    Overnight from Japan? The price of shipping has gotten insane. I paid $28 to get a couple of 50-cent laptop MOSFETs in 4 days from China to my home in Thailand. The alternative was delivery in October. Nice easy fix.

    Congrats on the most cringeworthy episode yet! I have my doubts on that double-sided tape though. When Hector has so much torque that his chassis twists coming off the line, that VR just might turn loose. As it does, he’ll be screaming MONICAAAH!

      Floor boards will fall off before this VR does!

      I had too, as soon as I opened the can the cats started screaming "Monica!".

    Nice upgrade, but I doubt it needs that kind of current. Isn't more likely some voltage spike or reverse hookup blew the original LM?

      I'm going with inductive kickback.

    Hello
    I saw your amazing technique
    So I'm fixing the autometer now too. The transistor is broken. Does this part number look familiar to you? CEN901ECB, no matter how much I look, I don't know.

    That linear regulator wastes so much power that he's going to lose every race.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. But that PCB was only drawing like 60mA so linear should be an ok match.

    Put a diode in series with the power input wire, stop your frend reversing the power polarity. Only 0.7v drop. (The regulator wont care and 700mv will lighten the regulator dissipation).
    Sorry im being obvious again!.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I assumed it was inductive kick back that killed it and not reverse polarity. If it fails again I'll try that.

      @zx8401ztv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffescortlx i was going for the typical cause of death, people reversing power for a split second before realising there mistake.
      People often don't tell the whole truth untill you give them a list of causes lol.
      Browning around the regulator pcb?, too hot, ouch!, alternator outputting way higher than 14 volts, too much for the regulator to dissipate the heat.
      You could be right about inductive kickback, but it would have to be a large inductor, like the coil in a large relay.
      But a catch diode would have to be across the relay coil to stop hell breaking loose 😀
      There should be few capacitors on the regulator input down to negative, that should absorb most spikes.
      Sorry im saying the obvious, ill shut up lol.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zx8401ztv vehicles are full of large inductors, besides relays and solenoids: starter motor, electric radiator fan, electric water pump, fuel pump, power windows, power locks, windshield wipers. I believe typically the accessory circuit is briefly disconnected from power while the starter motor is turning. But many people when they modify a car with aftermarket electronics they don't wire into the accessory circuit, they wire directly to the battery that has no protection while the starter motor is working.
