I dont know why but this video made me want to bring out the flag 🇨🇦!
I grew up in Yarmouth Nova Scotia, as a teen I spent my time in the local sea cadet Corps. We often visited the Legion since they were our main supporters, often the legionares would tell us stories. I've heard that Shelburne and Lunenburg often had German U-boat sailors would come ashore to enjoy a meal and a beverage
I've heard something similar too about Halifax that tour operators have mentioned. Apparently some German Submariners were picked up somewhere off the coast and once searched, had ticket stubs from a movie theatre in Halifax the night before... I don't know if it's true, but I've heard it a couple of times.
I grew up on Briar Island in the Bay of Fundy. During WWII fishermen from the area would sometimes find bodies floating at sea. Possibly the result of Uboat action against convoys in the area.
ate at the foc's'le, pretty good food.
Great video Chris. 👍🏻 I enjoyed this.
What a cool way to market yourself.
did not know there were so many melnyks in the maritimes
My Dad who grew up in Guysborough NS and used to talk about a "secret" Canadian military base and German U Boats.
That's pretty cool. I'll look into it. Thanks
Pretty sure Gesner also invented asphalt.
Oh, and foc's'le has a hard O.
Good catch. Oddly enough, people I've spoken to have said it with a soft O, but I've googled it and you're right.
Here are a couple of more weird facts about Nova Scotia. 1) Nova Scotia was once Africa or vice versa, depending on your point of view. When the supercontinent Pangea split up the area on what is now the south shore was attached to what is now Africa. 2) During WWII, Weymouth was the only maritime location that built Fairmiles. The Fairmile was a British designed motor torpedo boat. The Fairmiles built in Weymouth went on to serve in the Royal Canadian Navy and the U.S. Navy. One is still afloat as a super yacht based in Savannah Georgia U.S.A. 3) The largest wooden structure in North America (and second largest in the world) is located in Pointe Claire N.S.. The church "L'Egilse Ste, Marie, was built over 2 years by 1600 local artisans. The man in charge of its construction could neither read nor write. BTW It is up for sale.
Wow, those are some very interesting facts. Would you mind if I include some of those in future videos? (I'll give you credit of course).
