Everywhere i look, people see thomasin as the most innocent of the characters even tho she was literally who the devil and the witch had their eyes on the whole time. They sabotaged the family to get to her... as they Probably had done with many of the other witches in their coven. Its like an initiation. At the end of the movie after her whole family is dead all she does is take a nap... like wtf... and then wakes up and "signs the devils book" AKA has sex with him (thats what it meant in folklore of the time). In fact, when she admits her illiteracy by saying "i cant write my name" that was basically her saying the she was a virgin, and the devils response "i will guide thy hand" is him telling her to just follow his lead.
I dont think she was completely guilty, not at all, but she definitely played a larger part in her familys demise than people are mentioning. And its proven at the end of the movie when she choses to side with the very people that haunted and killed her entire family
I mean is it rocket science....?

Problem is that witches are real. People who sell their soul to the Devil are real. Unfortunately when Christianity was started to be accepted by Europeans, many of these demon/devil worshippers went underground and were allowed to grow and expand. Movies like this should never ever be made in the first place but unfortunately Hollywood is so demonic.

Im generally not a horror fan because nowadays a lot of horror that is very popular and comes from big production seems cheap to me. I think Eggers style of writing and directing falls right on the border between indie/arthouse and „big enough production to not look like shit“. Combining originality with big names and budgets. I’m a big fan and I can’t wait to see what he produces in the future, he really does his homework on the topics he writes about. Also the child actor playing Caleb was INSANE to me, i got chills watching the death scene, he is definitely going places in the industry and I’m hoping he makes it big, that kid has TALENT.

Interesting fact, one idea of where the mythology of witches came from in Europe js medieval brewer women. They would famously wear a pointed hat. Brewing of beer requires the boiling of water, so they would often be seen stirring a large cauldron over a fire. Brewing beer requires grain which can attract rodents, so they would often have a cat with them. The grain can also spill and create a mess, so they would often have a broom nearby and at the ready.
