The Battle of Tulifurdum [Total War: Attila battle replay]

  • Tulifurdum, 428AD.
    When the Franks and their Burgundian allies declared war on Rome, the empire was ready. Four fully provisioned legions crossed the Rhine in unison, each conquering a different settlement within the season. Forced on the defensive, and knowing that their armies were no match for the legions, the Frankish generals unified their forces into a single roaming horde almost 9000 strong.
    This horde now has Legio III encircled in Tulifurdum. The settlement's supplies are low, and the defences are still half-destroyed from the Roman conquest. In a desperate, or perhaps overconfident move, Spurius Traianus sends Legio II to break the siege, and meets the Franks in the field. 3700 Romans face off against 9000 Franks; the legions have superior training and equipment, but is that enough against such overwhelming numbers?

    Been a while since I uploaded a regular old battle replay, and some people were asking for more, so here you go! This is one of the largest battles of the entire West Rome Legendary campaign, and was a bit of a risky gamble on my part. You can’t command this many troops effectively without automating or simplifying as much as possible, which is why I don’t pick targets for my onagers and why my infantry formations get more and more chaotic as the battle progresses.
    For future replays, I was thinking of adding a small text box in the corner of the screen outlining my thoughts and strategy throughout the battle, is that something you’d like to see or would it just make things more visually messy?

I don’t use missiles unless I am playing a faction with good quality horse archers or the Sassanids, never found them that useful on the battlefield once I unlock large onagers.

      @@nms8397 low player base is in my opinion relevant if we speak about UNDERRATED totalwar games.
      and i didnt found poor reviews of actual competent players of this game. the first review for me was the warhammer2-cheese-god,...its kinda sad, but i don't trust his values beyond warhammer, because this is 99% of his content on his channel, dont need to see it, he dont want us to play something else except warhammer....... the next review claimed, that he loved Attila and hated Napoleon (bullshit opinion, both were great games) the third review claimed, that he hates Attila and thats why he hates ToB too, because its just a reskin. (bullshit opinion)
      in my view not the total-war-games got worse....the reviews became straight up bad and just about insulting a game without playing it (s. Rome 2 hate) as a game. these people didnt played the game, they buyed the "next failed Total-War game" for their "next" angry review video and than played that has-to-be-shitty game and try to find some kind of critic.
      i mean, if you want to truly argue about a "lack of diversity of the units" by ToB, maybe you should look at Shogun2, who had significant LESS UNITS than ToB. Ashigaru-spam left and right. noone gave a fuck, because they won the game easily.
      Shogun 2 started the cinematic battle scene stuff, that got HATED so much in Attila. Noone cared about it in Shogun 2.
      Shogun 2 has some of the worse DLCs, who are even worse than DLCs in Rome 2. Noon gave a fuck about it.
      Shogun 2 has smaller black stripes after arrows too and people described it as beautiful...
      in my point of view OUR feed-back on Shogun 2 TO THIS DAY lead to the biggest problems of modern total-wars after shogun 2 and the fanbase is constantly looking away at this continuity from shogun2 to modern games by their feedbacks.
      in my opinion ToB has less players, because most players played the game and lost after 20 turns by rebellions. and they were not able to handle to loose in a total war game. Hint: there are mods, just use the loyalty cheat mod and you have zero rebellions.....but today-totalwar gamers are not able to accept, that maybe they need a mod to enjoy the shit out of a game.
      i can use bugs in rome total war too....its just not fun to use them. these people constantly complain about an error, until its no longer fun to play the game for everyone....than they are happy.

    Two mistakes that increased your casualties more than necessary.
    1. The onagers were auto-targeting the crossbowmen, and inflicted minor casualties. Since your infantry can form testudo and basically ignore ranged attacks, this made the onagers ineffective. Softening up the enemy infantry would've been better and more effective as they are more densily packed (even in loose formation).
    2. After the first wave was broken, you should've reformed a line with the infantry. Since it was mostly only crossbows and cav left, forming infantry in line and testudo would've drastically decreased casualties and increased their effectiveness against the enemy cav. It would also lessen the amount of micro-management necessary, and you would be able to focus on cav movements more.
    Your casualties could probably have been reduced by 30-50% by these things.
    Additionally, a minor grudge is how the cav was bunched up a bit too much. Attacking one unit with six cav units is overkill and tangles the units up, making it harder to disengage.

