    Okay, the visitor is the boy in the house. He is the boy, but grown up. He is trapped in this parallel world. He is going back to warn the boy and his mother about the abuse his father subjected them to. That's why they talk about infinity and the endless loop. He didn't want to go into the dad's room because dad is abusive. We see evidence of this at the end. He looks at the whole house, but never sees his sister. WHY? Where is she? She is in the basement, presumably being punished for something. Mother feels distraught because while she never punished her kids like that, she allowed her husband to do so.

      haha, glad you enjoyed it. The actor we got was very "dad", it was soooo hard getting him to try and sound tough. This was peak meanness for this man.

    I didn't understand the last part when the father stares at the ceiling. Did he saw a ghost or something?

    • @hunternmoore7070
      @hunternmoore7070  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Admittedly that part was left to be interpretive. The silhouette up near the ceiling was a statuette on the property. When we were lighting the scene, I decided to leave it in shadows and let people's imaginations do the rest. We didn't really have the resources to apply any additional VFXs to the scene so it seems a fair compromise creatively speaking.

    I still don't understand the story. I've read it over and over but I just don't get the meaning. I am guessing that they are all dead and the man the comes reminds them that they are dead too. Please help me. I'm trying to write a paper about it.

      +Haley Holthaus The story is largely metaphorical, so the specifics and literal event are vague. Oates writes a lot of Gothic Horror, so I would recommend reviewing tropes of that genre to get a better context of the story.
      From what I can tell, the story is about a husband and wife that died sometime ago, dying still unwilling to reconcile with the troubles they faced in life. The husband are physically abusive, and the wife emotionally abusive, and we can sermonize this has something to with their children, as the stranger says, "two children, why? But you love them of course. Else, it would all come to an end" This implies that the children are what is perpetuating this "limbo", this dream after death that is keeping them from moving on to either heaven or hell. The daughter is mentioned, yet absent, and the son's room has some connection to the Stranger. Furthermore, the Stranger is specifically disgusted with the other rooms, perhaps because they do not exist in this limbo.
      The stranger is a metaphor as well, not any specific being, but a manifestation of anxiety, worry, tragedy, and abuse. The stranger embraced a tragic past, and hates those things that make the house "seem" nice, he hates the facade. He reflects the story of the Couple, notably given no names. In this, he illustrates the indirect effects of an abusive relationship. This is general, however, and is meant to be open the viewers own experiences.
      In the end, the stranger is kicked out, though his presence is still felt. It is open to the viewer what happens next, do they eventually return to the lie, accept the past and move on, or inevitably succumb to hell. My take, in attempting to move this story from purely metaphor to a direct narrative, is they are hopeless souls, and in light of the events of the short story (and this adaptation) are forced to move on. However, given that they still cannot accept that they lived sinful lives and thus die still defending those sins, they fall to hell.
      ANYWAY, holy mother of exposition, I hope that helps somehow.

      +Hunter Moor OMG that helped me sooo much!! For a while i was thinking that the stranger was kind of like the little boy but an older version. This really helped explain it though. Thank you!

    bro what does the ending mean i don’t get itt

    • @hunternmoore7070
      @hunternmoore7070  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The ending as written in the short story is intentionally left open-ended, and so many different interpretations are valid. So we shot these last few shots, we focused more so on a tone of regret, judgement, and horror to punctuate the ending of the film. My personal take is that the facade of this idyllic house begins to break down with the introduction of the Stranger, and his last act ultimately leaves the facade un-maintainable. Beyond that, I didn't focus on a literal conclusion, it felt apt to leave room to speculate.
