Semah in Alevis: “Moving to be with God”

- In this video, we talk about a religious community, Alevis living in Istanbul, Turkey.
For that, we are going to a neighborhood called Okmeydanı in Istanbul.
Alevism is a belief system that has mainly flourished in Anatolia.
Alevism follows the teachings of Caliph Ali, who is the cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam.
The religious service of the Alevis is called ‘cem’.
The public houses where cems are performed is called the house of cem, ‘cemevi.’
During the Cem rituals, some body movements are performed by Alevis; and this is named as ‘semah.’
UNESCO defines semah as ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’.
According to UNESCO, semahs can be described as a set of mystical and aesthetic body movements in rhythmic harmony.
They constitute one of the twelve main services found in Cem rituals, religious practices performed by adherents of Alevi belief system.
With my friend Caner, we attended and filmed one of the Cems in Okmeydanı Cemevi.
Alevis of Okmeydanı were so friendly and so helpful to tell us about their religion.
I should definitely emphasize that Alevism is a huge culture that I find very interesting and intriguing. This video is only a snapshot of one Cem session.
This video is just a beginning to show how dance is used for spiritual and religious practices.

Actually there is very important mistake you did in video. Ali wasn’t prophet. Muhammad is the last prophet for all Muslims including Alevis.Ali was caliph
Bir de Aleviliğe din demişler. Hatalar silsilesi. İyi niyetli bir şey. Fakat böyle ciddi hatalar görünce hiç yapılmasaydı diyoruz.
Ali isn't a prophet he was 4th caliph and the 1st imam of shia muslim,and Alevism is a sect within shia islam and their faith combining Islam(especially esoteric islam,sufism,shia islam) and turkish pre islamic culture

let me make a correction here. emphasizing kurdish community is non related with alevis. alevi belief is a turkmen belief. alevi-kurdish communities formed way later in the history. there is not even one alevi poet that wrote in kurdish or arabic. it's either in turkish or persian.

My family Turkmen Alevi we are speaks Turkish and Zazaki(old Sasanid persian language) Many Alevis speak Iranian languages other than Turkish, but they all have the same culture. I agree with you, Anatolian Alevism is a mixture of Turkish and Persian culture. It has nothing to do with Kurdish culture. We are not have 100% Turkish genetically, predominantly Iranian and Central Asian mix types.

Ali is not a prophet he was the 4th rashidun calph and the 1st imam of the Shias this is a big mistake to make in a video as it might mislead a lot of people

Semah zaten eski metinlerde "Raks" diye geçer, yani Dans. Dans demek saygısızlık değildir, Semah dinî bir Danstır, Sema gibi.