    Wow, controlling 2 full stacks on legendary is beyond what I can do. Although it seems the AI is doing its part to help. Fighting in 2 directions at once is not really its strong suit it seems. It didn't even put up a screening force to guard its rear so you were able to just ride down the general. I was wondering why you don't use groups though? When I foray into playing legendary control groups are a must, plus group attack orders make it easier to order an entire line of units to charge and pick their own targets

    • @arielespoir8612
      @arielespoir8612 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because Yrridian based his strategy on mobility and gangbanging and unit groups don't help with that. The battle tends to devolve into a messy brawl anyway and unit groups would severely limit flanking choices.

    Ok this is quite good and I'll try to find some actual tactics used in real wars and pls correct or fill in if any grievous mistakes:
    1: Artillery and main army positions on an elevated ground for better defence and a greater line of fire
    2: Using a smaller detachment to deploy behind enemy lines
    3: Hiding your main cavalry detachment for surprise attacks on the flanking enemy cavalry
    4: Isolating and killing an overconfident general running ahead of his own troops for demoralising and denying the enemy proper leadership (dunno if he was the one caught by the cavalry of your second army or the one trying to flank your main army)
    5: Using the main army on the hill as bait until the enemy is committed and does not have fast-moving units to threaten your second onager group
    6: Using the second army to draw some enemy infantry from the assault on the main army, dividing the "anvil" on the main force (enemy cavalry as the hammer) and saving the main army from focused assault by superior numbers
    7: Multiple uses of defeat in detail (using a larger force to crush individual smaller armies) and preserving a strong cavalry core for pursuing
    8: Using the second onager group to hammer the reforming enemy lines
    All in all, a very good battle and very entertaining to analyze :)
    P.S. Also is the battle music from Atilla? If so could you tell me pls what track?

I personally think that western rome has potentially the worst cav in the game, but they do have really good range options and very flexible melee units. I love their javelin units so much, because they double as an anti large spear unit up close so i just put them on the flanks as they shred horsies. It works every time.

      I usually keep 1 or 2 cav in every army to clean up ranged. Even scout equites get the job done. The AI will rush all their cav into your testimudo wall early in the battle leaving your weak ass scout equites as the only mobile units left. Their back line is only ranged after they commit everything so cav can crush it and hammer/anvil charge the back of their infantry if needed

    Just wondering, am I silly or are the onagers targeting the spread out skirmish units instead of the infantry behind them at the start of the battle before the infantry meets the first time? If so, I'd love to know why you choose that, I always target the heaviest infantry in range so I'd love to know if there's a better alternative.

      He was just letting the onagers target anything by themselves mostly he needed to focus on the reinforment army and the calvary.

      @@thatrandomguy8115 well he was just admiring the shots landing and using the ability on them, so I figgured there was more too it than that. Still, could be the case like you say.

    9:01 - how to move a unit through a point?

  • @sasi5841

    I just finished the grand campaign on legendary with divine Triumph. Damn it was hard. I thought it would be smooth sailing after destroying the Huns, but nope, the difficulty increased afterward. Western Rome willingly wanted to be a puppet state, but as soon as I got dragged into a conflict with Burgundy to defend Illyria (one of my puppets), western Rome as well as every single factions in the east (all of which aren't puppets) declared war on me. Meaning the economy crippled and being invaded on all sides while almost my entire army and navy was in the north.

    • @sasi5841
      @sasi5841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was playing as ERE. An advice i have would be to avoid having puppets. The while secede eventually regardless of how much money you give them previously.

    • @Yrridian
      @Yrridian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sasi5841 Yeah making new puppet states is almost never worth it. I got really lucky in my West Rome game with how loyal my puppets were, but even then the last ~20 years of my campaign was just me funneling huge amounts of gold to them every turn to keep them loyal once the wars ended.

    • @sasi5841
      @sasi5841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Yrridian the game said that my puppets were loyal and reliable with green face on diplomacy, but they still decided to secede and invade undefended territory.

    How historic was it to have so many onagers? I would guess that an army moving into Germany would have one at most given the difficulty of hostile terrain.

    • @jumapl9706
      @jumapl9706 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol like none? Onagers are siege equipment, they were build in the middle of the siege, irl only scorpions/balistas/polyboss would be actually helpfull on the field battle.
