  • Hyndluljóð / Vǫluspá in skamma is a mysterious poem about the Norse gods from the manuscript Flateyjarbók, and is often included in the Poetic Edda.
    Dr. Jackson Crawford is a historical linguist and an experienced teacher of both Old Norse and Modern Icelandic. He currently teaches in the Department of Scandinavian at the University of California, Berkeley (formerly at UCLA), and as of August 2017 he will be teaching at the University of Colorado Boulder.     I noticed when I read the poem that Freya refers to Hyndla as her sister, while Njord is stated to have nine daughters in total of whom only Freya, Radveig and Kreppvor are named, so might it not be plausible that Hyndla isn't a giantess but a vanir?

    This poem reminds me of Irish mythology by its weirdness alone. Is there any possible influences as it does seem out of place next to most of Norse mythology.

    "Freyja rides a hog" makes me think of a modern AU where Freyja is a biker chick.

      he's a university teacher, its a good way to speak tactfully when conveying something you want a broad audience to understand. speculation of course as i'm no professor.
